I think the PS Studios presence will be Fairgame$, Ghost of Yotei (with release date), Days Gone Remastered and GoW 2018 Remastered.

On the 3rd party side of things my predictions are:

  • Capcom are choosing to highlight a 2026 game (Onimusha) in their event today so I think RE9 will be in State of Play (past few RE games were announced in Sony events)
  • Microsoft seems to be announcing PS5 ports at a fast rate now (today it was Age of Empires 2 and Age of Mythology) so I think Halo, Gears or Starfield will be in the State of Play.
  • Maybe something from Square Enix considering their upcoming lineup for 2025 is only the DQ1+2 remake at this point?
  • Phantom Blade Zero seems a safe guess
  • Sony had the marketing for Sonic X Shadow Generations so maybe a first look at gameplay for the new Sonic Racing game?
  • MGS Delta with a release date seems a safe guess
  • A bunch of PSVR2 games
  • Possibly Fantasy Life i though I think instead there'll be a release date reveal in a Nintendo Direct with PS version confirmed outside the Direct
  • New updates for gacha live service games?

@breakneck Square Enix used all 3 platform holder events for announcements in the August/September event period:

  • August Nintendo Direct Partner Showcase - Reminder of DQ3 remake's existence
  • September State of Play - Release date of Fantasian Neo Dimension
  • September Xbox TGS event - Announcement of 2 Mana games for Game Pass, a deeper look at DQ3 remake and announcement for FF pixel remasters for Xbox

So I think they'd use 4 events in the February - April period (a February Nintendo Direct, a February State of Play, the April Switch 2 Nintendo Direct, there's probably a March Xbox Partner Preview).

PH Brazil recently claimed that the State Of Play will be held on Feb 14.

Interesting if true, I don’t think they’ve ever held one on a Friday. Am hoping it’s extra special if such is the case, but it would likely be for something logistical or bound to some marketing bump for Western fans if this is how they’re proceeding - as opposed to “Happy Valentine’s Day, dear fans!”

@Enriesto @Herculean I checked and apart from the Demon's Souls State of Play in 2020 which took place on a Saturday, it's always been Monday - Thursday for State of Play/PS Showcase. Considering Friday is the generally the day to announce bad news, I don't see it happening on February 14th. Also Sony's earnings report is on February 13th so I think they'd want to have a State of Play before then.

February 11th or 12th feels the most likely chance for a State of Play next week.

@Grumblevolcano @Herculean I'd wager my funds on Feb. 12, and am of course skeptical of the Friday proposition by PH Brazil. I'm of the opinion as you guys are that the Nate comment ("What does your heart tell you?") was referring to the week's timeline aligning with Valentine's Day, not the day itself.

As for bad news? Apparently some lay offs have already taken place at some SIE locations, so I think that's what we're sadly in for tomorrow as an official announcement from Sony before they ease things away into their next SOP.

@Enriesto I think now it depends on whether Sony can get the PSN servers fixed in time. Would be a bad look to have a State of Play while PSN is down for what would be days at that point.

Th3solution

@Grumblevolcano Hmmm… I just thought of the conspiracy theory that maybe the PsN outage (and lack of Sony’s communication during it) is because of some major update going on in preparation for a SOP. Sometimes they make an announcement at these events where a game or demo is made available immediately at the time of announcement. Perhaps something like that going on?

Enriesto

@Grumblevolcano my thoughts exactly. There’s no way they do any presentation with this kind of crisis in place. Optically a nightmare, I hope it’s resolved internally and with players swiftly.

When will Sony reveal what it has Bluepoint (DeS Remake) and Housemarque (Returnal) working on? Since the acquisition of both companies, it has been awfully quiet...

(I secretly suspect Bluepoint are hard at work on Bloodborne remake, likely PS6 launch title....)

@Grumblevolcano I absolutely missed that... ! Feel very sorry for the devs on this one... but honestly, who is actually asking for a GoW live service game?? I am assuming this is a hangover project from the Jim Ryan era.

Announced and incoming! Here's a few predictions:

Very likely:
Death Stranding 2
Resident Evil announcement (new game, remake, remaster...)
Sonic game announcement
Level-5 game announcement/update (probably Fantasy Life)
MGS Delta trailer release date

Likely:
New Sony IP announcement (thinking Cory's game)
Days Gone Remaster
God Of War Remaster (Folks online talking about the bundle)
Marathon trailer
Fairgame$ trailer
FF9 Remake announcement trailer (I'm betting all it's coming this year, and I think Sony would try to secure this in their shows)
Ghost Of Yotei trailer (game dated, thinking June)
Horizon multiplayer game trailer

Unlikely but possible:
Square Enix new RPG announcement
Wolverine gameplay trailer
Something from Xbox Game Studios (Could be anything, even a reminder that Indy is coming in Spring)
Sega Atlus new game announcement

Dreaming:
MediEvil 2 Remake
Dark Cloud 1/2 Remake package
Something related to Ape Escape
Anything from Naughty Dog
Socom is back

This SoP has potential to be quite an exciting one. I had forgotten all about Lost Soul Aside, but I recall it looked surprisingly good that last time we saw it.

Honestly, I thought 2025 would be all about Death Stranding 2 and Ghost of Yotei (which are definitely high on the hype list still) but there’s some good looking smaller projects that could garner interest like LSA, Clair Obscur, and Split Fiction, and Where Winds Meet. It’s unfortunate that Sony has taken so long to get the first party output going because the market is getting really saturated with good content from the third party. I don’t have particular interest in some of them, but games like MH Wilds will be huge, KCD2 is a darling already, AC Shadows is going to probably attract some attention, Doom The Dark Ages, and now Xbox is poised to drop a load of their games like Indiana Jones and maybe many other legacy titles this year. It’s more competitive than ever and it would have been nice to get some of these first party games spread out the last year or two.

Either way, there’s no substitute for that first party shine, so it will be a gaming feast no matter what.

@nomither6 I guess you could put that under Dreaming. I don’t think we’ll get anything on Sly this gen.

Enriesto

Enriesto

@nomither6 I’d be very happy to be wrong, I love the Sly trilogy. I’m not sure who they (Sony) would hand the IP off to. Maybe Media Molecule? That’s why I think it’s a while coming if it exists, it would be a studio that’s not currently working on a bigger SIE ip and so it’d likely be early in development. I hope I’m wrong! Even a remake/remaster package of some kind would be Day 1 for me.

Reveals I'm hyped for: Digimon Story: Time Stranger, Days Gone Remastered, Tides of Annihilation, and Saros.

Games with dates I am tracking: Lost Soul Aside, Split Fiction, Hell Is Us, MindsEye.

I'm also excited that Lost Records: Bloom & Rage Episode 1 is "free" with PS+ Extra/Premium.

Th3solution

I had time to peruse most of the trailer from yesterday and I am surprised at what went up in my personal hype meter and what went down.

I really liked what I saw of Tides of Annihilation. It looked really great, despite so many of these ‘sword and magic character action’ games starting to really blur together. The London setting and loose Knights of the Round references really made it stand out to me (even with the questionable VA). The other exciting reveal was Saros but just a CG trailer doesn’t tell us much. It strikes me as the next evolution of Returnal though, which is one of my favorite PS5 games.

The other noteworthy game to me is the Days Gone Remaster, which I am in the middle about. I was planning to play DG anyway within the next year or so and now I’m excited to get a fully remastered version. But watching the trailer, it didn’t seem like it looked much different from what I have seen with the PS4 version…? Hard to say. I’m just wondering if it’s worth 10 bucks or if I’m fine just playing the PS4 version with the PS5 patch which apparently runs great at 60 fps. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Guess I’ll wait for reviews and Digital Foundry to tell me.

I wasn’t as impressed with Lost Soul Aside and MGS Delta as I thought I would be. The both seemed a little rough, imho.

It wasn't as bad as many are making it out to be, the internet doomerism is starting to get a little old with Sony shows. There are some games I'm genuinely excited for that are gripping me still, which doesn't happen often after any show (including Nintendo and Xbox). That said, Sony has been strange in how it addresses fan expectations... pacing was strangely off, more so than usual, with too many announcements based on games we knew about. Starting with Monster Hunter for example... that should have been something else, though I understand Hulst and the gang want to maintain an ironclad relationship with Capcom. It just felt really corpo at the beginning, with awkwardly placed trailers between one another.

That said, the second half picked up a lot and I've been rewatching the Saros and Tides of Annihilation trailers again and again. These were amazing announcements - Tides expresses everything I want in an action game, I need it now. Returnal is one of my favorite games in the last decade, never mind this gen, and I can't wait to see more from Housemarque.

Otherwise, some notable interests:

Mindseye
Lost Soul Aside
Darwin's Paradox
Hell Is Us
Lies of P dlc
Shinobi
The Midnight Walk

Some notable misses:
Death Stranding 2
Astro Bot new content (why did they not include this in their own show??)
Resident Evil (This should have replaced Onimusha news, we just saw this with Capcom)
Ghost of Yotei
A remaster that isn't Days Gone (sorry, I'm not a big fan of Bend)
A bunch of other titles I'd will into existence if I could

Overall... not a bad show, a fair few titles I'm now following I get why people expect more, that's on Sony to figure out moving forward, but the diaspora of the gaming community needs to relax a little, it wasn't terrible by any means.
