So after thoroughly enjoying God of War 2018 at release, I kinda regretted having never played any of the previous entries. Sure, I knew they were more character-action than action-adventure and that they had a bit of a reputation (as do most character-action games) for being a bit button-bashy… but GoW hit me hard.

Around two years later, and I noticed that a mate on my friends list had recently plat’d God of War 3: Remastered. It piqued some interest for sure but I was a bit wary of simply jumping in to the Greek saga at its conclusion without the context of having experienced the games that came before… and my PS2 was a distant memory. Can’t even remember what I did with it in all honesty.

A couple of months later and I noticed a second-hand copy of God of War Collection: Volume 2 on PS3 at my local CEX. I’d recently dusted off the PS3 to play Demons Souls and even though I couldn’t see a copy of Volume 1, I picked it up without too much thought. That evening I got home and tracked down a copy of God of War Collection: Volume 1 on eBay and put the order through. I also ordered God of War: Ascension and God of War 3: Remastered while I was at it. I figured that if I could fit one into my already crowded schedule every now and then, that I might have them all finished and plat’d in time to play the eventual sequel to God of War 2018 (of course now known as God of War: Ragnarok).

Well, that was around July 2020… and I just popped the plat on God of War 3: Remastered, which was the last remaining game set in the Greek era that I had left to play. Just checked through my trophy list and can see that I finished God of War on 26/08/2020 and God of War: Chains of Olympus on 16/09/2020. I joined Push Square in Dec 2020, found this thread pretty early on and obviously took the opportunity to add my progress and intentions to see the series through. Then I finished God of War: Ghost of Sparta on 20/04/2021, God of War 2 on 29/04/2021, God of War: Ascension on 03/05/2022 and obviously GoW3 today. It’s been a helluva ride… and though I always kinda felt like-warm when considering making a start on any of them (there’s a lot of competition in my backlog), I always ended up not only really enjoying them… but also appreciating the layers to the combat that are easily forgotten (or never even needed to be peeled back if not going for the plat).

GoW 3 in particular was a very… very good game. It’s extremely difficult to end a successful entertainment series in a satisfying manner, as proven by almost every ‘great’ trilogy of film and gaming… but they definitely achieved it here that’s for sure.

I’m gonna enjoy a nice break from the character and his world now… but I have God of War: Ragnarok pre-ordered (only the Collectors Edition sadly, I missed out on the Jotnar 😔)… and I’ve also made sure that I have a week off from work to just drink that **** in come November. Can’t wait.

@colonelkilgore It’s been quite a journey for you. Having played all the GoW games within a two year period gives you quite the perspective. Most of us played them more gradually over the years on the previous consoles, but I’m glad you really ended on a high. But I believe Ragnarok is going to blow away all previous entries in the series.

@Th3solution yeah GoW3 really does leave me with a sweet taste in the mouth in regards to the series.

Although my blinkered approach to gaming during the PS2 and PS3 eras has left me with a helluva backlog, the silver lining is that I get to go back and play these classic series’ in a relatively short timeframe and everything remains pretty fresh in the mind. So thats the Metal Gear Solid and God of War games done… and I’m around halfway through the Assassins Creed series. After that I have the Resident Evil and Devil May Cry games to make my way through and then I should be all caught up 😅.

@AgentCooper I’m excited for you dude… hopefully it clicks for you. Obviously no game is for everyone… but this one pushes the boundary on that statement.

@AgentCooper I never really liked the previous games and wasn't interested in this one until quite late just before it released. It become one of my favourite games of last gen, right up there with Zelda BOTW and Sekiro. Hopefully you will also find as much enjoyment out of it also.

@AgentCooper @JohnnyShoulder I had a similar ‘pleasant surprise’ reaction to GoW (2018). I wasn’t looking forward to it, and played it way past the hype period of 10/10’s and Barlog’s accompanying emotional reactions on Twitter. For some reason despite all the huge praise and GOTY awards, I still didn’t think I was destined to be blown away by it. And yet, it truly delivered for me.

Strangely enough, I’m finding myself feeling a similar preconception to Ragnarok. I’m sure it will be good, but I’m feeling it may already be a smidge over-hyped so I’m likely to wait a few months before playing it.

@AgentCooper I hear you completely on the loaded plate issue. Some of it is the explosion of multimedia entertainment options over the last 10 years. It’s an embarrassment of riches for things previously felt to be niche or associated only with nerd culture (sci-fi fantasy and superhero shows and movies, anime, video games, etc.), not to mention the technological advancement which has put more media options in the palm of our hand than we could consume in a lifetime. But secondly, as time marches on and we are all forced to be adults, we have stupid adult responsibilities like earning a living and such. 😅

Sometimes I wish things were simpler.

@AgentCooper the irony is that in the build up to God of War 2018’s release I had no expectations at all… at that point I’d never even considered playing any of the Greek saga and was just in the mood to play souls-likes. I’d played Horizon zero Dawn the year before and that was the first Sony 1st Party exclusive which blew my doors off… but I still didn’t think I’d actually give the God ofWar reboot a chance. Then all the 10/10’s dropped and I was probably 10 hours away from the Dark Souls 2 plat and hadn’t lined up anything next so I thought what the hell. I waited until I popped DS2 and then started GoW around a week after it released with very middling expectations still… and it absolutely slayed me! One of the reasons that I am as into gaming as I am today tbh.

@AgentCooper my ‘passion’ for gaming is actually much more indicative of my apathy for this sinking ship of a civilisation that we all survive on a daily basis irl tbh. Us gamers are basically the enduring orchestra on a post-iceberg titanic 🥳

@AgentCooper lol… glad you found some appreciation for my Nietzchean-ly pitch-as-black outlook there agent.

Oh well, I guess that I’ll hoist myself out of bed and stumble into the gaming room… and with controller now firmly in hand - “once more with feeling gentlemen” Nearer my God to Thee… and a one and a two…

Man, my thoughts exactly. 😅
I might have to borrow this as my own personal slogan.

@colonelkilgore I think we all definitely share some common bond, for sure. The reason I play games is largely for the escapism. I’m not sure how I’d handle the stress of life without them!

I was thinking about that fact recently and I realized if I didn’t have gaming to look forward to after a long week or a hard day, then I’d have to find something else for stress release. I’m not sure what that would be though. I’d probably have to buy a punching bag. 😄

@colonelkilgore I think alot of gamers are the same mate, its a really good place to get lost in. Gaming has become an a escape for alot of people and its almost more than a hobby for some, I don't mean in an addictive way but more of a passion.

@Th3solution I have been similar thoughts to your self in that they hype is sort of killing the vibe a little for me, Not that I don't for one second think that it's going to be amazing my probable Game of the year but I played the God Of War (2018) over a year after it came out and all the initial hype had been and gone and I absolutely loved the game, I have even gone as far as cancelling my pre-order and you know how excited I have been for this game, its just I think I don't like been part of the crowd or doing what's cool because the masses say and with Elden Ring already dominating this year and every man and his dog playing it at the same time I now feel ready to play Elden Ring so now want to play it a good 6 months after it's release, I can enjoy it at my own pace that way rather than feeling the need to keep up with the millions posting all over the Internet how they've Platinumed the game 9 times in the first 6 hours.

Th3solution

@MaulTsir I’m with you. Had a similar experience with The Last of Us 2 and Miles Morales. Absolutely loved both games, but I think I enjoyed them because I waited until hype died down.

It’s weird, because sometimes it’s more enjoyable to play a game in the zeitgeist of its release, with all the excitement, but lately I’m more prone to wait and let it die down, like you mentioned.

@MaulTsir @Th3solution Also, even the biggest games seem to get small updates over the first few weeks/months so I’m happy to hold out.

@Th3solution @MaulTsir I have probably said this before, but I don't get hyped about much these says as I've been hugely disappointed so many times when getting caught up in it. Elden Ring I was obviously hugely excited about, but before the games were Demon's and Cyberpunk. Everything else I'm prepared to wait for, even if it is only a few weeks.

I’ve been pretty upfront about how I’ve been looking forward to Ragnarok for a while (ooooh… since about April 2018) but all of these previews that have been popping up across YouTube are just taking my hype to eleven.

It’s so nice when a big game gets into the hands of journo’s this early… and that they’re allowed to chat about it. I obviously know why most devs don’t do this (FEAR) but as a result the fact that it does seem so rare just adds even more weight to it on the odd occasion that it happens.

I've never played 2018's GoW, and my familiarity with the franchise is limited, but I agree fully that this game seems to 100% guaranteed a 'sure thing'.

I can't see a world where this game doesn't stick the landing... and it must be a hugely exciting time for those who played/enjoyed GoW 2018!

IMO this seems to be the only game that has potential to knock Elden Ring from attaining the 2022 GOTY award. Sony could really do with a great exclusive at this time also...
