@LN78 I think it's more the continuity box they've trapped themselves in that'd spark such a move, if it were even to happen; my comment about woke diversity was more of an afterthought, if I'm honest. Barbara Broccoli has become professionally smitten with Daniel Craig, so much so that I can see her retiring or stepping back once he hangs up his holster. Given the rocky time EON has had securing a distribution deal of late, and many of the production woes surrounding No Time to Die (about which I'm only vaguely aware), it just feels like there'll have to be a long break and a big change before anybody tries to continue the franchise.
And, again as an afterthought, but every single time there's a Bond vacuum (either between actors or, even nowadays, between the individual movies) the echo chamber of "He should be black!" or "It should be a woman!" grows louder. Other iconic British characters have gone first now, so it would be less of a risk for Bond; I remember reading a piece years ago, saying "Bond can only stop being a white man when Doctor Who becomes a woman!" which I thought of with a chuckle when Jodie Whittaker got cast.
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
@LN78 Half marketing, half entitlement of whichever group wants representation. "We don't have an equivalent and it'd take too long to establish anything as iconic for ourselves."
Which is a huge shame, as I'd pay all the money in the world to see a Wai Linn spin-off.
"We want different things, Crosshair. That doesn't mean that we have to be enemies."
@LN78 No, I was actually kinda glad when those rumours went away. Jinx was great as part of a larger tale, and I think Halle Berry is a strong lead, but I don't think the character could sustain her own standalone film. We've seen plenty of things about NSA (or American government in general) agents before, so it'd either have ended up being a formulaic celebrity vehicle or, worse, a carbon copy of a Bond film. Both of which would've damaged the franchise.
I once wrote Jinx into a Bond fan fiction project, only to kill her off after a couple chapters, simply because she isn't three-dimensional enough to do anything with.
Wai Linn, meanwhile, comes from a very different and unique governmental culture. The film would never sell in China, which means it'd never get made nowadays, or it would have to be heavily censored and approved to the point of pointlessness, but exploring that duality and personal conflict via somebody as talented and as engaging as Michelle Yeoh could make for something truly special.
Blimey, I'd forgotten about the 60th anniversary. You're right, they'll launch a new Bond then, then. Some of the breaks between Craig's films have been chasms, but I think they've been more to do with him and legal background stuff than anything else. Something every two or three years is about right.
I think you're closer than my idea!

@WanderingBullet Yeah, nationality has played into a couple decisions, perhaps earlier on in the franchise, but they've always cast a wide net and kept an open mind.
Hugh Jackman would've been cool, although I'm always wary of people already known for iconic roles because then I reckon many would have difficulty separating them from Bond; in his case, depending on when he was up for it, I'd have just seen a well-dressed Wolverine. Perhaps why I'm slightly nervous about Henry Cavill being cast, because I'd just be waiting for him to rip open his tuxedo and reveal a big red S on his chest.

@Arugula@jacobia Saw The Perfection last night. Wow, what a bonkers movie! I'm glad I went into it not knowing anything, I even stopped the preview that comes up in Netflix.
Any you guys seen Wounds, also on Netflix? Not seen it yet but it got a good review and was described as a Lovecraftian body horror spine-tingler, which immediately had my interest!
Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.
Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.
I watched You Were Never Really Here on Netflix and to be honest, with Joaquin Phoenix it was a perfect companion piece to that film. Kind of a hitman film but focusing on the man rather than the hit and the ptsd from his life. Beautifully shot, devastating acting. Very well made film.
Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot
@WanderingBullet Sounds pretty good. I never saw the Ryan Reynolds attempt, but I gather I didn't miss much, so fingers crossed for a decent addition to the DC roster.

@RogerRoger It is all rather samey, but in a rather good way. I think they could do well with a change of format somehow. The lack of gadget reliance really helped sell Craig's Bond - if they could carry that on and perhaps - as has been discussed - do a period 50s/60s run as close to the style of the books, change the set up completely and run with some female agents not-named Bond - I don't know.
Given the way the trailer is cut though (and I'm not sure if this is actually already been confirmed), I'm sure now that Lashana Lynch is 007.

@KALofKRYPTON Yes, I think it's more or less a given, she's the new Double-Oh Seven. As previously commented, given the Craig era's commitment to continuity, I'm not quite sure how they're gonna effectively recast the Bond character and reset everything back to zero (unless, from now on, each actor's tenure is gonna become its own mini-series... in which case, roll on the 60s period piece).

@RogerRoger I saw the trailer the other day. It looks quite good actually. Hopefully it is, cause I only enjoyed Casino Royale among all the Daniel Craig Bond movies.
@KALofKRYPTON I always thought the gadgets were one of the reasons why the Bonds movies were so cool even though they can be quite silly at times. Craig's version of 007 is more badass compared to previous Bonds, though.
