Hello everyone. I have a backwards compatible ps3 that works fine until I load a game and start playing. The fans don’t speed up and it doesn’t seem to run hot but soon after starting a game it turns off and blinks red. It’s able to power right back on. I did put née thermal paste on it as well but problem still happens. Someone please give me some insight

I had the same problem years ago with my PS3 and I was recommended to move it to a place with better air circulation. At that point it was pretty much 50/50 when a game would work and when the system would shut down.

After a year, I found a seemingly permanent solution, which was to reduce the resolution output of the system in the settings. Before I had it on 1080p on the system menu and the thing is that a lot of PS3 games output only at 720p. So for some reason, when the system switches resolution from 1080p to 720p as you're trying to start up a game, it just shuts down. So instead, I'm just playing all my games on 720p because at least the console won't force me to go from 720p up to 1080p when I start a game. Since then my PS3 has never shut down, which is a bloody miracle considering it used to do it quite frequently for an entire year after I discovered the issue.

I don't know if this solution will also help you but at least it's easy to test out. If you decide to test it, I'd be interested to hear how it went.

Thanks for the feedback. I’m currently formatting the hard drive just to put it back to completely “new” I’m trying everything lol. It says it takes 4 hours so I will definitely let you know if it works.
