Low-Poly Stealth Throwback Revives PS1 Metal Gear Solid Vibes for PS5 1

The original Metal Gear Solid will forever remain a masterpiece, but its unique isometric stealth action gameplay is a relic in this era of more sophisticated adventures.

Spy Drops, an indie game already available on Steam and Switch, isn’t interested in advancing the genre; it’s taking us right back to 1998, when Hideo Kojima’s 32-bit masterpiece originally released.

And it’s finally coming to the PS5 on 28th April, as confirmed earlier today.

Here’s the blurb, courtesy of publisher Rainy Frog:

“Experience retro 3D stealth action with modern effects, randomly generated missions, modern equipment, and local multiplayer.

As a member of the counter terrorist Spy Drops team, you are tasked with neutralizing a threat that could plunge the world into digital darkness, while you unknowingly get tangled in a deeper conspiracy.

Dropped behind enemy lines, your covert ops are to infiltrate infrastructure and undertake secret ops. While onsite you also need to make use of the Dream Catcher to extract intel from the minds of soldiers to discover the location of the next targets.”

Missions are randomly generated in this game, so you’re not getting that hand-crafted level design of the original Metal Gear Solid.

And that did lead to some less than stellar reviews when this title first released.

Gaming Age, for example, dropped a 2.5/10 score on the effort, describing it as “a poorly made imitation of a PS1-era classic” and concluded “you’d be better off going back and playing Metal Gear Solid than wasting time with this garbage”. Ouch.

To be fair, the dev has had almost a year to implement improvements for the PS5 version, so hopefully it’s listened to the feedback and updated accordingly.

There is something here, after all; the warping textures and polygonal character models fire all of the nostalgia synapses in our brains.

Is this something you’re willing to take a chance on, despite the relatively poor reception upon release last year? Let us know below.
