So have a 500 gb ps4 with a hard drive. Have tried evrything to fix it but nothing working so needs to be replaced. Im very strapped for cash and cant get a new one yet but am desperate for some gaming this weekend. Wondering if I could use the one from my ps3 that has a power supply. Yes it is smaller at 320gb but better than nothing right? My main concern is that because I cant turn on the ps3 will putting the hardrive in the ps4 and reinstalling the system in safe mode clear and format the old hard drive or does it need to be wiped first.

It seems you lose nothing in trying, but my guess is to expect that data to take a long walk off a short cliff.

Im not really concerned in losing the data. More wo derimg if I would need to reformat the drive first before putting it in the ps4 or if just by putting it in if it will automatically reformat with the software update

Your PS4 will automatically reformat your HDD. No need to wipe it first
