"Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform. There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer, what do they think is going to put them in the best fit. We're not going to dictate that, we're gonna give them a platform to publish on. The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement."  - Jack Tretton

He's referring to online passes......so nothing changes period. I saw people freaking out calling sony liars and crap........when all they are mentioning.....in a weird way is just online passes. So Sony is refusing a disc DRM period but a publisher can put an online pass in their.....however singleplayer must be playable offline and without activation or connectivity to any sort of account.

"Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever." This was jack's updated quote because people were freaking out.

Welcome to the winners of next gen gaming on the PS4--------the consumer.

Yes there was a massive fallout on Twitter after the interview where people were losing their minds. Opportunistic journalists were diving onto the quote and damning Sony without giving them any time to clarify - it was chaos for about 20 minutes before Sony came out and put it right.

Lost a lot of respect for some people on Twitter today when the news broke - far too many people jumping to conclusions and doing their very best to spread total misinformation, whether it was to get site hits or just because they would have loved to see Sony crash and burn.

Very disappointing when the media latches onto things like this without looking into the details.

After watching Sony's tutorial of how to share a game I knew it was going to be like PS3.

There's lots of Xbox fanboys in the U.S. even in game journalism. This was an embarrassing display but sadly not surprising. There's no such thing as journalistic integrity. The thing is, why anybody who isn't on the company's payroll would want MS to have success with its current strategy is beyond me.

Even if it was the case I wouldn't really mind so much.  If PS+ membership is the worst thing they force from us then it's still kind of a win.

To be completely honest, neither of Jack's quotes inspire much confidence.

Quote #1: "Well, I mean, we create the platform, we've certainly stated that our first-party games are not going to be doing that, but we welcome publishers and their business models to our platform. There's gonna be free-to-play, there's gonna be every potential business model on there, and again, that's up to their relationship with the consumer, what do they think is going to put them in the best fit. We're not going to dictate that, we're gonna give them a platform to publish on. The DRM decision is going to have to be answered by the third parties, it's not something we're going to control, or dictate, or mandate, or implement."

Obviously this is very badly said if it isn't the case. He clearly makes it sound like publishers can block single player if they want.

Quote #2:
"Similar to PS3, we will not dictate the online used game strategy (the ability to play used games online) of its publishing partners. As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever."

This quote does not clear up the issue. What he would need to say is "We will not allow publishers to block single player, period." What he says is "We will not tell publishers what to do about online passes for used games" and "gamers can sell their discs". This is truly equally vague, and could mean they will let publishers require internet authorization of games if they want for multiplayer or single player.

If these are seriously the only two quotes on the matter, Sony truly needs to come out again and say "No publisher is allowed to block single player on used games or require internet check-ins". Jack's quotes are unnecessarily vague and if they aren't allowing publishers to block used single player or require internet check-ins obviously that is what he should have said.

Seriously those are 2 very badly done quotes by Mr. Tretton. Are there any more recent quotes that absolutely put the matter to rest concerning 3rd parties? I want to see "We are not *allowing* publishers to block single player."

I've read some articles, wish I had saved the links, but they basically were saying over and over, these things will be handled on PS4 the same way they are on PS3 right now. It's not an ideal situation but it's a hell of a lot better than what's going on with Xbox One.
