Pretty much every game i've bought for the PS4 except for about 3 game's, for me this gen has been dismal. Dark Souls 3, The Division both dissapointing Overwatch is OK I suppose and the inevitable dissapointment that will be BF1 spring's to mind. That's how bad this gen is I KNOW I won't like BF1 but i'm still getting it as it's the most appealing out of the next fresh trashy batch of 1st person shooter's coming out soon. The game I play the most on my PS4 atm is BF4 and i've had that game since before PS4 even launched, crap gen. Everything has been casualised for this gen, the Dark Soul's and Metal Gear's of this world have been casualised for the facebook gamer and infinite universes have been decorated the same from start to finish and game's/emotion sim's like Journey and Inside get 10/10 and are claimed to be "best game of the year" So yeah pretty much every game i've bought this gen apart from about 3 is my answer.

@Fight_Teza_Fight: well at that price it's worth it but apart from the Nemesis system (which wasn't all that great anyway) there isn't much different, the story is the same, the characters are the same, the game play is the same

it's still just basically Assassins Creed with a LotR skin

"I pity you. You just don't get it at all...there's not a thing I don't cherish!"

"Now! This is it! Now is the time to choose! Die and be free of pain or live and fight your sorrow! Now is the time to shape your stories! Your fate is in your hands!

I wonder what they are gunna choose out of the crap we've been offered this gen to use as remaster's for next gen. None spring to mind, because none of them are good enough.

@xMEADx: Sounds like this is the generation built especially for you!

In all seriousness I can see your point and rogue likes (other Than Rogue Legacy) and action RPGs (other than mgs pp) have become my least favourite genres as all the games have familiar mechanics. This also extends to FPS, openworld games and Driving games. Just don't buy multiples of the same style of game every year as they are all trying to capture the same market.

Hard to say "regret", as with anything, you spend money on a hobby, some things are brilliant, some less so. It's only the dross for comparison that makes the cream of the crop better.
My most "underwhelming" games recently have been;
Dishonoured - It's ok, a nice sum of familiar parts, but I don't get the "game of the year" chat this had, even retrospectively.
Gravity Rush - I get why people like it, I so wanted to like it, but it's just so brown, and boring. Maybe this being a VITA port is the same as playing "Liberty City Stories" on the PS2, or "Peace Walker" on the PS3, it's "ok", but you can feel the handheld limitations exposed more when "blown up".
Yakuza 5 - I loved Yakuza 4, but for some reason this just didn't click for me, I'd waited for years for it to come out and it was just "ok", I did the first couple of sections, but just had no inclination to finish it, which was a real shame.

@xMEADx: This gen is basically what I expected the last gen to be like when I still had a PS2 and was watching trailers for PS3 games like Motostorm/Tekken and Killzone (all though to be fair they nailed the graphics with Killzone 2). Ultimately I was left disappointed with PS3, with games like Skyrim creaking along on way underpowered hardware.

PS4 and XB1 arnt exactly powerhouses but when they came along games finally started to look how I expected them to, plus indies really came into their stride toward the end of last gen and more so on current gen which has given plenty of variety.

Plus we got Alien Isolation, the Alien game I've wanted to play since I was like 10, so that's great too

Normally I'm pretty good about not buying a game until I know a decent amount about it, but this all time list of my 5 disappointing games represents the ones that I either gave the benefit of a doubt, or hyped myself into getting day one despite the warnings.

1. Destiny (PS4) - I paid $60 for a (sub par) demo. The sound is great, the graphics are decent, but the gameplay was/is incredibly boring and unrewarding.
2. Halo 2 (Xbox) - I waited sooooo long for this game, but the gameplay and story felt terrible compared to the original. Just about every aspect of this game felt sloppy.
3. PayDay 2 (PS4) - I Paid $30 for a really fun but broken game with no support.
4. MGS5 (PS4) - Tricky to justify, but my extreme love for the series made this title one of the most disappointing games I've played.
5. Borderlands 2 (Vita) - This one was my fault for not listening to the reviews... but this one was nearly unplayable for me. The game is FANTASTIC on PS4, but the Vita port is one of the worst ports I've ever witnessed.'

Honorable mention: Monster Hunter 3 (Wii) - Terrible in every way compared to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite or Monster Hunter 3rd P. I didn't pay any money for this one, or else it would be higher on the list.

Nothin' worse than buying a digital game and quickly realizing, "Oh...my...god...this game SUCKS. And there's NO way for me to get my money back!!!" That's in-part why I've started going back to disc-versions, until PSN adopts some kind of refund policy.

  • The Order 1886: game looked amazing, knew it was supposed to be horribly generic (which I tend to enjoy), and I honestly felt bad for the developers. There's just something about it, though, that makes me completely lose interest after half-an-hour.
  • GTA V: I normally just mess around in GTA, and I was just NOT allowed to do that in this game. In the middle of a boring mission and see something interesting going on in the distance? Too bad, it's MISSION FAILED and the game ends if you leave the mission area. Punch a pedestrian? Well, looks like the police have to chase you down and kill you. Etc. Tried to love it, just ended up HATING it. Tough $60 to swallow.

Make it a great day!

Fallout 4 - Got it at full price and just could not get into it. The dialogue system sucks, the world is uninteresting, and the crafting stuff bored me to tears.

The Last of Us: Remastered - Only paid $20 for this, but it still felt like a waste of money. Boring plank moving puzzles. Boring sections where you creep around killing generic mooks. Dull and depressing world that the game won't really let you explore. Too many forced walking sections and setpieces. Bah!

Bloodborne - Not a bad game, but it got boring fast. Most of the locations look too similar. I wish I'd waited for it to drop in price.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD - Bought it at full price and still have yet to even try playing it.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 1 - Dull gameplay. Annoying, tropey characters. Horrible dungeons. I only paid $14 for this, but it was still a waste of money.

update: The Division

Bought on sale. Had it for a while, started it today, returning it tomorrow for some store credit. Absolute thrash. The only redeeming quality of this game is that I like the shooting & the sticky bomb.

Batman Arkham knight, the batmobile sections ruined the whole game for me. I got so frustrated I ended up deleting the game. At least I bought it on sale.
