Just found this on the procedural generation in the making of Elite - well worth a read, puts my thoughts of NMS into perspective. I still haven't played NMS but feel this authors hit the nail on the head.

Right I can't seem to find the formula for anitmatter anywhere. I sold my first ship and my second for that matter before I ever considered hyperdrive and leaving my start system. Now I don't have any mission to the locked warehouse thingy that has the formula inside. Anyone any ideas how to get past this? The space stations don't seem to stock antimatter.
@kyleforrester87: For sure, I was kinda like that in the start. Not to mention I had to restard twice due to the HyperDrive and Anti Matter bugs, so I was getting pretty annoyed. But the core loop had me quite interested and its a really gorgeous game in motion. I hope they really end up adding some good stuff in updates because I'd really love to see it fleshed out a bit more.
@BAMozzy: Ahh, I see. I watch his Jimquisions, but a lot of stuff he says just really doesn't gel with me. Especially regarding his politics and localization and censorship in the industry. I watched his impressions of the game and he didn't seem to like it so I'll definitely check out his review.
Thought I'd jump in here after playing for a while. So far I am absolutely loving it!
I'm currently in my second system and on my 7th planet. There's something about the sensations this game gives you through exploring that is simply incredible. I feel there's just a joy and awe of finding new things. Perhaps my favourite aspect is the learning of alien languages, piecing it together and gradually understanding everything - and then there are the multiple choices.
Is anyone else of the opinion that this game would be better if they just removed the combat entirely? I know some people love blowing stuff up, and some think that No Man's Sky already suffers from a lack of things to do, but honestly, I just like chilling out on these planets and walking about and recording the animals and plants and collecting minerals and whatnot. Every time one of those sentinels turns up I'm like URGH fun police.
Still really liking the game, but I totally get the reviews. If I was reviewing this, so far, I'd be leaning to a 7 I think. I haven't put as much time into it as a lot of people though. It's kinda lonely, and kinda relaxing, and not exactly exciting, but kind awesome (literal sense) all at the same time. Very impressive, but not for everyone.
@madaussiebloke cheers for that bud, i've been pulling my hair out and kicking myself for not following the step by step instructions at the start. And I'm not for restarting for anyone. I've 250 words learned from the Korvak's and I'm finally getting to understand their talk. It's just the odd word missing now.
I'm two hrs in and I can already feel the luster wearing... This game will be cool to come back to every once in a while, but I don't think I (personally) will get nearly as much out of is as I would an old school rpg on SNES, or PS1 - so maybe that just says something more about my taste than the game itself....
So, what types of ships are people using?? I have 2,000,000+ units, so I can buy a nice ship, just not sure what to get except one with lots of space .... I've only seen up to 24 slots.... not sure if there is a big difference aside from that. I hear some are fighter and some are trader, etc.... not sure how to tell the difference except looks. Also, Gek ships look terrible
@Mega-Gazz: Apparently the maximum amount of inventory slots is 48, and that goes for ships and your exosuit. I've seen a huge trading ship that had about 40 slots, and it was ridiculously expensive!
I think this game has one of those recipe/item detectors that causes the item(s) you need to be HARD to find. I spent two hours looking for more antimatter/or the recipe for it, and could not find it!!! And what did my friend do on his game, found it in about his first 2 hours of playing....rrr...Still love the game though, because, now I only have enough hyperdrive energy to make one jump then I am stuck until I find more...should I jump, or keep scouring my current planets???? Oh the decisions!!
If anyone is frustrated about how slow it is to get around a planet on foot there's a boost jump which gets you around super fast. To do it you run then melee attack and then use your jetpack in quick succession. It can easily make a 2 minute run into 30 seconds!
Just discovered accidentally... placement of suit/ship/gun upgrades matters... if you put two related upgrades next to each other - e.g. a shield upgrade next to your shields - they'll outline in a colour and.... well presumably do something good.
