Topic: Early patch download

I'm not sure if this might have already come up, but I was just wondering if others here feel the same as me in that this should absolutely be a thing.

What I mean by early downloading of patches, is that I think you should be able to download any released patches for a game from the PSN, regardless of whether or not you have a copy of the game. It just occurred to me because I'm going out to finally get the Witcher 3 after work today, and I have downloaded all of the free DLC already, but it would save me so much time if I was able to download the massive patches so that they were already there ready to be installed when I get home.

Seems to me like it would be a sensible step for Sony to try and introduce this. Otherwise it sort of makes the "play as you install" a little redundant if you still need to wait for all the important patches to be downloaded, especially if you're picking a game up a few months after release so have multiple large updates!

From 16/08/15 I’m going for sober for six months to raise money for the Princess Alice Hospice. Donations can be made here and anything you can offer is greatly appreciated: https://www.justgiving.com/Stephen-Butler5

Wish me luck!

@SteveButler2210: Maybe, but I'd prefer them to sort out the terrible download speeds. A big patch (10gb+) is really not a problem if it's downloading as it should be, but the speeds are ridiculously bad and I'm a fairly patient guy.

The last Witcher patch alone was around 7gb so I'd be surprised if you get to start the game tonight if your download speeds are anything like mine on PSN. I'd actually suggest you skip the downloads and just play the base game this evening then download the patches overnight.

@kyleforrester87: Fair point, I'm on a decent wired fibre connection, but granted that doesn't always guarantee a good speed from the PSN. I'm supposed to be going out this evening anyway, so I was planning on just letting it all go overnight and then cracking on in the morning. But if I have time before heading out I will definitely be following your suggestion.

Am I likely to encounter any problems at all in the first hour (2 at the most I imagine) playing with none of the patches installed?

@SteveButler2210: I'm on 50 or 100mb/s virgin (I forget, like it matters!) and generally my downloads are lightening fast. Just PSN, urgh!

As far as Witcher 3 goes, I played from launch on 1.1 so can't actually vouch how it'd run on 1.0 which I suppose yours would be if you didn't go for the 1.7 update. 1.1 was fine enough though, little choppier than the latest version I guess.
