@TheOtherEden welcome to the forum! I was a lurker once but I felt compelled to make an account to offer more information on an unintentionally misleading article on Nintendo Life and then ended up over here. The PushSquare bunch are great people to have a chat with!

I bought an Xbox for a couple exclusives last year too! I actually haven't played much of the two I bought with it (Killer Instinct and Rare Replay). I got the game pass offer and used it to play the exclusives that I'm less interested in and probably wouldn't buy like Gears of War and Halo. Funnily enough, despite my general lack of interest in non-Kart racing games, my favourite Xbox games have ended up being Forza Horizon 3+4. They really are just brilliant games.

I try to limit myself to 3 games at maximum, normally one main game (on any console) I'm playing through to the end by myself. Another one I'll play with my partner so I can show her the great games I have played before (again on any console), bless her, she acts interested at least 🙄. And then occasionally I'll dip into something else a bit less intensive like Forza or something short on the Switch while I'm in bed.

I used to be a bit rubbish at starting games, especially when it was a busy release period like when RDR2, Dragonball FighterZ and Soul Calibur 6 came out (all three remain unfinished for me 🤦🏻‍♂️). But lockdown has really allowed me to focus and complete a lot of games. I'm pushing 50 games completed since lockdown started, it's been a combination of backlog, game pass and replaying games for my partner to see.

See ya!

I mostly only ever play one game at a time and I'll finish that and then move on to the next one on the list. The exceptions to this are:

1. If something new comes out that I'm super excited for I'll play that then go back to the last game;
2. If I get a game to review I play that and go back to the last game;
3. I'll sometimes switch to a second, lighter, more evergreen game if I'm playing something heavy and it gets oppressive. Like, at the minute I'm playing Nioh 2 but I was getting my head kicked in at this one area so when I get annoyed I knock it off for a while and I'll play either something light - like a Mario or whatever - or something that I can just have a game on and then leave like Civilization, or something like that.

I only ever play one game at a time too.

Time for gaming is a bit less for me these days so if I end up flitting between games I never get anything finished and I easily forget where I was storywise.

That said, it’s very rare I’ve ever had more than one game on the go at a time as I like to commit to them. It’s very rare I don’t finish a game whereas I would probably drift away from games more if I had multiple on the go.

Yeah, usually one game at a time for me. Although I sometimes stop for a bit if I know I'm going to have a busy spell, such as at Christmas, kind of like those mid-season breaks they have in the US. I did it with The Witcher 3, and Bloodborne as well I think.

In this break I'll sometimes complete a smaller, easier game.

I usually have a couple of drop in/drop out games on the go as well, like a racer or Fall Guys, something like that

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

@johncalmc Which area's kicking your head in? I really struggled with the swamp area, third level I think

@Gremio108 I got stuck relatively early actually. It was I think the 5th or 6th mainline mission. I ended up respeccing my character and I was alright. I'd been silly and tried to invest points in two weapons so I could mix and match but it just meant I wasn't outputting as much damage as I could if I concentrated on one.

Usually 3 or 4 at a time in rotation. Typically a racing game, GaaS title, a single player/trophy hunting game, and whatever co-op game my kids and I are into at the time. Get a little bit of everything,

Well I am about to finish Persona 3 and move on to Persona 4 Golden while also starting Metal Gear and Final Fantasy runthroughs so there is that

3 - 7 at pretty much any given time. And usually multiple games I need to return to with multiple playthroughs (Resident Evil 2), post-game playthroughs (Dragon Quest XI S), and DLC (The Witcher 3).

Currently Playing: Yakuza Kiwami 2 (SD)

I used to just play whatever I fancied, so I now have a massive backlog. I've started playing one single player game at a time recently though and find it a lot better. I have a couple of multiplayer games installed too. That's why the PS5's storage size doesn't bother me, because I'll only have one or two games installed at any one time.

@johncalmc That's what I did in Nioh 1. Took me half the game to properly sort myself back out.

Nioh 2 on the other hand - tonfa all the way, never looked back

Good job, Parappa. You can go on to the next stage now.

I try and stay focused on one game at a time. Sometimes I'll need to shake things up for variety's sake, though, so I've recently expanded that rule to "one game per console" and it helps; using different hardware prevents similar experiences blending together in my brain. This potentially means that I could be playing eight games alongside one another, but I usually draw the line at three.

Also yes, a belated welcome aboard the boards, @TheOtherEden (and thanks for the good question)! Like you, I at least know what I'm going to play before I play it, and won't turn a console on without knowing why I'm about to do so. I have a couple of random games installed on my PS4 which I'll occasionally boot up whenever I'm feeling unfocused (an MMORPG where I just wander around because I like the atmosphere, and a multiplayer shooter which I platinumed long ago, so it doesn't matter if I'm rubbish at it) and I also like replaying individual levels of some classic favourites, but I still need to think "yeah, I'll do that now" and all of my consoles are fully powered down whenever I'm not using them.

@RogerRoger Interesting. With the move toward digital games and the requirement to have huge files predownloaded onto the hard drive with all the latest patches, it’s made me become more purposeful and calculated in my gameplay sessions. I have to plan ahead a little more before I start to play, especially if I’m starting a new game. As a consequence I’ve loaded several games onto my drive so that they will be there in case I get a sudden urge. I’ve gotten those urges before to play something random in my collection, only to find out that I haven’t installed the game and there are large updates, etc, and so while I do that, the emotion passes and I lost my appetite to try the game (This happened recently with FF7R where I was itching to play it, but by the time I went back the next day after installing it, the moment had passed).

It’s strange because by the same token, having a digital library actually enhances the spontaneity of what I might play on a given day, so long as the game’s been downloaded. Not having to get off the couch to boot up a quick Battlefront 2 match after playing Ghost of Tsushima for 3 hours is very convenient.

Not sure if I’m making sense here, but I guess what I’m observing is that the digital age has caused a shift in how we plan and play our games. It has simultaneously made things more spontaneous and also less spontaneous, if that’s possible.

@Th3solution Yeah, I reckon my lack of spontaneity (wow, did I mangle the spelling of that word... praise be, spellcheck) has stood me in good stead this past generation. The other week, when I fancied replaying Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception, it took a full hour to install the data from the disk, alongside downloading and installing its latest patch. It couldn't be a spur-of-the-moment thing; since I'd made up my mind the previous day, I thankfully still wanted to play it after that hour had passed.

I know what you're getting at, though. It's a weird paradox where gaming has become equally accessible and inaccessible, and it's something we never had to contend with before. I sit there on a lazy day, scrolling through my PS4's Library page, and I'm tempted by a screen filled with PS Plus games which I've claimed, but never played... and yet I always end up shutting down and walking away, because almost all of them represent a commitment that I'm not prepared to make when scrolling around out of boredom. In those rare in-between days, I'm therefore always gonna lean towards thinking "Ah, I'll just play a quick Split/Second race on my PS3, then!" than I am to sit around, waiting for WipEout to re-install on my PS4 (providing I've even got the HDD space to do so).

I'm lucky to have a wide range of retro consoles, though. I can always just pick up and play something else on another system (well, maybe not handhelds, because they need charging first). If the PS4 was my only gaming hardware, I think the whole HDD management thing would be a serious frustration.

Especially considering that the two games I mentioned previously, ones I keep installed specifically for random days, almost always have a new patch to install whenever I turn my console on.

I play one game until I complete it, i will have a multiplayer or sports game though helps sometimes if I get stuck or feel like its becoming a grind at certain points, nice change of pace sometimes helps especially when its a big game (The Witcher or Red Dead).

Although since my son has got a bit older (4 YO) and he has his own switch I sometimes play switch games with him and we actually completed the Kingdom Hearts games together on the ps4 which I was really proud of, I probably wouldn't of tried them if not for him and he actually managed to do a lot of them with just me watching and instructing.
