I just bought a replacement drive for my fat 60gb cecha01 ps3 and I have heard about how the ps3's Blu Ray drive circuit board is "married" to the motherboard. But I trashed the original drive, is there anything I can do about this? I have heard of something called "flashing" the drive, will that help?
Hi there is a board underneath the disc drive called a 'daughter board'. This needs to be removed from the old disc drive as it is paired to the motherboard and another disc drive will not work without it I'm afraid.
As far as I know I don't think so. I'm not even sure if you can use it without a drive and just play PSN games, as I think it needs to recognize the blu ray drive to be present.
You can try, but without the board from the blu ray drive they would have to replace the motheboard and the blu ray drive. With the labour on top it would work out cheaper to buy another console.
The bacwards compatibilty comes from the motherboard on the 20GB and the 60GB versions (PS2 compatible). The 80GB uses software emulation (Not PS2 Compatible) . If you console is the 20 or 60GB then yes, but you will still have the drive issue.
I would, you will save yourself alot of hassle in the long run. You can strip the console and sell the parts on ebay. The interiors and case all sell, even the screws. Although the price of consoles is high atm you may wish to wait. These consoles are probably the most sought after due to the PS2 compatibilty. I'm in the UK and CEX sell a decent boxed version for £170. Too high in my opinion, but it's the current price.
