Well good news. Anthony has accepted quite a bit of feedback, and he improved it and fixed some bugs. It should be a bit better now

Well, I personally really like the new Nintendo Life design. I think it looks a lot more modern. I do like the design here at Push Square since it's functional and clean, but it is starting to look a little dated to me. I think it could do with a bit of a refresh.

My biggest problem with the new NL redesign is just the layout itself. I don't like that they removed the forum feed from the side and the article layout just looks clutteredand the fact that I cant switch from desktop to mobile view unless I type Nintendolife. com/desktop which is annoying. Iwill be honest, though, I don't spend much time on NL so I may not have just got used to it as soon as others, but overall not a fan of it.

I'm sure I would get used to it but the front page of NL feels like a mess. That said I'm not a big fan of change in general...

@get2sammyb: I don't think the mods are even active on the forums over at NL. There's a thread similar to this, and I believe Ant has responded one or two times, but definitely not frequently. It's difficult to guess what they actually read and consider to implement, and what they don't read.

I still think the old design was a lot better. It's not just one big thing that is gone or has changed, but many small things that make the site less user friendly.

Small things can be easily fixed. The modular nature of the new layout allows to integrate meaningful new features much faster, and it also helps with content discovery, which is both beneficial to readers and our back-end metrics. I really believe that, once we've addressed many of the niggles people have and you all get used to it, you'll really enjoy using the new website.

Push Square, I have two small points of feedback on the Nintendo Life site design.

  • Why are the comments outlined on the right side insted of the usual left? It feels very unnatural that when you read the article, which starts on the left side of the screen, and continue to the comments, you suddenly have to switch to the center of the screen. People love to read in one vertical line, so the sidebar distracts from the content very much. It lessens the readability in my opinion.
  • I don't really understand the colour coding. Red is for video's and orange for reviews and blue for news. That's the part I understand. But why change the colors depending on the page you're on? I probably know I'm reading a review when I'm reading a review, there's no color code needed to remind me of that.
On the other hand when I'm on the front page itself all the different categories have the same color. Reviews are blue, news is blue, etc. So the only moment that I might actually care about the color coding, is the moment that it isn't used.
I also think it distracts from knowing which site you are on. It shatters some of the uniformal feel of a website, which is, basicly, one of the goals of a layout. Even worse is browsing on my cellphone. When I have opened Nintendo Life on my telephone it's pretty hard to switch back and forth between the page and other apps, because Nintendo Life doesn't have a fixed color.
So no offense to the designer, because I like the design for the most part, but the color coding is a pretty useless gimmick (from a design perspective) that only breaks the uniformal feel of the site.

Well, just my two cents. You're free to disagree of course. I like the mobile compatibility of the new site a lot though. So I will probably use Push Square on my phone more often in the new design.

Thanks for responding then. I'm confident I'll stay here no matter what the layout is, but I am very curious to the redesign, though.

Please oh please don't switch to NL's new design. There's a reason why I'm more active here then I am over there...

Tasuki would love all the changes behind the scenes too. I had to relearn everything at N-life

Nintendo Life's design is absolutely AWFUL (trying to keep it polite). It looks so dated and generic!!!! It strikes me as being designed with a mobile and for a mobile rather than a computer first. It also reminds me a bit of MS's tiles too!!!

If I had to pick which site was the better designed, easier to use and easiest to find relevant what you are looking for PushSquare wins hands down!

A pessimist is just an optimist with experience!

Why can't life be like gaming? Why can't I restart from an earlier checkpoint??

Feel free to add me but please send a message so I know where you know me from...
