It's wierd to think that the waiting for Gran Turismo 5 to come out is going to become a thing of the past next week.
When I got my PS3 more than a year ago I had this title in mind and expected it to come out shortly, seeing as though it had already been delayed numerous times. I bought my PS3 despite not being able to get this flagship game with it. Since then I've been playing so many different games, including many different racing games, and I've got to admit i'm slightly worried about GT5.
I was wondering what everybody else thought. It seems to me that Sony is pinning all it's hopes on GT5 this holiday season and I'm not entirely sure it's up to it. It's been delayed so many times, it probably still has issues. You have Forza 3 on the Xbox360 and all these more action packed racers like Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit. Gran Turismo has never really evolved that much, the graphics just get more realistic, more cars and tracks are added etc. Do people still care about Gran Turismo? I personally have bought every numbered game, so it feels kind of wierd that I'm not so up for this one. Maybe it's cos it's been delayed so many times I've given up on it to some extent and moved on.
I'm fairly certain that GT5 will sell extremely well. Even with the delays, hardcore racing fans are certain to get this.
I think one important aspect you might have overlooked is the most important aspect of a racing sim: physics. When it comes to console simulators, nothing can come close to the physics and realism of GT5. I had the privilege of playing a finalized copy of the game at a Sony meet up in Chicago and let me tell you... it is amazing. Each car feels and handles differently from one another making this game one tough cookie to master. As well as the top notch physics, there are just insane amounts of new content and features for it. In features, game-play, and overall quality, Forza 3 (even though it's a good game) isn't comparable.
Another important aspect to note is that it was only officially delayed twice with the second delay a production issue (game was coded for 3.4+ instead of the required 3.5+). Once the game is out and people get their hands on it, I believe that it's going to sell like hot cakes. I was sort of in the same shoes as you with the second delay being announced so close to release date... it was extremely draining on fans and producers alike. The good news is that it will be released Wednesday no matter what and it will be the best racing sim on a console by leaps and bounds.
And yes, I'll be first in line for it Hopefully that weird feeling passes for you and you get a chance to enjoy it. See you on the track!

That's reassuring to hear. I'm not much of a petrol-head (though who doesn't find the idea of driving supercars as appealing?), but I do like the racing, levelling up and collecting of cars. Actually I expect it to be the most realistic racing sim on consoles, but I also I hope the gamey side of it is good too.
Last GT game I bought was the PSP Gran Turismo. I found there to be so much right about that game, namely the obvious things that make a racer good... But the way most of the game is just there, left me under-motivated to keep playing. In fact the rotating garage thing is just annoying.
@Nathan - Can you tell us anything about the career part of the game?

All I know for certain is that it is similar to GT4's where you go through a level of classes to work your way up to the beastly cars. There is also a leveling system, but I'm not quite sure how it works yet. There is A spec and B spec as well giving this a lot more "structure" than previous editions. The copy I played only "allowed" arcade mode so that is really all the information I know for now. If Wednesday comes and you are still on the rocks, let me know and I'll be able to fill you in a lot more.
GT PSP wasn't as well done as it should have been. I agree that it was pretty difficult to play a game without a "career" or "story". It took me a lot of self motivation but I collected all 830+ cars only because they will transfer to arcade mode in GT5. Other than lack of a career mode, GT PSP is an amazing game though.

It has the license for Nascar, WRC, as well as 1000 cars in it. As Nathan said, the physics will definitely be spot of for sure and it will sell like crazy.
Another reason for the delay, is that modded PS3 consoles (USB Hacked) will be forced to update their systems if they want to play the game, and I think that is a smart one on Sony. So if you listened to the GeoMod guy and hacked your PS3, prepare for a nice surprise

Yeah Turtle. Basically Prologue was a demo for GT5 to keep inpatient gamers somewhat happy until GT5 releases. Prologue doesn't even scratch the surface to what GT5 offers.

If there was one game that would convince me to buy a Playstation 3, it would be this game. And within the next few days, it will undoubtedly be my very first purchase game for the PS3. Ever since late 2008, I have been highly anticipating this title more so then any other game I have ever hyped. I have fond memories of the series by Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4 and both were incredibly satisfying entries, the latter of which was easily my favorite PS2 title and one of my absolute favorite game (Matched up with Super Smash Bros. and Super Mario 64).
The delays made for the game have been very frustrating, yet I was still dying in anticipation. I cannot wait for the inevitable when I finally get my hand on the game and see my anticipation fulfilled. It has to be that good.

In my opinion, it is worth the wait! (just needs online tweeking a bit)
Same haha. I'm finished with nearly all the series except for the endurance class and a couple licenses.
Love this game to death though.

gt5 has tons of content but the 800 ps2 cars alone makes it a game I would only recomend to people who wanted to buy it day 1 already, or are able to play essentially a ps2 game beefed up with endless content.
@lipnox.... the game does indeed reuse the 800 cars, with the only noticeable difference being the inability to drive the car in FPS, the game does a great job differentiating the Premium and Standard Cars.
There is so much to offer in Gran Turismo 5 that is leaps and bounds more than any other game on the market. Gran Turismo is and always has been for the "Gear Junkies" that crave a deep simulation experience, and GT5 not only does just that, but also packs so many different modes and race types that GT fans could literally throw hundreds of hours into the game easily. That's not to bad of a deal for $60!
If simulation isn't your thing, Need for Speed Hot Pursuit is insane!

Okay for the life of my I cannot figure out how to race a friend online with this game. Anyone figured this out?
Yeah, go to community and select "lounge" (or maybe my lounge?). Once you are there, your friends can also do that (or you can join their lounge).

Embarrassing. For some reason I thought it sounded like lounge was just random matchups or something. Thanks for the help!
No problem. If you wanna race or free run sometime let me know

Got the game and so far, an excellent experience. Also should have done with slapshot82 done and focus on the single-player mode instead of sucking online with my cars I have. Oh well, these can be improved.
Anyone have the driving force gt wheel for gran turismo 5, mine acts unstable pulling from side to side making me fight to keep the car goin where I want it to go, and if I let go of the wheel it violently jerks back and forth. anyone know of a patch or driver upgrade, please lmk here or @ [email protected]
