Hello, I just bought a used PS4 coming from a PS1. The fan sounds like a jet plane so I wondered if this was normal or what can I do to fix this? If normal, are there other models without this issue.
@dctaz37 Hi there! PS4's are renowned for their noisy fans. If you have the original model PS4, this is probably the loudest but the Slim and PS4 Pro are a little quieter but do still get loud. Certain games that are graphically intensive will impact this. God of War and The Last of Us 2 nearly made my PS4 Pro take off.
That said, there are some things you can try.
1) Ensure adequate ventilation. Check online guides but ideally should have lots of space behind and around it to get good airflow. Keep it in a cool place (i.e. not next to anywhere hot, like a radiator etc).
2) If it is used it could have accumulated a lot of dust which will affect fan performance. There are numerous trusted Youtube videos on how to clean out a dusty fan. Depending on model, this may be easier or harder. The PS4 pro, for example, has a clip on lid that is easy to open and access the fan. However note that you'll need to open up the PS4 and run the risk of damage if you do anything wrong.
These steps won't eliminate fan noise but might help. If it is all clean and in a good spot, it should then just be that the PS4 is trying to cool itself on some high end games!
Now I may be an idiot, but there's one thing I am not sir, and that sir, is an idiot
