I dont know with all the talk of upgrading your hardrive it kinda worries me. Should I look into upgrading the harddrive or is that only really necessary if you are looking into downloading a bunch of games?

500gb is a lot of space. For most people who play casually, it should be plenty. Each game will have an install of anywhere up to about 50gb but these installs can be deleted (even automatically) when the game is not being played.
I put a 640gb drive in my PS3 years ago and it just recently filled up this year. That's been with PS+ day one haha. I say don't worry about it unless you have issues deleting old games or play 10 different retail games in a short period of time.
Also, many people are doing it for the performance boost. The stock drive is 5,400rpm while you can easily get a larger drive for cheap that's 7,200rpm. It's almost guaranteed to give a noticeable performance boost (as it did with PS3).

Ok that makes sense. I have a 500gb harddrive on my Xbox 360 and I have had it for almost 2 years now and only now mange to fill it half way (of course I do need to do an annual cleaning of stuff I dont need anymore). I just wasn't sure if the PS4 games were bigger and it was something to be worried about.

For the most part, they will be much bigger. The difference this generation will be that even most disc based games will required 20-50gb installs due to the read speed limitations of bluray discs.
