Doubt it. Especially with the Neo planned. There is no reason for Sony to release a PS4 slim.

I could see it happening they're replacing the older PS4 model with this one, as this one is probably cheaper to manufacture. The Neo could then become the premium option.

Could also be a way to lure more people into investing into VR as it will become much more accessible with a cheaper console.

(Oh, you can lok this topic down, Tasuki, as there's already a great article on the FrontPage on this rumour.)

@Tasuki Too many good quality pictures for this to be fake. I'm pretty sure it's real at this point.

@Octane: Don't see what is the point. I could with the Xbox One especially due to how many Ones were sold compared to the PS4 bUT logically Sony has no reason.

I think the theory is that, if real, this new PS4 will likely be using much cheaper parts. So the Neo will occupy the high-end space (probably $399) while the Slim occupies the low-end space (probably $249-$299). Hardcore fans will upgrade to the Neo; those who haven't bought a PS4 yet will get the Slim with CoD and Madden/FIFA or whatever.

They hit all bases, and in theory, give the PS4 brand one last massive push to maximise its install base over the next three years before PS5. Makes sense to me, but we need more details first. Just my speculation.

@Tasuki: Cheaper components so they get higher margins. If the chassis is smaller then they'll have shrunk the innards, lowering costs on parts. Plus smaller form factor means cheaper storage and transit.

If they just reduced the current PS4, they may not get the same profit margins on it. I'm surprised too tbh, but I think that's what's going on.

Tasuki

@get2sammyb: Yeah I guess it's to entice people who haven't bought a PS4 yet, but honestly with the way their sales have been with the PS4 it seems that anyone who wanted a PS4 has already bought one now.

@Tasuki: It's currently outselling the Wii and that system slowed down a lot during its last years. So if Sony can keep this momentum, we're definitely looking at 100 million potential sales. They're barely halfway. Not sure how much that comparison is worth, but I do believe that they maximum potential userbase is still a lot bigger than it currently is.

@Tasuki I tend to agree with @Octane. I have a lot of friends that still play on their PS3's. They're just waiting for "the price drop". I think the Slim might push them just enough to invest in the next generation.

I am just wondering this is the real thing how did these people get it without Sony knowing. Or did Sony send them one in a way to create hype for it.

To me it sounds like very shady business; rumours are it's stolen hardware.

Then if it's stolen then why haven't these people been arrested?

@Tasuki: Yeah! Exactly! Arrested! And also, this thing's been all over the internet...I would think that Sony would've made a formal announcement by now as damage control. They can't let the first impression of the system be some crappy photos of the it sitting in some guy's house, and some sloppy video of the controller!

Is this already old news? Can I still say something? I've been thinking about the slim and although I'm not getting it, this is a good thing for everybody. The fact that Sony is releasing a new version of the regular PS4 should instill some confidence that the PS4 will be supported for a good while and won't not phased out immediately in favour of the NEO. No NEO exclusives in the coming years; and that's a good thing for everybody.

@Octane: It wouldn't be the first time that Sony release a new version of a 'last' gen console when a 'new' gen console is out. I am sure Sony released new PSone after it had been 'replaced' by the PS2. The PS2 finally ended its manufacturing in 2013, the year the PS4 came out - a couple of its 'slimline' models released in 2007 and 08 - after the PS3 released. In 2012, Sony released a super-slim PS3 - a year before the PS4 released. All this shows that Sony will continue releasing variations as long as there is a 'demand' but that is no indication that Sony also wont release 'next' gen hardware if and when they feel the need.
The fact the 'Neo' is expected to be a 'PS4' albeit with a bit more 'oomph' - not a 'PS5', use exactly the same discs that will have PS4 on the box - Not go into a shop and buy the PS4 or the 'Neo' disc etc is more of indication that Sony are looking to drag out the 4th Gen hardware a bit longer. Had they just brought out a 'Slim', the question about this gens life would be much more prevalent due to the lack of 'relative' power in modern gaming. Yes it maybe the most powerful console on the market at the moment but it can't deliver consistency - some games are 'up to' 1080p with Dynamic Resolutions, up to 30/60fps with unlocked frame rates. We also see screen tear issues, texture/visual pop-in etc in a number of games. We are likely to see more and more games struggling to hit 1080p as more and more people upgrade to 4k TV's. As a result, he longer this generation lasts, the more people will question how long this generation can go on for. The Neo at least can buy some time...

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...

@BAMozzy: Fair enough, but to me it looks like they're introducing two new models, instead of just a slim model in the past; and I doubt they'll drop support for the vanilla PS4 next year already. I don't know, maybe it's not really an argument, I just don't believe the doom stories about the NEO exclusives will happen as soon as some people think. To me the fact that they're going to sell these two systems alongside each other, seem like they're planning to support both for the time they last.

Octane

Tasuki

@Octane: If the Neo is anything like the Scorpio which why it wouldn't be would just be dumb on Sony's part, it will essential be the PS5. Which Sony releasing a slim PS4 at this time is not uncommon.
