It’s very possible dirt and grime has made its way in there. This can cause the button to stick, or cause the contact pads/conductors to grime up. The only option you have without opening the controller is too blow in there as hard as you can or use a tin of compressed air and repeatedly press and release the button too see if you can dislodge anything. Another problem can arise when you have been a little robust with the button, usually through rage!!!(we’ve all been there) although uncommon it is possible to damage the conductive film or contacts, but to see this it usually means completely dismantling the controller to have a look at the film. While it’s not rocket science to do this it’s advisable to have an idea of whats inside of a controller, especially delicate ribbon cables. Lots of guides on YT explaining how to dismantle one and clean components with isopropyl alcohol. It could solve your problem.
