@FuriousMachine I could do with a UK release of Pan's Labyrinth, mumble grumble.
Lionsgate Limited did some 25th anniversary stuff today, but I believe they don't offer included tax, import and all that jazz, so I've never ordered from them. Hoping an American Psycho steelbook of some kind gets stocked in the UK some time. The other was Dogma, I believe.
Surely the UK should get something American Psycho based this year, France had it's own new steelbook for crying out loud, and they're french!
(I do remember there was supposed to be something non steel based for AmPsy, actually. A special edition somewhere or other. I feel like I mentioned it here, but can't seem to see anything listed on Bluray.com)
finished watching the rest of In Search of Darkness 1 on Tubi today. im curious if Tubi will later on add In Search of Darkness I and III soon like next month or so.
@Ravix Yeah, I'm personally hoping "Dogma" will get a Euro release, but as nothing's been announced yet (at least not to my knowledge), I don't see it happening soon. Same with "The Descent", still no word of a local release for that one.
Speaking of anniversaries, the recently mentioned "The Frighteners" is having its 30th next year. Fingers crossed for a proper release. If I haven't already sold my mother for "Equilibrium", I will definitely put her up on eBay for "The Frighteners", should that glorious day come.
@FuriousMachine oh yeah, another Lionsgate 25th was Battle Royale, which we had referenced recently.
I noticed today that the UK has had a few select showings of Dogma, via... thinking... Vertigo Films (that's the one) so it, in a way, does exist in europe. No idea if that means it will also pop up on 4k physical here. Lionsgate are a funny one, some stuff will appear after a few months in the UK/EU, some releases... not a sausage. So I don't know if it is licensing, stinginess or what tbh.
Pester your local cinemas, maybe they will have a limited run of Dogma coming up too? Although I assume they'd keep you in the loop anyway 🧐
I know not of 'The Frightners', but one mother sounds like the going rate these days.
Oh yeah, and to reduce what minimal movie prestige I may have attained to absolute zero, I am going to watch 'The Rats' tonight. Come on, Dolph Lundren Witcher, let's go 🙈
@Ravix It's Vertigo, I don't know about showings outside of the UK but I'm attending a screening. It's one of my favorite Kevin Smith movies. I've been to so many of his actual shows too where it's just him and Jason Mewes on stage. Many of them get recorded, it's worth tracking them down if you've never seen them before. I think his last one was Too Fat to Fly. I walked right past him at a screen not too long ago, I didn't recognize him at all. He put so much weight off, it's impressive and a little scary.
These violent delights have violent ends & in their triumph die, like fire & powder Which, as they kiss, consume.
@Ravix Yeah, Lionsgate works in mysterious ways. Probably comes down to distribution partnerships or some such thing.
Some of the US releases forego region locking the Blu-Rays, I assume to avoid having to manufacture different versions, but I can't remember if Lionsgate does this with any regularity or not.
Let me know how great Witcher Dolph is (please use the only accepted "Dolph brilliance scale", which ranges from "Brilliant" to "F**king Brilliant", when providing feedback)
@FuriousMachine ended up having Taxi Driver on instead. A film which, i'm sure you will agree, scores a measly 0/10 on the Lundgren scale. For shame. I'm not sure what Scorsese was even thinking with that, to be honest!
I do hope American Psycho makes it to these shores in steel form again. But I'm still waiting for a Jackie Brown restock, so UK is not a priority for those gatekeeping lions, even when they do send over a few.
@Ravix I don't think Marty's made a single movie featuring the Dolph... and he calls himself a filmmaker...
Crossing fingers for the "Jackie Brown" steel for you (and the "American Psycho" release, for that matter). I managed to get my dirty hands on the former and I'm unsure if I'm interested in the latter. Been too long since I saw it and can't remember if I liked it or not... I think I did
Had a long evening at the cinema last night, with two big releases back to back on the big screen. I was worried my expectations were on the high side for both, but they were more or less met.
Predator: Badlands turned out to be quite different from what I expected, at least tonally. Both fun and, at times, funny, I really enjoyed this one. Having the Predator as the protagonist actually worked quite well and Dek turned out to be a character I would definitely want to see more of. I fully expect many to be disappointed and maybe even angry that this is a very different type of Predator movie that we've come to expect, but if you can let go of that, there may be a movie to like here. I sure did
I was reminded that I haven't loved an Edgar Wright movie since "Hot Fuzz" when I was watching The Running Man. By no means a bad movie; I was never bored, but it didn't blow me away, either. It felt like it frequently forgot that it wanted to be a satire, which is kind of fine, as it worked best when it simply tried to fulfil the "action/suspense" promise and didn't try to be clever. As a satire it didn't work that well, in my opinion. This results in a movie that is tonally of all over the place and it struggles to find its identity. Glen Powell continues to prove he is leading man material, but also he suffers from the tonal shifts the movie imposes on his performance. There's still a lot to like here, though, but maybe keep expectations a little bit in check. Also worth mentioning that this is a new adaptation of the novel and not a remake of the Arnold movie, so don't go expecting another version of the 80's classic (bonus points for the clever way they paid homage to the old Austrian Oak, though)
@FuriousMachine Yes, but now they go by the name of "GRUV" ?!!? SHOUT recently transitioned into the "Streaming" business and GRUV handles all the DVD/BLU RAY Sales on their own website.
@Mikeg1965 "GRUV"? Good grief, that's... different. Still, what's in a name, right? Hopefully they'll continue to produce interesting releases. A bit of a thorn in my side that they only release for the NA market. Also difficult to import without turning to eBay opportunists. Did that box also contain Blu-Ray discs with extras or is it a strictly 4K affair? Might be worth tracking down if it's the latter, otherwise I think I'll continue waiting for a decent EU release.
@Metonymy Nope, no love, but I do like it as a friend I should probably rewatch that one, as I may grow to love it. I remember liking it more than his other non-Cornetto output by a decent margin, but every time I consider putting it on, oof, Kevin Spacey... Don't know if I can ignore my severe distaste for the man enough to not have it colour my experience of the movie, but I may give it a try in order to find out. Similar attempts to watch good old Mel Gibson movies have failed, though.
@FuriousMachine - Wow didn’t know they did not “International Ship”. The set is great though and worth picking up imo. There is the Standard Blu Ray and 4K UHD for each film. Also, there is a 3 Hour “Workprint” Version of the Part 3 film! Supposedly, the film company felt that the audience wouldn’t sit thru 3 hours worth of Bullet Casings’ and had John Woo & Tsui Hark chop off a large piece to keep it under 2 hours. There are also a lot of “how they made, commentaries and deleted scenes as well.
I remember watching A Better Tomorrow many times, a real classic. Certain scenes are infamous, and you can still see the influence it had on western movies, even now.
I had my copy on videotape, though. I am a big fan of Woo’s Heroic Bloodshed films, although Hard Boiled is now the only one I still own.
Distinctly remember the last hour or so of Better Tomorrow II being completely insane.
@Metonymy 😆 Problem is, I really loved that one, but haven't been able to watch it in recent years. I recently broke down and bought the Arrow 4K release, fully intending to grit my teeth and watch it again, hoping I can get over my loathing of Spacey and Singer enough to at least enjoy the movie again... haven't gotten around to it yet, though
@Mikeg1965 Just checked GRUV to see of their shipping policies had changed along with the name, but alas, no. I guess it probably has to do with licensing, them purchasing only NA distribution rights and would be in breach if they shipped outside. Oh well, I'll be patient, hopefully someone will realise there's a market in EU for a similar release. I haven't seen any of the classic Woo films in ages and I just realised that I'm not even 100% sure I ever saw the third one
Like @Matthewnh I owned many of the Woo films on VHS. Most of them were duped from a friend's copy, which in turn was a dupe, by chaining our VCRs together. Had many a "dupe weekend" back in the day. The quality was abominable as the tapes were old and worn as well, but it was what we got (I feel like I'm now part of the Monty Python bit about how hard it was "back in the old days")
@Metonymy@FuriousMachine I have no issue in separating the art from the artist as they say. The Naked Gun films are one of my favourite comedies, although those may prove less of mental hurdle for some since OJ passed away.
Seven is one I'm itching to get on 4K, but am waiting for the price to drop on the steelbook. 30 quid is my own mental hurdle that I can't get over.
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
