90s Adam Sandler movies, Nic Cage action movies, quite a lot actually. My pick has to go to The Lake House, an incredibly sappy movie with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock which apparently has 35% on Rotten Tomatoes. It isn’t good but I quite like it.
@Jimmer-jammer Yeah, I think the only one from that slightly later time period that I actually enjoyed was probably 50 First Dates. Mostly because him and Drew Barrymore are great together. I also somehow missed out The Wedding Singer which is also a classic!
Transcendence. Movie got panned hard, but most of the reviewers seemed like they failed to understand it to begin with.
Escape Room. The premise is, admittedly, pretty dumb when you find out what's going on, but I found it to be fairly engaging and effective. Looking forward to seeing the sequel soon.
The Majestic was fantastic, but critics didn't like it for some reason.
Modern classic Japanese indie horror film Suicide Club apparently wasn't rated very highly either. What the hell!
And yeah, Alien 3 is great. The last actively good movie in that franchise.
I'm sure there are a lot of others, but those are what come to mind.
@hypnotoad lol Never seen Dredd, but the Stallone one is one of my favorite bad movies. I watch it every time I come across it on TV. I won't list it with the others, though. I recognize it's a terrible film.
@Kidfried I love that Ebert just went by his own opinion though. He loved a lot of ‘bad’ movies and so gave them glowing reviews, same as he gave ‘good’ movies middling reviews. They’re always well-written enough that you can understand why he gave movies the rating he did as well. Especially the Fight Club review that echoes a lot of my own thoughts on the movie.
Mine is basically just '80s and '90s action movies because I have a special love for them.
Die Hard With A Vengeance. I love this movie and think it's legit nearly as good as the first Die Hard. It's a proper '90s action movie and I have no idea why critics were lukewarm on it.
Independence Day. This is an all time classic in gung ho American nonsense. I love it. The President gets in a fighter jet and starts shooting down alien ships. And that's like half way through. How can this not be like a 100% on Rottentomatoes?
Con Air. Nic Cage ridiculousness + John Malkovich + Ving Rhames + Steve Buscemi = glory.
Out For Justice. Steven Segal walks into a bar to get information on a lunatic murderer he needs to catch. People don't want to given him information. So Steven Segal flattens everyone. Then he walks to another bar and repeats. This is basically the whole film. Also he's called Gino Felino in it.
Robin Hood Prince of Thieves. Alan Rickman is the Sheriff of Nottingham and steals every scene he's in by being absolutely ridiculous. Plus for bonus points you can practically see the moment when Kevin Costner just couldn't even be bothered to try and do an English accent any more.
Universal Soldier. Jean Claude Van Damme is a Vietnam soldier who is killed in battle when his commanding office Dolph Lundgren goes rogue and murders the squad. Then scientists bring him back to life using science. But they also bring Dolph Lundgren back. And then they end up fighting in the future or like the present. Except it was the '90s so it's the past now. I don't know.
The remake of Ghostbusters. Admittedly I watched it many years after the hype/hate died down but it wasn't nearly as bad as everyone said it was.
Otherwise most of my suggestions have already been said and tbh I didn't realise some of these films were poorly received. Die Hard 3 is awesome. Alien 3 is decent, it's a bit like what Chronicles of Riddick is to the original Pitch Black. Except CoR is trash. I love Fight Club and Universal Soldier.
I don't really rate the first Blade Runner but I think the second one is genuinely amazing. It's one of my favourite modern sci fi films along with The Martian and Interstellar.
