Were gamers ever united? The console 'war' I remember the most because it was the era I was really getting into gaming was the 16-bit one. I had a Genesis, some of my friends also had Genesis, plenty of others had SNES. We'd get together at somebody's house on the weekend, depending what console was available to us we'd enjoy games on either one, but as kids there were always friendly little jabs and stuff could get a little heated from time to time as well, depending how far some would go with the insults. The N64/PSone era also had people arguing about what console was better. The internet hadn't blown up so it didn't seem that bad. It's definitely not as fun as the schoolyard arguments with friends were though.
@Demi_God: Makes sense to a point. I wouldn't necessary call them liars though. Honestly though if I had to pick one It would be PC cause a PC is just so more versatile.

Honestly it is kind of psychological. I know it is everyone's first thought is to call fanboy idiots but it has to do with cognitive dissonance. We choose a console we like so in order to keep ourselves from going mad we need to justify it to ourselves. When someone disagrees it is hard for us to accept it. Pretty interesting topic if you ask me. Of course there are idiots out there as well.

There's nothing wrong with favouring one console maker over another. The problem is the mindless idiots who can't understand that just because they like Console X that anyone who prefers Console Y or Z is automatically not a "proper gamer" and a lot or other words that if I put here will be edited by Sammy or someone. They're pathetic really.
"Oh smeg. What the smegging smegs he smegging done? He's smegging killed me."

I find a bit 'silly' to be fan of a company, I just like playstation for many reasons (starting with the controllers, I never liked xbox controllers) and actually I find nothing exciting in the xbone whether hardware or software. But I respect other people if they have different tastes. One of the things I find annoying is this tendency to call everyone 'fanboy' because they have a positive opinion concerning this or that machine. The meaning got lost and people mainly use it as a kind of insult. Most of the time its just being narrow minded. A comment I saw elsewhere was saying, 'hordes of fanboy zombies rushing to buy the PS4', that made me laugh.
The crowd, accepting this immediately, assumed the anti-Eurasian posters and banners everywhere were the result of acts of sabotage by agents of Goldstein and ripped them from the walls.

I can honestly say the only game I ever enjoyed was pokemon.
This was me more or less up until recently.
"They played us like a damn fiddle!" - MGS5
"Finish your mission, prove your loyalty." - MGS3
"We could take a s*** on you from such a height, you'd think God himself has crapped on you!" - GTA: SA
Currently Playing: The Phantom Pain.

A lot of it is the anonymity of the internet. I know it sounds cliche but while console 'wars' have always existed most of the venom spewed online would probably net you a black eye if you were bold enough to pew it at someone in real life. Theres no real consequence to it, heck people even act tough in their Youtube videos because they think they're untouchable so its not all because of anonymity.
I feel that this hatred comes from anything you can be passionate about: political parties, sports teams, even religions. And of course it comes to games too.
I lean the most towards Nintendo, and then I choose Sony. Having a third console to me would be overkill (I have a 3DS, though) so that means I am not getting an Xbox.
But that does not mean I will spend my spare time on Pure Xbox trolling and making fun of people, or criticizing each and every decision Microsoft makes. I see this kind of people a lot on Nintendo Life, and it makes me wonder if that is actually their hobby.
Kudos @SunnyShores for seeing things so clearly. At the end of the day, we are all gamers, and that is what should matter.
I will comment in this thread, never being able to find it again.

It's cause everyone has preferences, OR, they haven't properly explored all platforms as viable avenues. Say Joe Gamer has only ever played games on Platform A and has no real experience with the games offered on Platform B. As a result, Joe Gamer forms opinions and jumps to conclusions based on a number of factors (ranging from second hand opinion, peer pressure, or observation). All it takes is one knucklehead who says Platform B is garbage to influence others who have never tried playing any games on Platform B, and they in turn take that opinion as their own and use it to influence even more people who have never played games on Platform B... the cycle is vicious.
For a long time, I never played RPGs. I didn't get them. I didn't understand them. I couldn't get why or how someone could enjoy such sloggish turn-based gameplay. For YEARS I had an opinion I formed through observation. It wasn't until I played Fire Emblem Awakening on 3DS that the floodgates were finally opened. Now I love them! I'm playing FFX HD on Vita as we speak, as a matter of fact. But you couldn't convince me these games were fun beforehand no matter how hard you tried.
Likewise, many have formed opinions about Nintendo games and they don't believe they can have fun playing them, no matter how hard you try to convince them. Many have formed opinions on story-based games (often found on PS/Xbox) and they don't believe they can enjoy them no matter how hard you try to convince them. I could say the same for just about every kind of game and platform out there today. Those who have experienced the games first hand know how fun they are. It's usually the ones who have never played certain games that are the ones ridiculing them. Now, sometimes people HAVE played them but they just played the wrong ones, or sometimes they played the right ones but it just wasn't something they liked. That DOES happen. But I think any game can be enjoyed, if it's a good game. You just have to give it a chance.
Psalms 22:16 (1,000 yrs before Christ)
They pierced My hands and feet
Isaiah 53:5 (700 yrs before Christ)
He was pierced for our transgressions
Zachariah 12:10 (500 yrs before Christ)
They will look on Me whom they pierced

I don't like Titanfall and I think it's a stupid game, I hate games that use mechs. I know from looking at the gameplay of Titanfall that I won't like the game. I like FPS games and I like playing them online, but Titanfall doesn't appeal to me. I shouldn't have to go out to buy a $499 console to play the game and then finally say "well, I played it and I still don't like it".

We're all friends here! Some people just like to validate their opinion, which is where the bickering stems from. In the end, I think it's fine to favour a specific brand, but it's the people who feel the need to discredit other ones that's the problem.
It's been this way since the beginning of time, mind - SEGA does what Nintendon't, etc.
Make a successful system then destroy it from the inside with bad management? (oh how I miss those days between Sega and Nintendo)
I like having small fights with rival fans for fun's sake, but I think others from all factions take the rivalry way too far. I recall the time Final Fantasy XIII released on the Xbox 360. Sony fans took to metacritic and gave it 0/10 reviews just because they felt "betrayed" and they constantly bashed the 360 for no real reason. Someone should have given them the memo about Nintendo originally having Final Fantasy.
Heck, the head of Sony owns 2 Wii Us and actually likes Nintendo. I think we need to take a hint from Japan.
