Good God though my first attempt at trying it was utterly abysmal!

There goes my somewhat cocky attitude I had going in. I didn't even get to the village section!

The controls are rather crusty. Moreso then the older titles I'd personally say.

I have been playing RPG's mostly as of late and I can't quite honestly recall the last third person shooter I played (Uncharted last year?) so I expected to be a bit rusty with the playstyle but... Wow. I was truly terrible

... Chapter 1-1 done. Only took like... six tries til I'd finally got to grips with the playstyle and got through the village section with minimal damage and supply losses

Rest of the chapter was really easy too.

I’m still at Ch 2-1.
I haven’t had access to my console for a week and so I’m not sure how much I’ll get played before Halloween ends, but I’m itching to get back to it.

I don’t think I dropped an update to since i defeated the first boss, which I beat the first try but I was garbage at it. I was really proud how well I was doing with the villagers and rationing my ammo and health items, then I had to burn through a lot of herbs and eggs during that boss fight in the boat. I had no idea what I was doing at first and kept letting him knock me out. I should have just loaded a prior save and try again because it’s not that hard when you know what the technique is to defeat him, but I think I’ll just roll with it. I was running out of space in my inventory anyways.

Pretty sure I've used that exact same justification for needing to consume a bunch of health before! I may have even muttered it out loud, in an effort to make myself feel better about my poor skills!

@RogerRoger Justification is something that do very well. 😉 Glad I’m not the only one.

Nevertheless, as a stockpiler of virtual supplies, I tend to be over-prepared in my games. I like having a large amount of back-up health and ammo just in case I run into an impossible scenario. When I watch playthroughs on YouTube and see people living moment to moment using health and ammo liberally, I can’t help but admire their spontaneity. Unfortunately I have a disposition to be a miser with my stuff… until I run out of storage space. 😄

@Th3solution Same, 100% the same. Always spending upgrade points on larger health reserves or more effective armour, even if I'm doing okay with the gameplay. Always doing a post-combat lap to pick up every spare mag. Always hoarding medkits and resources. Always carrying far more than I end up needing, and then cursing the moment I have to make space for an essential trinket that I didn't anticipate. Always!

Did Chapter 1-2 and have saved just before the boss in Chapter 1-3.

... It took me even longer to get past 1-2 cus again, I wouldn't take no for an answer and kept trying to perfect my run of the starting area with all the villagers with minimal losses of supplies.

When I got to chapter 1-3 I immediately went back into the previous room and ended up getting another cutscene showing Ada protecting Leon from the Big Cheese that I don't remember ever seeing before which was cool.

Honestly not much has come back to me about the game from playing it 12 years ago baring the upcoming lake boss and the next one The Giant guy... Gigante?

I've been using the shotgun a LOT. The bolt action rifle is a bit awkward but great for damage and headshots and I bought the TMP too.

Did everyone get the Punisher Handgun from the merchant for getting the blue medallions? Unsure of which Handgun to tune up myself.

@HallowMoonshadow I’ve been using the Red9 but you can’t really go wrong with the Punisher!

@HallowMoonshadow Yes, I did get the Punisher, and the sub-machine gun too. I’ve been trying to rely on the handgun, but the shotgun is so much better for crowd control. I’m just worried about the ammo scarcity.

HallowMoonshadow

Ahh thanks for the replies I appreciate it @Star-Lord & @nessisonett!

I'll hold off upgrading my handguns for now... In fact I sold the starting one to make room in my teeny atache case!

I've got so much TMP ammo @Th3solution and two boxes of handgun ammo as well. Like you say the shotgun is SO useful for crowd control and just for general useage really. I found the TMP very useful against the upcoming big fight thanks to the small arena.

Dunno if you know but I found out last night that if your gun is out of ammo and you go tune up the capacity at the merchant, the gun's ammo is completely refilled! Very useful albeit you have to be under very situational circumstances to really make use of it 😄

Just got to the end of Chapter 2-1 last night and found Ashley. Always found her design a bit... Off to be honest.

The dogs outside the church scared the crap outta me and may've caused me to die from being completely unprepared...

I'm at the Castle finally... Been a bit slow going the past few days but I finally made some good progress!

I really did not remember the fight against the "Big Cheese" at all! I can only imagine how that'll look in the remake.

I was being INCRECIBLY stingy with my weapons and health here too, playing it more like the original three games rather then the action title it actually is.

Once I looked up there was no ranking system at the end I've been a LOT more liberal with saving, healing, ammo and the likes 😅

@HallowMoonshadow I’m slow to make progress too, but enjoying it nonetheless. I’m still in Ch 2, that stupid cabin assault is a real struggle and so I took a break.

I have discovered through replaying sections after death (or after a poor showing where I burn through too much inventory and want to try for a better outcome) that there are some pickups that are fixed and constant and some that are random. Some boxes are empty one time and then have ammo the next and then money the next. I also feel like the game has some kind of logic that mercifully gives you what you need when enemies drop items. Despite me being rubbish at the game, I’ve yet to actually run out of health or ammo. But again, I’ve been playing extensively conservatively also and trying my best to end my conflicts with optimal health and supplies.

I probably should just throw caution to the wind and roll with it. But now that I have to burn health supplies on Ashley whenever she gets injured, it has made me even more nervous to be too liberal with those. If she gets caught in a bear trap
it literally almost kills her immediately. Typically she ends up in the red at the very least. Pretty fragile.

Incidentally, I’m not sure if spoiler tagging this overkill but, is this the first game that ever used the companion escort feature as part of its core design? I know games before it must have had escort missions, but I think this may be the first to do this, way before The Last of Us, God of War, BioShock Infinite, etc. Can you think of a game that had this before RE4?

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

HallowMoonshadow

Yeah I'm in Chapter 3-1 so I'm only an act or two ahead of you @Th3solution! 😄

I seem to be doing worse in the open areas cus the cabin section was a complete breeze for me, I took no damage at all surprisingly.

Yeah I have well over 150 pistol ammo somehow so... I sold like 30 bullets off in 2-3 to make more room in my inventory for grenades and other bullets

I was going to say something earlier in regards to Ashley and given the general disdain of escort missions in gaming I'm surprised in how well RE4 is regarded despite Ashley and escorting her being a major part of the game!

@HallowMoonshadow The ability to have Ashley hide or stay put and then call her back by whistling at her is really nice (although slightly condescending maybe with the whistling part like she’s a dog 😅) and I would have liked that in some of the escort missions I’ve done before.

But to your point, I’m a little surprised at how revered this game is. Perhaps it hit harder when it was new because of fresh ideas like that, but so far it’s probably my least favorite of the first four RE games. That’s not to say it’s a bad game or I’m not liking it, but the first three were so spectacular to me, and so far this is just… good, not great. It’s early yet and I have a lot of the game left though.

“We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them.”

HallowMoonshadow

I'm at 3-3 at the moment and hopefully I'll make an actual decent push into beating this game today. I've already clocked 6 hours of game time going by the typewriter... And I know there's at least 5 chapters to the game.

I've also finally met a certain someone and well Leon meeting Ada is rather uncerimonious isn't it? Ada's a big part of Leon's experience at Racoon City and he doesn't really react much to seeing her again or confirming that she's actually alive. He's heard some rumours sure but... Kinda a let down there in my opinion...

@HallowMoonshadow I always found that scene a bit odd. Especially after playing the remake of 2, but perhaps it’ll be a bit more of an event in the 4 remake.

Well I'm at 4-4 now so I haven't got too long left to Resident Evil 4.

Good god I hate the quick time event implimemtation in this. Seriously. They're utterly obnoxious whenever they get shoehorned in.

... Ya might wanna start the next month of gameclub though @nessisonett as I'm unsure if @Th3solution is playing this still thanks to him starting up Dark Souls Remastered the other day and I'm sure it's been well over a month now 😅

@HallowMoonshadow I’ll need to have a look at what games to put to a vote! I genuinely can’t remember what else there was to choose from.

@HallowMoonshadow @nessisonett Yeah, Dark Souls sucked me in and I’m having trouble going back to RE4. I fully plan on going back, but I’m slightly obsessed with that blasted FromSoft game. They really get their claws into you and take over.

It’s ironic that I had to take a break from RE4 because of that really difficult cabin section and then I ended up gravitating to an even harder game. I’m hopeless… 😅

@Mr_B021 That sounds like a plan, my brain’s fried and I feel like it needs a reset button 😂
