Can anyone help me, a mum and novice. My son is only playing fortnite online and yet consuming 7gb in a few hours??
There must be some setting I need to change as Google suggests online ps4 fortnite should use minimal data..

@BonAndHarry Did he just get the game? Because it's possible that statistic includes downloading the game (and it's various patches and updates) before he started playing it.

Games will regularly update themselves, and modern patches can run into the gigabytes, for sure.

@BonAndHarry Hmm, okay... apologies, had to start at the beginning. With all the precautions you've taken, you're right, it shouldn't be using more than 100Mb per hour (according to Epic Games themselves). Chatting whilst playing will add a little more to that, but not 7Gb more.

Are you sure it's all coming from the PS4's usage? Any other devices on your Wi-Fi network?

@RogerRoger I have just gone into notifications and realised that although fortnite has come up and is playable, it is still downloading in the background and 3gb from finishing it's total 30GB!!! The first night it used 16gb, then 7gb yesterday and will be about 10gb today.. the few GB over the 30gb over the last few days would just be our usual daily usage.
So all good, hopefully once done our usage will go back down!
And then of course the game will want an update in a week won't it, hahaha

@BonAndHarry Probably will, yes.

You're wise to deactivate auto-updates if you're concerned about bandwidth, but playing online, live-service games is where you'll encounter the most patches. There's nothing worse than settling down, starting a game and getting a "please wait whilst today's update is installed" slow-moving progress bar.

Just something to be aware of going forward, in case your son is upset he can't play someday. For now, though, glad the mystery has been solved!

@RogerRoger thanks! Yes, he used to get frustrated having to do the constant updates when he was playing it on iPad, so he's used to it. Nature of the beast unfortunately!
Cheers for responding to my post. Much appreciated.
