@nessisonett I hope I was able to introduce you to a new genre that you enjoy then. I can recommend more if you liked that album. Reverting to the subject of East Coast Hip Hop ,have you heard Raekwon's sequel to the purple tape? I'd love to know your thoughts on the album .

@AgentCooper I love Surprise Chef as well, I had the chance to see them live but I passed as I prefer more shreddy stuff live, i.e John Scofield & Julian Lage, as I play guitar and that's the sort of stuff I like to play, I also like free jazz music like Evan Parker live and to listen to as well.

@TheBrandedSwordsman Yeah, I couldn’t believe Part 2 was as good as it was considering what it had to live up to. It’s probably not as good as the original but it’s impressive he managed to put out something that could stand alongside his 90s work.

@nessisonett Yeah i agree, the original is hard to compete with, though. And I've heard that the Cuban Linx albums top anything else in his solo discography. Apparently there's a third on the way, like the Godfather trilogy or something.

@TheBrandedSwordsman Well let’s hope this album isn’t like the Godfather Part 3!

@nessisonett Haha indeed. What do you think of this guy, Sonny Sharrock?, a free jazz guitarist who worked with Pharoah Sanders numerous times before he died. This is probably his best work imo, recorded six months before he died.

Edit: @Voltan tagging you too now, to see what you think of this guy? Hope you are well, haven't spoken in a while.

Edit 2: @Jimmer-jammer what do you think of the music below? Assume you're probably familiar with the show too as it seems like your sort of thing, but I'd like your take on the music as well. I've posted a link to my personal interpretation of the guy's music below that, an homage, if you will. Love to know what you think of that as well. When you've got time that is

@TheBrandedSwordsman Man, that’s the Space Ghost Coast to Coast soundtrack, that’s one of my favourite shows. Utterly bizarre talk show sort of surreal thing, bit of a precursor to the Eric Andre Show.

@nessisonett Yeah I'm familiar with the show. Used to love it when it first aired. Now I am just rediscovering the theme tune and other accompanying songs through my further research into Sonny Sharrock.

The TikTok effect is insane. Duster have 4.1 million monthly listeners on Spotify, that’s three times as many as My Bloody Valentine. They’re like an incredibly niche slowcore band from the late 90s early 00s. Same as Life Without Buildings, my uncle’s literally in the music video cause it’s a live performance, they released one album but now are huge because of a 15 second clip of one song going big on TikTok. It makes me feel ancient lol.

Went and saw New Order last night at the Hydro in Glasgow last night, great gig and a few Joy Division songs in the set, great stuff and seeing Stephen Morris drumming live was incredible, man is a machine 👍

@TheBrandedSwordsman If I had to give a description of the music, I’d say it’s certainly very expressive. Like, raw human emotion translated directly through an instrument, which is probably an adequate description of music in general but somehow seems particularly apt here. As for you homage, I think you nailed it, man!

@Jimmer-jammer Here's a bit of different music for you. Hip hop this time. This guy's music might appeal to you as it generally invokes positivism and isn't so much of the typical gangsta s*it. But, yeah this is probably an unusual choice for a first recommendation as it features the Wu Tang clan who are generally more hardcore hip hop than Logic, but he, like myself, is obviously a big fan of theirs to have them featured on his track and I think the song in general works quite well. Logic's verse is first and if you are interested in hearing one of his albums in it's entirety I have posted a link to his most recent work below that.

Kind regards!

@TheBrandedSwordsman Thanks! I’m familiar with Logic and Wu Tang. All very talented. I’ll throw a recommendation in this vein your way for once. Actually not sure what this guy is up to anymore but I always thought he was incredibly talented. No slouch on the trumpet either.

@Jimmer-jammer I enjoyed the Mitchmatic song, so, thanks for that - I would like to hear his trumpet playing specifically on another track - if you can recommend? I didn't notice any trumpet playing in that one but maybe I just missed it. Anyway, glad you are already familiar with those two. I really liked their collaborative track.

Edit: I think Mitchmatic had a good flow to the delivery of his lyrics, also, wondering like you what has happened to him and hopefully he wasn't involved in any Tupac Shakur-type situations, considering the information about that rapper that has surfaced recently.

Jimmer-jammer

@TheBrandedSwordsman So yeah, there’s no trumpet in the shared tune that I’m aware of, just from when I knew him, I can say that he was pretty great at it. I did a bit of looking and he’s now based in Quebec and goes by Mitch Davis. Here’s a song from his current form. Seems to have drifted from rap. He does all the instruments. Like I said, very talented guy.

@Jimmer-jammer Really liked the trumpet playing in that one. Like you said, really talented guy. Do you know if he has had much success outside of Canada? In what capacity did you know him?

@TheBrandedSwordsman I’m not sure on his success. Last I had heard he went down to the states on some adventure. I never knew Mitch all that well on a personal level but very much ran in the same circles. Alberta had a vibrant indie music scene in the early 00’s that we were both involved in and one of his good friends and collaborators was one of my best friends. That kind of thing.

Great conscious hip hop album, for those of you who prefer that sort of thing.

Very underrated hip hop album. The production is redolent of 1970s African American movies.
