@Enriesto I think at this point Capcom wants all the focus on Monster Hunter until the end of the fiscal year, then RE appears in a Spring/Summer PS event.
So we're nearly at the end of April and the Spring Borderlands 4 State of Play that was announced in February hasn't aired yet. Between that and the release date trailer for Ghost of Yotei, is anyone else getting the feeling that the Borderlands 4 State of Play is this year's May/June PS event (equivalent to last year's May State of Play and 2023's May PS Showcase)?
@Grumblevolcano I don't think Sony would pass by the summer without a show that presents their own games in some capacity. The Borderlands 4 SoP could be something that follows a show of Sony's, in some fashion akin to what they did with FF7 Rebirth (where I believe the Rebirth state of play followed a week after).
It's hard to say where Sony is at and how they'll approach this summer with a presentation, so I get that there's a possibility they'll just spread out their upcoming content with Summer Games Fest and their own marketing. That said... we're approaching mid 2025, and even with their canceled games we know of, there's still a fair bit they could show us.
My prediction is they still hold their State Of Play end of May (not a showcase), and that they'll follow suit with their last show in ending with a new game announcement, like Cory's game or the next Kratos adventure. I'd love for there to be more, but I think this is a safe bet until 2026 when Naughty Dog will be closer to showing both their upcoming games with gameplay, alongside other studios close to their releases as well.
@Enriesto I was thinking about how last summer went, they announced Concord for August and GoW Ragnarok PC + Astro Bot for September in the May State of Play meanwhile Lego Horizon Adventures appeared at Summer Game Fest. Considering the pacing of releases, I think we already have the PS lineup on the console side for this year:
March - Midnight Murder Club
April - Days Gone Remastered
May - Lost Soul Aside
June - Death Stranding 2
July - Patapon 1+2 Replay
September - Marathon
October - Ghost of Yotei
TBA 2025 - Everybody's Golf Hot Shots
GTA 6 is probably a November release so I think Ghost of Yotei will be the final PS5 Sony game of the year. I could see something like this happening if Borderlands 4 State of Play is the only May/June Sony event:
Announce the release date for Everybody's Golf at the next Nintendo Direct that covers Switch 1 games (August release for the game feels like a good fit)
Ghost of Yotei at Summer Game Fest alongside a new PC port (maybe Astro Bot?)
Standalone events over the summer for Marathon and Ghost of Yotei
@Grumblevolcano Good points (sorry for the late reply), and thank you for laying out the year's upcoming releases, I think that does demonstrate that Sony is likely happy with this catalog for 2025 until what is likely the start of their end-gen blowout next year.
That said, there's a couple lingering games we haven't seen yet which we would get a glimpse from in a PS presentation:
1) Remakes - Could name a few, but the God Of War set in Greece comes to mind, as well as another mention of Japan Studio legacy titles like we saw unveiled in the last Switch 1 Direct. I hope not to be wrong, but I think we could add one of these to your list above once May has passed.
2) Resident Evil 9 - This is the big one, and anyone following the history of these shows would bet on the likelihood of it being revealed in a Playstation show. I think this will appear in a May State Of Play as the big opener, and a follow up trailer in Geoff's show the following month. It's curious that Monster Hunter showed up as the opener for the last SoP in February, because Sony knows it's not a compelling way to start a show given how hard it's been marketed. To me, it's clear how strongly tied Capcom is to Playstation as a console ecosystem, and that they're very happy to continue this pattern with Sony in their presentations. The absence of a reveal at this time (and a hint in their RE4 celebratory trailer) almost confirms a show this month with its presence finally revealed.
As for a show later this year, your point about a showcase in September is both interesting and possible. It ties into GTA's window which Sony has marketing in and an opportunity for their marketing momentum towards the holidays. That would be a fire show if it comes together.
And Astro Bot as a PC port... that's the most intriguing mention you made. I'm not fully convinced of Sony being fully non-exclusive (first party games attached to console), but if Astro Bot were to be ported to PC, then that would confirm Sony no longer considers console exclusivity a part of their strategy for their first party IPs. This would be a huge announcement for the industry in my view, because that signals a "floodgate" moment for publishing their own studio's games without limits. Astro Bot represents Playstation's very identity given its emphasis on the platform's games and history, so I don't think we'd see that announcement. But... who knows!
Anyway, we're in May now, so I guess we can sit back and wait for Grubb to share what he knows if indeed there's a show incoming.
@Enriesto With GTA6 now delayed to 2026, it now seems like the Ghost of Yotei trailer timing was that Sony received advance notice from Rockstar/Take Two and wanted to take advantage of the delay while at the same time making a clear point that the game is $70.
@Grumblevolcano right on, my thoughts exactly. This could actually be a godsend of sorts for their optics if they play their cards right going into the summer. A state of play with a couple heavy hitters would be exponential in their relatively brightened appearance within the industry, and with more room to breathe sans GTA 6, there’s a lot they can push for to gain marketing momentum.
The silence is weird. It would be really neat if Sony managed to catch leakers off guard and a SoP/showcase announcement was actually a surprise but the absence of your typical SoP/showcase rumour article from Push Square (usually happens around a month before airing) feels like Sony's going to coast off the Xbox showcase.
@Zazu Sony had 3rd parties on their side so even though Sony really messed up their 1st party pipeline by going all in on live service, the 3rd parties propped them up.
1) Grubb being one of the primary sources for something like an upcoming PS show hasn't been saying much, largely I suspect for personal reasons given what happened with his last gig, and he's likely focusing on a number of things at this time. Maybe he'll chime in soon, but I know when he was last prompted online, he said he hasn't heard anything.
2) Jade Raymond leaving her own studio, which many are inferring from poor internal reception to Fairgames, could be another reason and an unfortunate one at that. It could be that Sony was hoping to show off gameplay for a summer show of theirs like they did with Concord and are perhaps now afraid of a repeat situation. That's obvious enough to us... it's basically a matter of time before we hear that Fairgames gets put away for good. Nonetheless, it messes Sony's plans a bit for how they organize their own show, as they probably had a trailer ready to go and placed, but now have to can it with this sudden change of affairs.
3) Summer Games Fest and Xbox Showcase - like you said. I think it's (sadly) quite probable that Sony will rely on Xbox to show what games are coming to their platform given that they will now display what platforms will be receiving their announced titles in their trailers. And for Geoff's show, it's almost expected now to see a major PS announcement, and they may just amp up what they have to present here instead of their own show.
I honestly hope they don't pass on their own presentation, as I still enjoy them despite their strange pacing approach to trailer reels, both Nintendo and Microsoft seem to have a better read of their audiences on this front. But we often see at least a few very interesting games, including a first party title if we observe this past year's pattern. I'm maintaining end of the month still for a show, but we've had some bad live-service news recently which casts doubt on what they'll do.
@Enriesto Marathon news and the announcement of teamLFG (Gummy Bears) earlier this month were negative too. Considering the potential proximity of those 3 meaning they may have ended up getting new news in an event and that Push Square reported on Horizon Online perhaps being a 2025 release, it may have been that Sony were planning another live service blowout similar to the 2023 showcase.
@Grumblevolcano There seems to have been a plan of winding up the next batch of live service titles, now thwarted by these updates we’re getting. Arrested development in action… it could very well have been a showcase, which we will certainly not be getting anymore with this chaos seemingly peaking with their remainder projects. Hell, I forgot about the Horizon multiplayer, though I think we’ll still see what that’s about at some point.
Seems now at best we receive the standard SoP to kick off the summer. A big game like RE9 to initiate, and then a first party reveal (hopefully with gameplay) to cap. I think that’s the most we can hope for. Otherwise, they’ll give Keighley the reigns for any updates on the platform at SGF ‘25.
@CaptD there is a distinct lack of Spy thrillers of any gameplay style, stealth or otherwise. Hopefully Splinter Cell and 007 is the end of this. Along with the crime genre, spy thriller is criminally underutilised in gaming

@CaptD well they were chatting up a remake of the original a few years back… maybe it actually escaped from development hell. If so, following on from AC Shadows… the slow emergence from the corporate-designated quagmire that Ubisoft found itself in continues? From one Ubi-stan to the only other one left… we can but hope 😅
@CaptD I don’t believe the rumour but Nintendo Life last year reported on a rumour about Blacklist coming to Switch 1 as part of a plan to fill in 1st party Switch 1 gaps with 3rd party releases.
@Grumblevolcano
I thought Blacklist was a great game and I’m astonished it never came to PS4 especially as it was released mere months before that gem started.
@Jimmer-jammer Yakuza is a weird one. I like the charm and the stories in general from what I've seen, but I can't hack the gameplay being like an arcade game, and the environments being bland and filled with repetitive "action"
It feels like they are lazy developers keen on pumping out quantity rather than ever making their game appeal to more than their core fanbase. And I'm always shocked they don't catch heat like Ubisoft for recycling games, because they are far more prolific and recycle far more: mechanics, assets, quests etc etc than Ubisoft do, and they do it in much smaller game worlds. They don't even fully voice half of the game and just play the same music over text scrolling.
Honestly, it pains me and winds me up that they don't at least try something new 🙈🙈🙈 and thus I try not to think about the series. I know I'll never be able to finish any of their games because I always get frustrated part way in 😭
