Topic: Your thoughts on the ff7 remake being episodic?

Yes, episodic games are a turn off for me as well. Although I think they might be going for more of a FF13 route (multiple full games using similar settings or assets) vice how we usually think of an episodic game (IE, Resident Evil Revelationso 2).

Will have to wait and see though.

If it is a transparent cash-grab, then that would be a turn off. If it means getting our mitts on the first part sooner and prevents the developers from getting in a rut for 10 years without releasing it, then I applaud them.

<dream>Also, if the first episode is PS+ giveaway I wouldn't complain. First hits free right? They just make up for it with the rest of the episodes.</dream>

If they mean it'll be a few games. If done right and not greedily, it should be fine. If they mean to do less work for more money, or the same amount of work for more money or go the telltale route, well Square, everyone finally thought you were pulling it together, but we were wrong. Seriously though, they must know that if they try to be greedy or give us a half-product, it will blow up in their faces. The expectations of the game are already insane from legacy alone; if they try something it will end terribly for them.

The original had three discs, right? If they release the game on three separate discs that each are priced around $20 (all three together priced around $60), that's fine... But, lol, what are the chances...?

Wait and see what happens first.

There was a game idea here. It's gone now.

That has the potential to suck. I'm not really against episodic but given the choice I wouldn't take it over having the entire game at once. I guess it's not a big deal providing it doesn't skip segments between episodes, and is ultimately released as a finished project. But it's a bit lame.

i'm ok if the game is broken down, after all FFVII is a HUGE game and the time and money involved must be HUGE too, plus it's not like games aint released in multiple parts is a new thing

if the first part only covered the old Disc 1 that would be hours and hours of content

plus i think people are jumping the gun here, for all we know it might be that the other parts are remakes of Crisis Core and Dirge of Cerberus, hell it could even be the second part is a game version of Advent Children or a new story after the event of DoC

i think before we all jump on the hate wagon, we should wait until more information is released about it first.

besides they said "The Story of Final Fantasy VII will be a Multi part release" not episodic and so far the story of FFVII stands at 4 games, a movie and some short stories so for all we know the other releases could be game versions of the "Episodes of" stories that bridge the gap between FFVII and FFVII:AC

@FullbringIchigo: Agree with you, I'll certainly reserve judgement. But it would have been nice to have had a boxed finished product in your hands from day one, knowing you had a nice 60+ hour game in front of you. This news kind of puts a dampener on that.

I'd like to wait and see how it all pans out before making any rash decisions.

BUT, only Square Enix could kill the hype for something like this. ONLY Square Enix. Just when you think it's doing everything right (FFXV coming along, FFVII has actual gameplay footage) it goes and does this. Incredible.

@themcnoisy: I love it, but then I'd love FF7 themed gonorrhea.

The graphics aren't going to wow anybody but it brings it upto a serviceable standard for today's displays, which is all I'd hoped.

For £8.99? Pick it up.

I don't think Square actually used the term episodic at any point. I'm happy to wait and see for the time being. If the quality and quantity is there to justify the price then that's what counts.

Considering they'll be full sized games, I don't really see the big whoop. If they genuinely have to cut it up in order to give you the experience you wanted, so be it.

From the beginning, I pretty much thought of how the game was on separate discs years ago. It's essentially the same to me.

I shall interject my two bits as a 20 year PlayStation veteran who's finished FFVII multiple times on the original platform. It was a massive game for Squaresoft and the first that I remember that spanned 3 CD-ROMs. Truly a huge game back then. Now I'm not a fan of modern gaming conventions such as episodic content, but I also realise that remaking such a huge game in HD and in 3 dimensions is a massive undertaking. To remake such a huge game is such an undertaking that requires such content in various stages. Am I a fan of such an approach, my answer is no, but is it necessary? My answer is yes. It was a massive game back in the 90s, and now trying to remake it in a single outing is almost impossible. Remember, people, much of the game was in 2D, hand drawn maps, and now it's going to be in HD. To experience it in it's entirety in HD and in 3D glory, it needs to be in an episodic format. To do it any different, means that Square-ENIX would have to delay the final product for several years in order to make it happen for the complete product without any interruption in the standard gaming convention. At least with the advent of FFVII in episodes, we fans can enjoy it as it unfolds instead of waiting years for the game to unfold.

I'm not a fan of episodic content, but I am also a realist. If we were to experience the game remake as close to the original game, we would be waiting for years for them to remake it as such.

Untill they clear up how exactly they are going to handle this episodic thingy, it's wait and see for now.
I'm not convinced that this will be for the best, it is SE after all.....
