With the new heavily rumored MGS game I thought it would be a good time to have a topic about the series as a whole. Since the new game would most probably be in PS5 I put the topic here but feel free to move it.

This is a topic about the series as a whole. So, what would you like the new game to be? A new MG or a MGS1 remake? If we have an MGS remake how can they retrofit all the retcons from the other games?

And something more personal. I am a fan of the series, even if some stuff from the general arc don't make much sense if you try to think them seriously. Last time I replayed all the games was before Phantom Pain was released. I played them in release order but only those that are tied to the main arc: MG1, MG2 (those two are included in the HD Collection and in some versions of MGS3), MGS (both PS1 and Twin Snakes for original copies), Ghost Babel (I still have my original copy, this game is crazy expensive now), MGS2 (HD Collection), MGS3(HD Collection), Portable Ops (PSP OG Version), MGS4 (PS4 only), Peace Walker (HD Collection), MGS5 Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain (PS4). This is the way I tried to start the games again but now that emulation made all of them more accessible, I was thinking to play them in chronological order. Wish me good luck trying to make sense of all the retcons!

I’m a big MGS fan but honestly I am happy if they leave it well alone.

I guess it would be nice to be able to play them on my PS5, especially MGS4. But other than that, the ship has sailed as far as I’m concerned!

Ideal world… Bluepoint would remake the old MSX games - Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake in fully 3D worlds that play something like MGS4 or MGS5. Highly doubt that is what we’ll get like but a guy can dream.

I don't want Konami going rogue and making a Metal Gear Solid VI and I don't want spin-offs like Survive or the Raiden one. I will happily accept remakes if done by a talented remake studio like Bluepoint but that's about it.

Other than that I'll just take ports. I'm fine with playing the old versions on my PS5, all part of the same package, all trophied up. My yearly replays of MGS 1-4 have died off in the last few years because of how soul destroying it is to get the PS3 booted up.

I'd happily take Bluepoint remakes if they go the "Demon's Souls" route. Is your PS3 coughing and spluttering @johncalmc?

johncalmc

@LN78 No I think it works fine. Well, it works like a PS3. So it's not fine. But it's not worse than usual. My girlfriend was using it a few weeks ago to play Yakuza Dead Souls. I was actually considering getting it out so I could play Broken Sword but ideally, I would like to never have to use it again for as long as I live.

@johncalmc Why do you dislike the PlayStation 3?

@LN78 When I turned it on to install that Yakuza game a few weeks ago I needed another shave by the time it was finished.

@johncalmc 🤣. I know what you mean - the installation progress bar should just say "don't make any plans".

Stealth? Metal Gear? A Hind D? Codec? Revolution? Rex? Baker? Card Keys? Second floor basement? Psycho Mantis? Black Project? Surgical Implants? A new recruit? Genome Soldiers?

Bring it on.

Well aside from that the games are really good and that I feel really lucky to have been able to play a number of them. I think its cool and kind of scary is how it feels like games more less predicted the future in someways. I mean it feels like games message is scary relevant in today's world. It would be cool if more people had a chance to play the games and experience the story. With people I mean both the new generation of gamers that may not have the chance to play the games yet but not least non-gamers.

I mean because I think that many non gamers would find the games very interesting for its story and message. Can just image that the games influence would grow and Kojima would get even more recognition if more people would had have chance to play the games. Not least outside the gaming population. Although it may sound a bit strange I don't see that many works that has such a relevant message.

As far as remakes goes as I have stated in another thread I think that a remake of MGS4 would be very cool because that game is exclusively available on PS3 and have not get any remake to date. Also It would be so cool to see the environments of that game in 4k.

@kyleforrester87 @johncalmc Totally agree with you both.

I love the series as it is. The only things that I will consider "good" are some remakes (if done properly and respecting the originals) and ports. The chance to play MGS4 in new consoles wpuld be nice (but, as far as I know, this is only a pipe dream). But other than that, I sure hope Konami won't make a new entry or new spin-offs.

I know we can love or hate Kojima and his work, but without his "magic", the MGS series is better left alone, IMHO.

@belmont Terrific topic timing, thanks! I'm currently undertaking a partial playthrough of the series, and have just dumped a bunch of words about Metal Gear Rising in the review topic. It's a big nostalgia hit for me, as I haven't played through most of the games in almost a decade. I even went rummaging for some of my old Metal Gear merchandise this past week, and put it all back out on display.

The very best of luck with your chronological replay! That's gonna take you a while, I reckon! Speaking of which, I thought the strongest remake rumours were concerning Snake Eater, suggesting that Konami intend to bring the series back in chronological order (which makes business sense; people love Snake Eater, and it'd give them plenty of time to gauge interest in freeing Guns of the Patriots from its PS3 purgatory, which I'd imagine would be the most expensive undertaking).

I also reckon we're gonna see a remaster of Metal Gear Rising very soon, after Quinton Flynn dropped that hint about its forthcoming 10th anniversary. People seem to think it means we're getting a sequel but I don't wanna get my hopes up. I'd absolutely take a PS5 re-release, though!

That's such a great sentiment, and one I fully agree with. Very well said.

@kyleforrester87 @johncalmc @HarmanSmith What I meant to say at the original post it that it is tricky to remake MGS without taking into account retcons from the more recent games. Liquid talks in this game as he knows Big Boss, although he only knows the Phantom, I think... Also the patriots are not mentioned and Solidus is named only in Twin Snakes.

In the end of the day re-releasing in all modern platforms the HD collection (with MG1, MG2, MGS2, MSG2, Peace Walker) and re-releasing any version of MGS1 is enough. Porting MGS4 is a huge amount of work and it won't be worth if the other ports don't sell well. Since we have modern versions of MGS5 GZ and TPP we will only miss Portable Ops and, even though I love this game, I get why it is not needed.

@RogerRoger
Before considering the chronological play, I started Twin Snakes and the way women is portrayed in this game has not aged well, so I took a break and started MGS3. I opted for the HD Collection version. I will play the story in the games. Hopefully it will not take that long. TPP is pretty long due to the unskippable helicopter sequences and the whole "cassette cutscenes exposition dump" but the gameplay is stellar so I may play it a bit more. Peace Walker is a HUGE grind, especially since I will have to go for the secret final boss and MGS4 is pretty long but the other ones, since I now what I am doing and I will play them on Easy, will be "short" playthroughs.

I know that you like Rising and it would way cool if they re-released in on PS4 or PS5. I have the Steam version and the games runs good even on older PCs. Now, to be honest I am not a big fan of this game. Story wise seems that in MGS4 Raiden forgot all this character development from MGS2 and know in Rising he is also somewhat back to his pro MGS4 self. But the problem is the gameplay. It is not for me and, if I am not mistaken, you cannot play non lethally, which is one of my favourite parts of the MGS series.

@belmont If they remake the original MGS then I'm fine with them throwing some Patriots references in there to keep the throughline of the story. I'm also okay with them just pretending MGSV didn't happen and ignoring anything from that one.

With all the discussions about "MGS" remakes, I thought I might look into getting a copy of "Twin Snakes" for the Gamecube. I knew it was a relatively sought after game but I didn't realise just how much its prices had skyrocketed (along with a lot of that console's library, it would seem) since I last checked - £70 seems to be the average. Thanks but no thanks!

@LN78 In 2008 I noticed the same thing and went through a period of buying Twin Snakes on sites like Gumtree for £5-£10 and selling it on for £60+. I bought a bundle of games for £50 once primarily because Twin Snakes was in it, think I tripled my money on that lot!

It doesn't seem to have got much more expensive, but you don't see the cheap copies anymore.

I do have one copy for myself, although I never really liked it compared to the original.

@kyleforrester87 I was happy to pay £30 or thereabouts for a decent copy. £70 is a bit steep for a game that (as I recall) was pretty much broken by some of the "enhanced features" ported over from "MGS2". I think I'll just replay my PS1 copy instead - I've got the "virtual missions" expansion disc somewhere as well.

@LN78 Oh Twin Snakes is such a nice game. It was actually the first Metal Gear game I ever played and the game that basically introduced to the franchise. Love it so much! @kyleforrester87 Yeah exactly, I think I paid something in that range around that time. I think in part the nice box makes up for it, not speaking about the quality of the game itself hehe.

@RogerRoger thanks for the compliment appreciate it man.
