Hi everyone,

I'm a new dad who only gets to play the playstation occasionally these days. I've always loved shoot em ups but don't like the fact that a lot of them are now geared towards playing online with only a short campaign. Got the latest COD recently and had the campaign finished in about 3 hours which I was really disappointed with.

The online multiplayer thing really isn't my bag so looking for some recommendations of really good shoot em ups with a long ish campaign that will keep my entertained for longer than 3 hours.

Any suggestions?

I am a big fan of the Wolfenstein series. Often on sale as well. Fun story too. Another would be the borderlands series. Most might tell you it's better co-op, but I have always had a blast solo. I also liked sniper elite. Different type of shooter, but fun from ranged for sure.

The new Doom and Wolfenstein games are probably some of the best FPS single player games on console. They will definitely keep you busy.

In addition to Doom and Wolfenstein that got mentioned already, I can't admire enough the Titanfall 2 campaign. Short (5~ hours) but really sweet.
If you are up to more wacky tone, I'll recommend you to try Bulletstorm.
You can buy both of them for few bucks in most sales.
Also the old CoD Modern Warfare 2 campaign is pretty solid.

The best shoot em up campaign of the PS4 generation is easily Wolfenstein The New Order. Which in itself is my favourite since Half Life 2. I’d say avoid The New Colossus though, they really cocked the sequel up. Young Blood and The Old Blood are not all that either.

Doom is brilliant but if you want a story you could probably look elsewhere.

Not a FPS but definitely looks to be a shoot ‘em up, I have a feeling Returnal is going to be a great game when it releases in March. The trailers have me itching to play it.

Resogun is a really good shoot 'em up and somewhat has a campaign. Is good to play in short bursts too. Other then that I am not sure about other shoot 'em ups. Perhaps Jamestown+ but I haven't played that one.

Got to say titanfall 2, great few hours of fun gameplay and playing sections as a giant robot with a voice actor channeling their inner optimus prime is as fun as it sounds. Shout out to wolfenstein new order too, dumb old school fun. Have to say I enjoyed the cod mw2 campaign too, its nowt special but it definitely scratches a band of brothers/saving private Ryan itch. Probs these games will be like £5 each from cex.

Cheers everyone for the recommendations - seems like Titanfall 2 is a winner with most people so I'll give that a bash.

Thanks!

@Tasuki I think OP meant FPS games if you read the original comment!

Titanfall 2 was great, loved the campaign for that as short as it was, looking forward to the sequel, which fingers crossed, eventually gets released.

@nessisonett @kyleforrester87 Actually I just the title. I was kinda wondering why Ttanfall and Doom were being mentioned.

When I hear or this case read Shoot em up I think of games like Gradius, 1942 Defender etc. Titanfall, Doom, CoD would be FPS. I never heard anyone refer to FPS games as shoot em ups.

@Tasuki ahh fair enough lol.

I have heard a lot of people call FPS’s shoot em ups to be honest. Although granted most of them tend to be older non-gamers referring to any type of game with a gun in it.

@Tasuki Hey I meant FPS - I call them shoot em ups, I don't know why maybe it's an age thing

@37denzo No worries. As I said I never heard of a FPS called that before. Maybe it is an age thing, I can see people who grew up with consoles like Xbox or PS or even N64 calling FPS shoot 'em ups especially cause by that time shoot 'em ups like Gradius and such weren't as big unless you went to Arcades and even then.

I was just a bit confused is all.

I used to call FPS games shoot em ups when I was a kid. I don't know why, I guess I just wasn't exposed to actual shootem ups until ikaruga on GameCube. Maybe it's a British thing? They might have used the term in old British magazines or something.

There's also that Clive Owen film called shoot em up which I always thought was named after the misnomer for FPS games due to its subject matter being a bit similar to an FPS game.

@37denzo Im not sure if you are interested in playing or replaying older games but all of the old Doom games and Duke Nukem 3D are on the PS Store and are frequently discounted
