Topic: Internal Storage query

Hi everyone,

Firstly I'm really sorry if there have been numerous posts on this topic. I got to about page 3 in of posts and I gave up looking and the search found 0.

I, probably like many find myself in a situation where I have less than 80gb left on my internal storage. I literally have 3 games installed that's it!

I have been looking at getting an external SSD, but a friend has just said he's read somewhere that the firmware update for replacing the internal SSD is coming in March. Has anyone else read this or know of any updates? I'm loathed to pay over £100 or so for an external SSD, for the firmware to then come out and I then end up paying over £400 for an NVME replacement internal SSD!

Thanks and apologies again if this has already been posted!

Are they ps4 or ps5 games u want to use? because if its ps4 games then I WOULD just get a external hard drive, it work well with mine (I have a 1gb portable external hard drive that I picked up for like €60 and because it external it gets its power from my PS5 so no extra power cable), I will wait for Sony to enable the internal slot before I buy an SSD

Edit: I'm Pretty sure, I read somewhere that an external SSD wont work for PS5 games as the USB connection isn't fast enough!

Thanks for commenting! Was starting to worry once this was over 100 views nobody was going to.

You are right, the SSD won't play PS5 just PS4 which is fine for my COD Modern Warfare and Warzone which are both PS4 games on my PS5 but that's all that's on there except for 2 othergames for PS5. So yes an external drive will help shift like 250gb I just didn't want to go and buy one and then Sony Launch the certification of an internal NVME drive as I I'd end up paying circa £500 on an external and then an internal aswell.

I guess the main point of my post was just did anyone know anymore on the firmware update, like an estimated time till we will see one. I was told it might be next month in which case I would wait for that rather than spend money on an external but if its not then I will need to get one!

Crazy how fast 600gb goes just on 3 games!!

Thanks again for responding, appreciate it!

No problem, but i suspect we wont know about the enabling update until very close to it being released and as for a time frame, I doubt even god knows!

Btw: which games are so filling your SSD?

I think you might be right who knows eh!!
Only 3 games..

Cod MW - roughly 250gb
Cod CW - roughly 220gb
Fifa 21 - roughly 70gb

I can move MW onto an external as it's a PS4 game but even then that spare space will fill quick on the ps5 something like Valhalla I reckon would fill that almost as quickly, perhaps even quicker than COD.

It's such a conundrum for so many PS5 owners! Especially in todays age with Games all becoming larger and larger in file size and updates.

Wow, they are some big games, I have COD: CW but I didn't realize it was that size (I though it was about 130gb), but its one of the few ps5 games I have (the rest are ps4 or digital) and of them I only have COD: CW, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate Edition & Nioh Remastered - The Complete Edition (From the Nioh Collection) installed right now!

You should definitely get an external hard drive and move COD: MW (as well as any other ps4 games & their saves files) to it, as I said you can get good one for a get a decent price and I haven't seen any difference to load times etc from using it.

Your right about it being a conundrum, hopefully Sony will whitelist some SSD's soon so they can get that enabling update out!

Fingers crossed eh!

Would you say an HDD is just as capable of running the game at a decent performance as an SSD next gen one would?

You are right the HDD aren't a bad price, I have been looking at the Samsung T7 2TB and SanDisk extreme pro 2TB. These are around £150/160 average in price but pump out 10gb speeds max on USB 3.2 and 2,000mb max read speed. Not too sure how much difference that will make to an HDD I'm guessing the speed is faster through an SSD.

What do you think?

How is your COD:CW so big? I just checked my PS5's storage and its only 156GB on mine, surprisingly Nioh Remastered - The Complete Edition (From the Nioh Collection) is the smallest at only 11.83gb

As for the power of the external hard drive I'm not sure I bought the external hard drive some time before I bought my PS5 (early last year I think) for another use, so I wasn't checking spec's like you are, but I haven't noticed it causing longer than normal load times or other issues.

@Joe-Mac A few years ago I put a 2TB HDD in my PS4 and man it's a luxury having that much space, I was worried about downgrading with PS5. But I've actually had to opposite issue, go on amazon and search "Hard drive enclosure" it should cost around $10-12. If you're no longer using your PS4 you can take the HDD out and make it an external drive with the enclosure. I personally haven't been bothered with storage since launch. Hope this helps someone

I only started using the external hard drive because I had heard about the worry over the size of the internal SSD and games could be a problem but you could transfer PS4 Games to an external hard drive to free up space on the SSD and I happened to have a spare external hard drive on hand I could use at the time!

Yeah I have a ps5, which by some miracle I was able to buy on launch day (I should have gone & got some lotto tickets), and it was well worth it, great games like Call of Duty Cold War and Spiderman Remastered, Spiderman Miles Morales and Nioh looks so good and I love the Duelsense controller + the backward compatability allows me play so many good ps4 games too (some the same as if you were playing them on a ps4 pro, others with minor upgrades but some with major improvements)!

It's my first game console in many years (since the snes believe it or not, though I dabbled in PC gaming before this but not much), after seeing the pre release chatter I just decided I'd get one and I'm glad I did!

If there is one thing my COD: CW multiplayer attempts has thought me I definitely don't have a future as a professional game player! LOL

@Pditty1980 Yeah man I'm super happy with my purchase too man, I've played each of those same games and I currently on Nioh 2. Took some time to get adjusted to the ui and everything. I see a lot of people complaining about the cards and saying their useless but I couldn't disagree more. It's just that you have to train yourself to do things another way. For example if I'm playing Persona 5 and I feel like playing a ranked match of MK11 I just go to the title and scroll over to the Ranked Match card and it automatically puts me in matchmaking, I love it. Once I'm tired of MK11 I can go over to Nioh 2 and pick up where I left off just by simply using the cards. It just doesn't seem that impactful since most of us are still playing PS4 games on our PS5s

I've seen people ask what games use the Dualsense the best, 2nd to Astro from what I played Cold War is actually pretty impressive. I could have my eyes closed but I know that an enemy grenade is next to me just from the Dualsense.
