@z0d15g0d I really liked the setup in 3.0 but then it went severely downhill. I don't have a huge problem with the story they are telling, there's some interesting stuff buried in there and it might pay off, but the problem is HOW the story is told. They just seem to drag everything out, a complete overwritten yap-fest that sends me to sleep (same as Penacony).

Honestly the whole 3.x arc so far could have been told better in less than a quarter of the time. I don't feel Jarilo VI & Xianzhou Luofu had this problem, or not as badly. I'm sure it's due to the 6 week update schedule where they can only make a few hours content in that time and feel they need to drag it out to keep people engaged and playing... and i'm sure they are right, i'm sure they have the data over many games that more people would likely leave and not come back if they only put out a couple of hours of new story content every 6 weeks.

It's a fundamental problem for me where they are designing the game for the WRONG reasons, they are designing for engagement not for enjoyment. I don't care about their bottom line and how many players there are, I care if it's a worthwhile use of my time. And I feel the opportunity cost of what i'm NOT playing while I play this game is huge.

I'll be honest, i'm considering quitting HSR again because of this. It's not getting better, if anything it's getting worse and I realise how much time it takes up. Those 10-15 minutes a day on dailies add up, plus weeklies, plus story, plus events. It's a lot, and it's not very good imo. What else could I be playing in that time?

For example, I'm currently playing Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 and it's utterly brilliant, it's so much that this game isn't. In less than a week I have significantly moved the story forward in a meaningful way, I've laughed and cried and been moved by the storytelling and it feels like a completely worthwhile use of my time, i've begrudged having to do dailies and simulated universe instead. Granted most games aren't this good, CO:E33 is probably the best turn based (J)RPG I've played in a decade, but it is making me question my gaming choices even more harshly than I was before. But I was thinking this before.

Sorry for the downer post, but I'm really frustrated with HSR right now, it's just not very good imo. How do you and @Shigurui feel?

As for stats I didn't pay much attention to them for all the reasons above, but I did see:

  • 14.5 million max damage (what's even the point of this with things like Simulated Universe's absurd multipliers)
  • Most played DPS: Firefly then Acheron
  • Most played support: Pela, then Fu Xuan (I didn't get Aventurine till later)

@themightyant Yes that's exactly my issue with it at the moment and it's compounded with the fact I'm not really keen on the setting and the lack of VA also. Jarilo VI & Xianzhou didn't have this issue with story pacing or dialogue padding. Each update could be completed in a couple of hrs not dragged out to 8. You might be right that they are developing for engagement which is probably why they still haven't added an option to skip like in WuWa.
Clair Obscur looks interesting so might give that a go. I got back into Fallout 4 now that there's a huge chunk of DLC and graphical updates to enjoy.

@Shigurui I don't hate all the characters as much as you. I like Mydei and Castorice and Phainon, I just don't always like how their stories are told. I don't care for Tribbie or Aglaea or Anaxa.

Yes the anime cutscene was great and a response to people saying why are there so many great online animations (as hype trailers) but none/few in the game. I am glad they are moving them into the game.

Still prefer Amphoreus to Penacony, but it's like picking between turds.

@Shigurui Glad you felt that way, but we all like different things, I didn't like it. Except a few awesome story beats and Legend of the Galactic Baseballer (that was fun) I thought it was far more bad than good. But if you liked it more, good for you, can't argue with subjective opinions.

Just had a look at Anaxa's kit. They just made Silver Wolf completely useless.

@z0d15g0d @Shigurui hoyo clearly saw me bitching and moaning and intervened as I Just pulled Anaxa by accident with no pity. Did a 10 pull to try and get C6 Moze, got Anaxa on 4 pity and Moze, then realised I already have C6 Moze… I’m an idiot, lol

didn’t even look at his kit

God I've never struggled so much with a story in Honkai: Star Rail as I have with this new Amphoreus update.

I actually really like some of the themes and stuff they're tackling with this planet, but the writing is losing me HARD. Like these new quests last for like eight hours, and they're 90% nonsense.

HoYoverse really, really, REALLY needs to get editors. I'm struggling.

@get2sammyb As you'll see above you're not alone. It's such a shame because at it's core HSR is a great game and some of the underlying plot is good, but they seem obsessed with overwriting the game and dragging everything out to be 4x longer than it needs to be.

I recently deleted ZZZ (for the second time) as it was such a time sink (especially if playing along with other Gacha's) but at this rate I prefer what is happening there to in HSR, but 2 years of investment in HSR seems hard to give up. Sunk cost fallacy? But if it doesn't improve soon I think I'll have to get out... might need an intervention though, these games are designed to be psychologically hard to drop.

z0d15g0d

@get2sammyb Would it be possible to ask them about this when you have your next interview?

z0d15g0d

@get2sammyb I sorta agree. I thought Natlan has been pretty great and not TOO bad. But the reason I dropped ZZZ wasn't because it was worse I agree it's better written than the others, it's because I didn't have years of attachment, felt the easiest to let go. WuWa is currently probably my favourite then Genshin, but the stunning world exploration and real time combat is more my jam.

Regardless Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is really highlighting how poorly these gacha games are all written and how time can be used effectively. It's a real eye opener. These games are huge timesinks on their own (I have several thousand hours in Genshin, i'm sure you're the same) but trying to play many of them is just suck an opportunity cost. Something has to give. I haven't played Cyberpunk, or FF XVI, or Metaphor despite owning them all. Hell I haven't gotten around to Nier Automata yet.

Too many games, not enough time, yet I seem hooked on time wasting gachas. It's a problem I think many of us feel!

@get2sammyb Is it the studios who which teams you are able to interview? I'm not sure how it works in your field. Hopefully the opportunity arises soon as 6 more months of Amphoreus might be too much.

@Shigurui That's great to hear. I'm still building him but PF is what I had in mind to complete first. Who else did you put on that team?

@Shigurui @z0d15g0d As I said on the WuWa thread I’ve just deleted HSR. I’ve been complaining about everything from the story to the power creeping for months and after looking at all the other games in my backlog I could be playing that I would enjoy more it was a no brainer.

I might maybe come back at some point to see how the story pans out, but the way it’s told dragging out 2 hours of content to 8 hours… probably not.

But I hope you enjoy the trailblaze… there was a lot of fun while it lasted.

Started galactic baseballer and it's tons of fun like last time. They should make this permanent like the other endgame content.
Unfortunately since I play on PC I've started having an issue of it restarting my PC when I launch it since updating Nvidia. Extremely frustrating as it restarts at random points. I've tried every solution I could find online and even sent a message to Hoyo support but they clearly don't give 2 F's as I haven't spent whale money.

@Shigurui I'm not really playing it again. It's still on my iPad and I booted it up to:

A) Get the free monthly wishes from the shop / 7-day login wishes
B) see if Phainon was released. I always wanted him and thought maybe i'd grab him now for if I ever come back.

I'd quite like to finish the story at some point, even if it's been a bit *****, but I absolutely don't want to do the daily/weekly stuff it just eats up too much time.

But I might come back and play a chunk every so often and just ignore getting and building most new characters. So i'll probably login from time to time to get things like the monthly wishes or livestream codes, anything that's a couple of clicks, so that if I do come back I can afford some future character.

Quitting this and ZZZ is the best decision I've made in ages.

@Shigurui Thanks. With "skip" being added I might return to the game to keep up with the story a bit, skipping any of the more boring bits and watching when it heats up. But i'm not coming back for dailies/weeklies etc.

I missed your previous comment as I unwatched this topic, you have to specifically tag me for me to see it now.

re: 7 day login wishes. There was a banner to get 10x wishes if you logged in for 7 days. But this might have been part of the "return to the game" banners. I don't know precisely how it works in HSR but typically if you log in after several weeks away (often 21 days) you get lots of additional banners that reward you for coming back.

Some rewards are simply for logging in, others you have to do something to get it, it's bascially trying to get you back into the loop. This included primogems, free wishes, and some new currency to automatically complete domains without having to fight them so you could get through all your reserve trailblaze power quickly. I logged in for 7 days picked up these wishes and put it on auto battle for the latest Apocalyptic shadow and gained about 20 wishes in total. Which i'll use when I come back.

I think you have to wait 6 weeks without logging in after last getting using the "return to the game" banner to get it again. Basically you have to skip a whole patch, otherwise these return to game banners would be close to rewarding you more than playing the game!
