@Ravix Does anyone have the Blu-ray disc? - Only the double set they released with A Dame to Kill For. By now it must be around ten years old. The distributor is still around, last I saw they were purchased by Lionsgate UK. They also trade under planetofentertainment. If you are looking for any new listing for Sin City it would show up there, 4K included. They usually supply stores direct but you can also buy through that site civilian style. It might never show up on 4K if it was shot on 2K resolution. They'd have to redo every VFX at 4K. I don't think they could upscale it as 'true 4K either', it would be false advertisement. I remember the Blu-ray looking good at the time and though I don't collect 4K I've watched enough of it to make a good distinction between the two. Judging by those standards you might be better off buying it on Blu-ray, the cost of bringing it to 4K would be vast. The whole thing is basically one big VFX. I can't comment on the screen, other than it's big.

I don't know if these are good prices but they move a lot of stock.

(Ready for a tangent? No? Tough. I manage to turn it into a movie discussion at some point though, deceptively skillful as I am)

@GirlVersusGame This has to be your single most AI-like response yet 😁 and I hope the s***eating grin is enough to turn what may seem like quite a blunt appearing response, into something softer. It is meant in good faith and to be honest it is quite fascinating to me. I mean, you already speak better English than me, so there's that aspect, and I wonder as a multilingual type whether you formulate a thought in native and then have to process it through a live translation, or if your internal monologue switches beforehand. (Tangenty already) The font of knowledge you have is awesome, though, and that is certainly part of it. I know this is your speciality, as it were, too. But the way you draw from stored information is quite spectacular across many topics, the brain is a fantastic thing, and I suppose I wish mine was better at that kind of thing.

For example, i'm probably going to need a couple of days to digest your response in the other thread so don't feel i'm ignoring you on that. I have read through it once. But being honest, my own brain might forget to respond by the time i've actaully managed to absorb all of it 🙈 so I might partly respond here... but the main thing is, I was probably overreaching misplaced empathy. I don't know. Sometimes my ears go up regarding traumas, mental health and topics of that ilk, and I was just concerned recent discussions had maybe triggered something in you, a fight or flight response or something, or just overanalysis late at night in an overworked mind. I don't know. It is well above my pay grade tbh and none of my business really, so I apologise if it is in any way intrusive. But the response was fascinating. I do also advocate for ignoring news and social media and forming a reality based on your own actual opinions as best as humanly possible. For a short period I would binge god awful news stories and it was basically a form of intense torture as a broken empath/'modern society disliker'. It was the precursor to doom scrolling, I guess. Something that is also well worth avoiding. (Like me, haha)

And to snatch this back on topic to movies and this thread, it is partly why I feel it would be a struggle to watch Nightcrawler again. It is a great film that I know I like, but filled with utterly appalling people, that in some ways I think part of me kind of understood at the time, despite viscerally hating their actions. I do hate how easily I can (or used to, anyway) be able to understand awful or brutal sides of arguments or ideas. I am always still willing to hear both sides, but I tend to favour quite strongly the option that very much isn't harmful to others, even if in the past I did understand that some forms of exploitation and manipulation are effective. In advertising and in business, for example. But not now, f*** the last remnants of that, and even though it was more theoretical, I don't even like that there was an understanding of its usefulness. This is maybe something you kind of aluded to in the other post, too. But damn, I don't know. (Let's tangent this sh** up some more) I once wrote an absolutely awful horror story (I guess you could call it that, but to me it was almost the tale of an anti-hero), but the absolutely atrocious actions of the "protagonist" were explained by being the product of an environment, a broken society that needed to be taught a lesson, so it was always framed to go against those ideas of manipulation, of exploitation, but the actions to get those results were truly horrible, tbh. I eventually changed it into something else, but shock culture did always appeal to a previous version of myself, though it required some real detachment from my empathetic soul. Maybe it contained a question well worth asking, but it did go too far in making that point. And then you have to question whether that itself is being exploititive. At this point I really am babbling, but I will pull out a few more movies I don't think I could watch again "on frozen ground" f*** me, just no. I can't deal with that sh**. "8mm" it is Nic Cage, but I feel like that was pretty f***ing dark too. I don't remember that much of it, but both were probably a bit too exploitative of the subject matter to ever be considered actual entertainment.

Oh yeah, and something about Sin City 🙃 I'll probably grab a copy on Blu Ray, there does seem to be multiple distributors/releases in the UK, and even more in the US. But if they are all of the same visual quality just with proceeds filtering to different corperations I doubt it matters. I suppose the rights to it became a bit of a s*** show, too, if it was originally a Miramax. But again, well above my pay grade, other than knowing it was founded by a certain individual.

@Vermines tedious and smug, you say. Throw in a pretentious and i'm booking tickets right away 😅

A shame, to be honest. I think you summed it up quite well. The first is a fun throwaway twist on a tried and trusted formula. The second is kind of like a superhero movie? Am I remembering it correctly? Just doing mad, impossible stuff because they decided that within this world anything can be a magic trick if cgi can do it.

Honestly, I'll probably still watch the new one on streaming for a laugh (if alcohol is present), but you may have saved me from purchasing the steelbook or physical 4k out of my instinct of "well, I kind of liked the first one for entertainment value, so it might be worth it"

As for Pillion, it does sound interesting even if it isn't my cup of tea, and I may never see it myself (what a prudish use of the phrase I find myself using, and i'm really no prude) If you do want more Skarsgard, btw, he is oft shirtless in The Northman 😛 not that i'd ever condone objectifying human flesh that attracts you, no no no. But do I dare make the joke that Pillion may be one of those movies that reviews as "there wasn't a dry seat in the house" no, I do not dare. I don't want to oversimplify it for the sake of this joke because it does sound genuinely touching and focused on the human relationship and trust aspects. But I did say it, damn! I do imagine there will be a certain subset of folk that will still be going to see it for nefarious reasons 🙈 I mean, remember how big 50 shades of grey was, and that was absolute grade-a Schlock, right? In fact, did you notice any prosecco welding types at the screening, faces a little flush, that may have been there for that one very reason 🤭

Oof, ignore any parts of this you desire as I don't want to actually mock the movie itself, but my "life is just a joke" perk seems to have activated and I can't help mocking the thirst associated with those who may be drunk on prosecco fumes and not there for the actual story within 😅

Back on track... Melling was in The Pale Blue Eye? Correct? It may not be the most memorable movie, overall, but it is well worth a watch, i'd say, for the atmosphere and casting.

@GirlVersusGame The story is fully wrapped up now with the release of the sequel! Not sure how much you know about the theory of stage musicals, but the general rule is that they're divided up into an Act 1 and an Act 2 with an intermission inbetween. What the films did is essentially adapt the first act of the musical as the first film and the second as the sequel. You might think that could create for an awkward ending for the first film since it's not supposed to be the ending of the musical, but luckily they have an incredibly epic musical number right before the intermission that was ripe to adapt as the ending for the first film! Not all musicals would be well served by doing them this way, but Wicked is one where it actually worked. And hey, the studios won't pass up that extra green if they don't have to!

@Vermines Ohhh, thank you for sharing your thoughts on Pillion! This movie was not on my radar in the slightest, but I've had to instantly mark it for future viewing. Sounds like the type of story I might be into... which is hard to not make sound suggestive after Ravix came and rampaged through here with their accusations (facts)!

@Ravix No, but really, I won't insert myself into any of these conversations as I don't have much of value to add... but I do just want to say thanks for the laughs up there. Highly enjoyed your messy tangents on both occasions! Keep it coming and I think I'll have to bestow you the title of our forum comedian. 😜

Oh, complete garbage, yes @Vermines I just suspect some of that same crowd (the ones who made such a godawful movie so popular, for... reasons) may see Skarsgard in the trailer or something, and then go for that similar viewing "experience". But apologies if I've put anyone off sitting on cinema seating for the foreseeable 🫠 It isn't my fault, it is the varocious and bored housewives, the pink princess themed hen party types, and the Union of the Ladies who Absorb Prosecco (U-LAP? I don't know, it's late 😅)

@Tjuz well... as it is the movie thread... maybe you're not far off
Untitled

(The life is a joke aspect, anyway. Maybe not some of his other character traits 😬)

The movie sounds good, I just had visions of it also generating a new wave of bland Prosecco girls who remember they "like BDSM", even though it is profoundly queer auteur cinema this time around (I'm guess it fits the bill to be described thusly), and they will simply be blinded by the Skarsgard daddy thirst 👀

Enough of that anyway, you may proceed to having a more normal discussion with more normal folk than I.

Oh, and so you know, I'm not dismissing the film in any way, some will because of a closed mind, I agree. I just haven't watched anything remotely within the genre or subgenre for quite a while, as even a well executed romance is still confined in its own ideals of love, and I am way to strange for that. Oh how mysterious of me. In fact, I do quite like when something that isn't strictly a romance story actually secretly is, to be fair. Ehhh, I may even end up seeing this one day, I just have no plans to at the moment haha.

@Ravix I can clear that Sin City response up pretty easily. I'm not that invested in 4K but Robert Rodrigeuz is one of my all time favorite film directors (hence so many copies of From Dusk till Dawn on those shelves) Have you ever watched El Mariachi? It's basically Desperado but done on a budget of only $7K USD. What he was able to achieve has always impressed me, and impressed me even more when I read his his book Rebel Without a Crew. He's one of those very rare directors that underwent the Hollywood treatment but that I still admire. That's also why that rental promo is sitting on the shelf for Sin City, it was a massively hyped movie but he still retained that style and quality that makes him so good. I knew the format it was shot on, the same way I knew El mariachi was shot on 16mm then blown up to 35mm for theatrical and home release. Once you get into VFX you are always going to run into trouble when blowing up any kind of print, I'm not being rude but it's kind of simple logic really.

I really liked 8mm but feel like I shouldn't I think it's because it tackled a subject that no one else had and presented a rather realistic outcome. It went back to the kind of supply and demand mentality that I did have experience with. 8mm is the perfect example of their being no demand without a supply. It was a very important movie and Joel Schumacher (though absolutely crazy at times) did the research. There's an Israeli author called Yaron Svoray who wrote a book called Gods of Death. It's the most accurate book on what's actually online, where it comes from and why. Joel took his work and implemented it into his movie. The book itself received some awful reviews because people didn't want to believe that something so dark as you said can exist. That's part of the reason why some critics wouldn't give it a fair review, they couldn't mentally put themselves in that place where it could be real.I really liked Nightcrawler too, liking movies like that sometimes does make me worry a little. I'm obviously very desensitized to onscreen violence, but like 8mm I look at the bigger picture. The who, the what, the why, details I know you wouldn't like to know.

And I wonder as a multilingual type whether you formulate a thought in native and then have to process it through a live translation, or if your internal monologue switches beforehand

  • I don't let A.I. speak for me and never would, I use that system I mentioned to move the actual message or post from one system to the next, then remove or hide where it went. I can only do so much of that myself. When it comes to typing I just think what I'd like to say then do it. However I do run it through my mind multiple times so I know it flows properly. When I'm reading a response I usually only read it once, unless it's something very important then I'll read it maybe three times until I'm sure I can give an adequate response that (hopefully) adds to or fits the initial query or statement.

I speak a couple of languages but English was one that was needed more than any other, I still study and work to improve it but run into hurdles when I see repetitive words like 'because' and my Ex said I use the words 'I and me' far too much, so I don't know. It's a hard language and if I use it too much I start to over-analyze so many words. There are many double meanings. Your sword has a point, a sharp one. You could have a point in a conversation, or the difference between read. As in 'I read a book' or 'I will read a book'. It complicates itself further when it becomes a homophone so 'I red a book' 'the book had a red cover', it sounds the exact same but it has a different meaning and if you aren't listening you miss it.

It's nice that you think it comes off properly. I think knowing so much about various subjects is highly selective. If you take something like sports, I can have a conversation about ice skating or fencing but you could mention basketball (I saw you say basketball before) and Michael Jordan would be the limit of my knowledge, and only his role in Space Jam. I imagine it might be like that for most people though. If I want to learn about a specific moment in history I'll read fifty books on the topic until I'm satisfied that I've seen all of the angles and can then form my own opinion about what I read.

I think it comes from the culture of being told only what you need to know. Reading is like a little fire that casts off embers and sparks, each one leads to another topic or branch of interest. That's also how I view the world. If you are surrounded by politics you want to know why a certain country or state got to where it is, or what were the contributing factors that lead to destabilization. The same can be said for finance and industry. Your family could have let's say twenty seven members and you could gather around the dinner table and discuss all kinds of things that relate to your life. Imagine it were one hundred people, maybe even more. That's a lot of people talking, a lot of information can be gained just by listening. I get to meet a lot of people, they all talk. I soak it all up.

It's a kind of unending need to learn, especially the little nuances and trivial things that people take for granted. Cutting someone off from different cultures, concepts of ideas only dumbs them down if they accept a kind of personal stagnation. Privilege does too, you'd never learn to make your bed if someone made it for you. You'd never learn to cook if someone prepared all of your meals. It might sound great for a while but eventually you'd want some independence right? Maybe you'd play a cooking simulator game.

There are always opportunities to learn and I take them at every chance given. The real difference is when you filter what becomes acceptable knowledge. I go back and fourth with the term brainwashing because in a way constant reinforcement fits some of those requirements. That's partly why I initially shared. What should bother me about my own situation doesn't. I believe society as a whole has a right to steer it's own development, educationally, or other. I don't fully believe that about myself and I can't pretend that I do. There's a mental roadblock there, instead I carefully navigate between subjects and topics. If something is taboo or forbidden to your culture you (usually) accept that and move onto something else. Or rather that's what I do. There's a kind of divergence between what was once frowned upon, what was once taboo and what is now illegal. If it became illegal overnight then I want to know why.

I think the part you don't realize is that as far as some things are concerned there is no achievable alternative. Hypothetically speaking if three men walked into your home right now and tried to remove you from there you could put up a fight, maybe start swinging your pointy sword around. I wouldn't, I'd know why they were there. What you call trauma I call a lesson, but only in my case. All kinds of cultures, societies, groups and families govern themselves differently. I watched Predator Badlands last night and yes it was a movie but they had their own customs, traditions, methodology, it kept them strong, united and capable of looking after their own.

History is not that dissimilar, there are different degrees of modernity. A person can focus their efforts on industrialization or bureaucracy but decide to lessen the reigns on individualism. They can be a traditionalist and an industrialist all in one, especially if that tradition suits their household. Is it living in the past? possibly, it's easier for you to separate the two because of a vastly different upbringing. I use technology and do all of those normal things like watch movies, listen to music but we're probably decades behind on some of the smaller things. I'm sure it's cropped up in some comments, when it did I quickly deleted it. I'm not a traditionalist by choice, I do believe people should be given the choice to be themselves, to love who they want to, to not be afraid because their skin is a different colour. So much of the rest is very grey and that's because I never had to question it. The same goes for relationships, preferences and so on. Possibly to the extreme, what can be a dynamic to some can be a kind of unequal footing to others. If the puzzle pieces fit would you rearrange some of those pieces when someone else told you that the image was inaccurate? rearranging it might bring the imagine more into alignment with what they think is correct, but you'll always be left with that little bit of doubt.

I do care about trauma, mental health, and empathy, that care extends outwards not inwards. There's a lot of good in the world, and no things don't exactly make up for people but it really is possible to establish a middle ground between the two. I'm doing it right now just by talking to you, I'm using a thing to make a connection. I try to sugarcoat the facts because knowing the actual details would serve no real purpose, it wouldn't change the situation. It's fine if you can't respond, I don't see it as being ignored. I understand your concerns, I just don't know how to redirect those concerns and feel them for myself. I don't even know if it's possible to do so when you've already conformed to the kind of standard that defines normal. Which could be lost in translation, but most likely is not.

The first release is The Untouchables and has 3 levels of collector's tat.

This is an image of the fullest tat version. Way too much tat for me, but the steelbook may end up in my collection. It does look like a good set with plenty of interesting tat, for those with a deeper love for the movie and with more free space, though. I'd say they've done a decent job with this

Sweet, I'll look forward to Destroy All Monsters and Godzilla vs. Hedorah then! I've certainly heard great things about the latter, so should get back to the series soon. Out of the eight I've watched so far, the 1954 original remains my favourite. It shocked me how much I immediately fell in love with it, being no stranger to its concept (as I've approached the whole franchise backwards) and usually struggling with real old movies, but it immediately stomped its way into my all-time top five.

@Tjuz I did do some research on that about a year or so ago and the conclusion was that it was very expensive, but worse, the cheapest option was to have Zavvi ship to a US address and then have them forward it to Norway.
