I think it's pretty important to wait for Mario Kart 8, Smash Bros., and Zelda U before claiming the Wii U is dead. It has definitely struggled so far, but those 3 titles are HUGE staples of Nintendo. The lack of third-party support has cut them deeply, but they are still going to sell 20 million units before all is said and done.
I'm a Nintendo guy, but they are far from perfect. And the lack of sports games on the system is the reason I don't have one. My son wants one, so we'll get one this holiday season I'm sure. I love the first-party games, and I can't wait to play Tropical Freeze, 3D World, Mario Kart 8, etc.
The third-party argument is pretty complicated. Companies are scared to make their games for the Wii because sales are low, but the lack of third-party games is one of the main reasons sales are low. It's a double-edged sword, and it's hurt the system quite a bit.
I'm no expert on Nintendo but do you guys think maybe Nintendo have ignored third party for too long and now that they probably need it to sell the Wii u they're paying for it? The Wii u is more or less dead, that's why third parties aren't bothering. Why would any company spend a bunch of money on a Wii u version? It has more chance of ending up on vita.
Nintendo has not been ignoring third parties. It's the third parties seeing every Nintendo console as one for children. Now, they could have pushed them more, but the major third parties they would want would be Call of Duty, and those just haven't worked out as well for the CODBRO gamer crowd.

The problem is companys seeing Wii U as a console with a small install base that isn't showing signs of changes, and that small user base isn't even that fond of third party games. It has nothing to do with them seeing it as a console for children.
Wii U is about as "dead" as the Vita, but both consoles are still receiving support despite being mostly ignored by the major third parties. Oddly enough, the two consoles are getting a good amount of indie support as well.
I always look at Nintendo's consoles as a first/second of two consoles, with a Playstation as the other console. You can get most games with both consoles. You can get Nintendo's games on the Wii U and major third party titles and Sony's games on the PS4.

That's the way I always viewed it since the N64 days. As a gamer I want to be able to play as many of these games as I could regardless of system and some games are system exclusives now way you can play them unless you own that console.

I think most level headed people don't want Nintendo to fail, for this generation it's looking they will come third. The Wii U is a good little console the problem being it's not really caught the imagination and spec wise it's obviously not as powerful as the PS4 or X1. It's low install base does not help for big game developers, AC 3 had all the downloadble content, AC 4 does not. Rayman Legends got a six month delay (a finished game). EA has abandoned the console, this has upset a lot of Wii U owners hence some of the comments on Nlife. For the fourth generation in a row if you own a Nintendo home console and want to play all third party offerings it's looking like you will need a PS4 or X1 if you can afford it.

That's not the reason I'm upset with them. Their "efforts" on the Wii U included a delayed version they didn't care to market (Need for Speed), a rehash that's somehow worse than the other versions (Fifa), a solitary game that is the same price as a trilogy released around the same time on other platforms (Mass Effect 3), and a half-donkeyed sports game (Madden).
Then they had the nerve to say that Nintendo's console is not worth making games on...then again I'd probably agree with the Wii U not supporting their releasing half-donkeyed games strategy.
They also raised a big fuss over an "unprecedented partnership" with Nintendo in 2011. Well, actually, this is quite unprecedented...
