@Voltan Oh weird, I didn’t know they made another Dirk Gently series. I know Stephen Mangan did one over here. It’s based on Douglas Adams books!

@nessisonett Ah, that is where why the name rang a very quiet bell far off in the distance!

Kiddy Grade (Funimation) - Early 00's sci-fi anime that follows the exploits of Eclair & Lumiere, a pair of secret agents for the G.O.T.T. (Galactic Organization of Trade & Tariffs) who are sent out to settle disputes between planets, stifle violent uprisings, tackle organized crime syndicates, and all that good stuff. Eclair has superhuman strength & a multipurpose weapon disguised as lipstick (can be used as a whip/rope or an explosive agent), while Lumiere has the ability to naturally interface/hack into computer systems & carries weaponized wine bottles (hey, it's anime).

It's okay, but nothing spectacular. The first half of the series is probably it's high point, as while it's more episodic in nature (with only the occasional hint at something deeper) it's fun enough, however when it's revealed that the government organization they work for isn't as noble as first believed (surprise, surprise) & the pair finds themselves on the outs, the show can't seem to pick a lane & introduces some huge dynamic shifting twist every other episode that refocuses who the big bad is (and other smaller twists just for the heck of it, such as a surprise parentage twist in the second to last episode that has absolutely no bearing on the narrative) & involves clones, shape shifters, & new bodies for old characters just to make things seem deeper than they really are. It ultimately comes down to a huge space battle with a massive Macross style starship/giant robot hybrid where a bunch of characters pull off a bunch of fancy contrived abilities that aren't really explained, but it's a fun watch. Probably my favorite part of the show were the "commercial bumpers" that anime tend to have in the middle of the episode, in this case artwork of the characters in various different anime stylings that changed every episode.

No idea how Funimation labeled it as merely TV-PG though. It has (very light) fanservice throughout (including one random instance of nudity about halfway through) & it can get very bloody at times.

No time for another Returnal run so I figured I'd check out Jupiter's Legacy. Starts pretty good.

I just realized it's been 10 years since the Smallville finale

I feel old as hell. Tom Welling was basically my generation's Superman even if he didn't put on the costume for virtually the entire show

The Underground Railroad on Prime Video. Pretty amazing show as I was locked into it all weekend. Easily the best show on any streaming service atm

@JohnnyShoulder @Voltan @nessisonett I only just saw the posts about Dirk Gently. The tv series has almost nothing to do with the books other than the titular character and the general premise of his “detective skills”.

I enjoyed the first series but never watched the second. The books are gloriously bonkers too (as you’d expect from Douglas Adams).

@Thrillho I watched both seasons now and thought the 2nd one wasn't as good as the 1st (but still fine)

Star Wars: the Cone Wars season 2 (Disney+).

Pretty solid, about the same quality wise as season 1, though I noticed there was less erratic continuity jumping around (there was still some, but it seemed more willing to commit to full 3-4 episode long arcs). Oh, and after being a pretty common side character in season 1, it looks like they've already jettisoned Jar Jar, lol (he may have had one appearance, but I may be thinking of a season 1 episode).

Started rewatching Angel since it hit Disney+. Forgot how perfect ‘late night TV’ it was!

@nessisonett just watched Joss’ latest show The Nevers... interesting (particularly the last ep, in a Dollhouse kinda way). Not Buffy, Angel or Firefly though... nowhere near.

@colonelkilgore I watched the pilot. It’s a flaming pile of sh*t. And clearly manufactured to distract from the fact he’s an abuser. Everything about it just felt incredibly forced. And this is coming from the guy who made Buffy so he clearly knows how to write about kick-ass women. I mean, the Victorian London setting has been done so, so many times now but The Nevers is right up there with the worst pilots I’ve ever seen.

@nessisonett yeah the pilot and the next couple of eps even, we’re awful... it did improve a bit for the last 3 but not enough to suggest people watch it.

@nessisonett @colonelkilgore Thanks for the precaution about The Nevers. I thought it looked decent in the promos. Looks like I need to steer clear of it.

@Arugula I need to try the Castlevania series then. I never got on with the games, but everyone keeps praising the show; good to see you don’t have to be a fan of the series to like the show

@Arugula @Th3solution I’m almost at the end of season 3 of Castlevania and although I’ve never even played a Castlevania game I’ve enjoyed it a lot. My missus has caught snippets here and there and although she normally has no interest in anime at all, she is actually quite interested, so we’re gonna start it over so she can get the full experience.

@Th3solution I just watched all 6 episodes of The Nevers. Have to admit I didn’t realize it was Whedon until like episode 4 (wasn’t paying attention to the credits).
I thought it was good. The 1st episode wasn’t the best of the bunch for sure but the story picks up later and has a pretty predictable twist followed by a pretty unexpected twist - only to end on a massive cliffhanger of course 😉

psmr

@Voltan I didn’t hate it as much as @nessisonett... I mean I watched the whole thing through and episode 6 was actually quite good but overall it just didn’t click with me the way Whedon-stuff used to.

@Arugula @colonelkilgore @Th3solution Similar history as you with the games (only played a few hours of one in 360 and hated it), but really dig the series. Sometimes I haven't a clue what is going on (season 3 I did struggle to keep up) but I still finding it enjoyable nonetheless. The latest 4th season is the last apparently, so will be interesting to see how it all pans out.

Somehow I missed the fact that Netflix is airing a Resident Evil show this summer. Looks like it’s starting Claire and Leon and it’s produced in the same CG style as RE2 Remake. From the promo, it appears the show will essentially look like the CG cutscenes from the game. Seems very compelling to me, as a fan of the game.

It actually looks like Netflix has a few decent projects going finally. Most of their output hasn’t interested me the last couple years.
