It's been (just over) six months since the release of Sony's most expensive ever console, the PS5 Pro.
Before the system was released in November of last year, many questioned its existence. There's no doubt that this has been a weird console generation, initially impacted by the covid pandemic and taking a lot of time to really feel like it's offering something new and exciting. Some would argue that it's still lacking that spark, almost five years into the cycle.
The PS5 Pro, then, was aimed squarely at the most hardcore of PlayStation fans — and boy did its price tag back that theory up.
Just three weeks after its launch, we gathered the Push Square editorial team together for a Talking Point article much like this one. Back then, we had rather mixed opinions of the premium machine — but have those opinions changed over the months that followed?
And so here we are, ready to reevaluate the PS5 Pro. Read on for our own thoughts, before hopping into the comments to share yours.
"I'm Just About Satisfied"

Roughly 180 days later, I think I'm just about satisfied with the PS5 Pro. There hasn't been a moment I can point to that single-handedly justifies the console, but a buildup of small but meaningful enhancements has made me appreciate the upgraded system.
y main reason for owning the machine, though, is still the future. When you see how incredible GTA 6 looks in footage captured from a base PS5 in Trailer 2, and how the recent round of previews for Death Stranding 2 were all conducted on Sony's five-year-old box, it's exciting to think of what the PS5 Pro could do to make them look and run even better.
I don't expect GTA 6 to run at 60 frames-per-second on PS5 Pro, but how about a 40fps mode? That's still a step up that'll go a long way for the sort of game that will likely define the next 10 years of gaming. You'll only find those kinds of improvements on PS5 Pro in the console space.
Like I said at the start, I don't think we'll ever see a single upgrade we can all point to that justifies swapping the base PS5 for a PS5 Pro. Instead, it's going to be a lengthy list of neat advances that, by the end of the generation, we'll look back on and appreciate having.

"I Still Find It Difficult to Recommend"

Truth be told, I'm still a bit torn on the PS5 Pro. For me personally, I'm glad I own one because I play a lot of games, both in and out of this job. But I still find it difficult to recommend the system to anyone who asks — especially if they already own a base PS5.
That's pretty much the point, though, isn't it? If you look at the Pro as a premium product first and foremost — a system that's inherently designed for a small percentage of players — then you can start to argue that it's a decent deal. Yes, it is expensive, but six months in, and there are plenty of big games that run noticeably better on the enhanced hardware.
Having said that, I think the Pro is still lacking a killer app — a title that shows even the most casual of onlookers why people would pay for the upgrade. Perhaps that'll arrive in time — it could be just around the corner with something like Ghost of Yotei — but until then, you've got to be satisfied with relative improvements in games like Monster Hunter Wilds or Assassin's Creed Shadows.
So, in summary, I like the PS5 Pro — and not just because it seems to take up way less space under my TV stand. But part of me did think that it'd feel more... essential than it does right now. Again, that could very well change in time, but for anyone who isn't really arsed about extra frames and pixels, you're not missing out on much.

Aye it's awrite 👍
It is what it is - an expensive test bed for the PS6.
Those of you hoping for the next generation console to be revolutionary are going to be disappointed.
Wait for ps6 amirite?
I love my pro paired with an oled tv,it's absolutely fabulous
If i didnt have a PS5 i’d definitely appreciate the options, and would get the PS5 Pro. Everyone always bases it’s value as an upgrade from PS5, but millions of people don’t have a PS5 yet and might appreciate the option of getting a higher tier. But then, i also bought an IPhone 16 Pro, which to some would be an equally ridiculous decision as getting a Ps5 Pro. So yeah, its gonna depend on each persons situation. It did however shot up in value compared to the 2TB series X, for now
I'm loving it. I fired up Rebirth last night for the first time in months and it looks amazing.
I don't bother with 60fps when I have an option to make it look reaaaalllllly pretty, and in that regards it delivers in the games I play.
@soracloud28 or just buy a ps6 as well
@Shepherd_Tallon tlou 2 at nearly 120fps is sublime also
I forgot about its existence.
@lazarus11, I don't notice any differences at 120 fp with Doom Eternal, which is a faster game than The Last of Us 2, it is only noticeable in racing games.
@lazarus11 I never tried it on Pro actually. Maybe I'll replay that next. I've been thinking about it since the show came back.
Ive been really pleased overall, and well worth the upgrade.
In general the improvements are very good to excellent.
You still get the odd 'low effort' enhancement, and a few of the early patches from certain dev teams were questionable, but more and more games are showing that 'night and day' enhancement.
My opinion has always been that the PS5 Pro offers a more significant real world upgrade over the PS5, than the PS4 Pro did over PS4, and over the last few months the gap is widening.
PSSR is much better than some people make out, and makes the biggest difference when the game is in motion - which is a significant % of play time.
I certainly dont think I could go back to playing the base PS5 now (and I have one in my household so the differences are very clear to me).
RE the price - its high, but you get what you pay for, and its an option - you don't have to buy it. Its there if you can afford it, and a decent TV to run it on.
The only irritating thing is all the negative comments you have to read, a lot (not all) of which are clearly disingenuous.
Plus with the PS6 likely further out than people think, im very pleased I upgraded.
Been awesome. Most games hit 60 fps, the stsndard ps5 struggled with 30 fps
@Fritz167 yeah it still exist and look superb at 120fps
@Dragon83 I haven't had one game run at 30fps which is always great
Got mine on launch and don't regret a thing. Its a great console and this year has been very fruitful for it.
I was going to get one but not now the ps6 will be here in a few years might as well wait now I think the test will be whether it cabn run gta 6 at 60 fps or not?
Previous generation I've switched from base PS4 to PS4 Pro the moment it appeared and had a blast.
This time I've planned to do the same trick, but work issues forced me to build a decent PC rig with Ryzen 7 9800X3D and RTX 5080, so this time I'll probably skip the PS5 PRO and get PS6 on start.
Moreover, recent years I feel kinda unimpressed about all the graphic thingies out there. Getting higher FPS / resolution / better textures, etc. is cool, but gameplay is much more important. Maybe getting old and bragging too much, huh
Unlocked frames for First Party Games, and in brand new games like KCD2 has quickly become my favourite way to play, so yes. The more I try, the more it feels the best way to play games and you don't have to sacrifice any quality to get that when devs support it well.
Add in RT and advanced features on top of that, which always enhances the immersion of a game world, then the Pro gives us the best options, the most choices, and the best performance.
I know some people want just one game mode, but having toggles to adjust something to your own tastes is still very nice, and kind of what PC users do anyway.
PSSR already seems less annoying than FSR in most cases too. And even Ubisoft went from being PSSR illiterate to PSSR capable within a couple of months.
A few thoughts: firstly, in terms of a “killer app” for PS5 Pro: devs have to be careful to not alienate and piss off the tens of millions of existing base PS5 players by making a game that’s awesome on Pro but pretty crappy on base. That would also potentially sabotage future generations: why would I buy a PS6 when PS6 will come out a few years later and just be the “proper” console to play games on?
Another thought for me: I would only get a PS5 Pro if my base PS5 died (please don’t), BUT I’m excited that, by all appearances, the Pro upgrades will work on my PS6 when I get one (if the world hasn’t ended by then).
@Ravix
Oh - im all up for the choices.
I only play performance modes but all games should offer at least toggles for: Uncapped 120Hz, motion blur, film grain, depth of field, and any other effect that could potentially mess with image quality.
In addition, unless games are running at approx 80-90fps, and excellent image quality, RT should always be able to be turned off. This way at least I can choose whether I think the RT is worth the sacrifices.
Both the base ps5 and ps5 pro are great consoles but they are seriously let down by the lack of first party titles this generation.
I'm a fan but not even I can deny that this gen has been pretty average in comparison to ps3/ps4 software wise
Bought it day one and have zero regrets. The native improvements to most PS5 games when it comes to dynamic resolution or unlocked framerates is more than worth it, IMO, not to mention the 2TB of storage.
I played Indiana Jones and Clair Obscur on it and they look and run incredibe.
I honestly forget it's a thing until it's brought up in conversation. I just have no interest personally. Perfectly happy with my base PS5.
I'm happy with mine, good boosts for the games I play.
Got my Pro and a 100” QLED TV. It’s a great combination! Worth. Every. Penny!
If I’ve learned anything from this is you have to wait awhile till after something is released to get the final version or true vision. Meaning after a game is done being patched or the pro version of a console releases.
I got a ps5. I will upgrade to the pro if my ps5 breaks down otherwise I'll be waiting and saving for the ps6. It's not an enough improvement to spend that kind of money when my ps5 works fine.
I’m very happy with my Pro. It does what it promised, offer up versions of my PS5 games that look better and run smoother.
Of the games I spent a lot of time playing before and after the Pro my favorite upgrade thus far is GT7’s (which I play in VR).
I love mine personally and it’s given me far better experiences on the whole compared to the base, would I say it’s worth the steep price for most still? Absolutely not, most people don’t even know what resolution and framerate they’re playing at, so it’s not aimed for them, especially at its RRP.
But for anyone who has the display to compliment the Pro and cares about squeezing the most out of your games, it’s been a worthwhile investment and I’m enjoying it so much I’m wondering if I’ll even need to be there day one for the PS6, especially with how Sony are with cross gen support these days.
Best console I've ever owned. The game's quality is just insane and being able to play games like Forza Horizon 5, Stellar Blade, Horizon series, Monster Hunter Wilds and Expedition 33 ... etc on 60+ FPS without sacrificing the quality is awesome.
Pretty happy with mine. Was there at launch and every game I’ve played either looks better or runs better or both. Yes it’s pricey but show me something that isn’t. £700 is 2 weeks food shopping for me these days. 8/10
I don't own one but it is a neat mid-gen refresh. Glad to see a lot of peeps are enjoying it.
It didn't enough to move the needle for me this time around. I got a PS4 Pro when those launched because I felt the leap was higher. This time, not so much.
I've grown jaded with the state of the industry and the simple bells and whistles. I'm not blown away by "just the same but more" iterative sequels companies pump out. So for the games I find myself playing, the base line console is fine.
It didn't help that I'd need an all new TV on top of the cost of the Pro this time around to even see the differences, as my current TV doesn't do 120mhz. Combined, that was too expensive of a pill to swallow. Maybe next time.
@Frmknst It's got zero appeal to me personally, but I'm gonna hedge my bets on "because they wanted it".
Happy with my standard PS5. I think it's okay if you can afford the Pro but my issue with these little incremental midgen refreshes is - it doesn't make us really appreciate any advancements when you enter a next gen. Now people have to rely on tech analysis to determine benefits or upgrades. Anybody could tell the jump from PS1 to PS2 to PS3. From PS4 it started slowing down, ironically we started getting midgen upgrades with the PS4Pro. Can't we all just get along and agree to have true gen upgrades and not these mids, but hey there's always a market for those so...And oh forget GTA6 being super optimized for Pro, they'd save their best for PS6 so people can double dip.
Really Awesome had it since launch
Love mine and despite the price I’m glad I bit the bullet.
Genuinely an overpriced underdelivering letdown. The choice to not upgrade the cpu (which they did with the cheaper upgrade price of the ps4 pro), means the Ps5 pro Can never really deliver much more performance in most games. Instead slightly better image quality will be the norm. For 700 $ or more that's just not appealing to anyone aside from those with nothing else going on that they could better use their money for.
However here's the even greater issue. Sony just has nothing in the immediate pipeline aside from yotei, which is absolutely going to only look slightly better than it's ps4 predecessor. By the time the final slate of over bloated budget, iterative AAA thing comes from the rest of their Studios, it will be a cross Gen situation, making the damn thing even less of a wise investment rather than just waiting for the 6.
There will be those incapable of reflection and defend its value with nonsense for fear of admitting buyers remorse, however it's quite clear it was just another In a long line of Sony cashing in via hardware releases to pad their bottom line during a generation they wasted chasing unicorns.
I don't own one and have no interest in owning one. For some context, I've owned every Playstation and 'multiple' each generation. Last gen I had a PS4 and then bought the PS4 Pro, the Gen before that I had a the OG PS3 60GB Phat until that got YLOD and so bought a PS4 Slim. I also had a 360, 360 Elite, XB1 VCR, XB1S, XB1X and now a Series X.
So why not a PS5 Pro - well to me, it just isn't worth the extremely 'minor' improvements for the Cost, the lack of a built in Disc Drive and doesn't offer anything that my PS5 doesn't - a slightly sharper, slightly higher visual quality and/or slightly better performance isn't going to make me spend more than £500 on a 'Console' that still requires a Subscription to play ALL my games and all the content I bought.
Id rather spend the money of a PS5 Pro and the next 3-4 yrs of PS+ on a PC or PC upgrade that would offer more tangible gaming benefits...
Had it day 1 & paid £400 for it due to getting £300 for my previous PS5.
The improved power & storage is great. Having great visuals with a similar frame rate or higher in a few of the games I play is great but I bought it more for the next few years of UE titles & GTA6.
I'm not chasing 4K though, I use a 240hz 1440p OLED monitor.
The biggest issue I have with the Pro is the slight increase to noise. It's not a big difference but it's audible unlike my base PS5 presumably due to a smaller heat sink.
@Frmknst They let you comment and you wasted it!
Disc-Drive not included with/in the console = No Purchase.
If you don't have a ps5. A ps5 pro is a way to go.word up son
Thanks for the article and video. It's only been six months? Wild.
I went from hyped about the possibility to laughing off the console as not for me to suddenly last week picking it up in a spur of the moment to now just itching to join the conversation.
The price: I still think it is overpriced, but I am going to sell my PS5 on the used market, and I got the PS5 Pro with an absolute insane discount. Easily the lowest pricepoint I have seen ever for that thing. So, the base PS5 digital edition retail price is £429.99 and I want at least £329.99 for my PS5, so that I'll end up with a PS5 Pro (and overall bill for this generation) for £200. When I sell it, I might even profit overall as I can sell the pro for more than I gave.
About my TV: I found out my budget TV could do 120 Hz and HDR, where I thought it was locked to 60 Hz. Sadly, it is not OLED, VRR, but at the third of the price I can live with it. Until I trade it in trying to roughly get what I paid for it (heavily discounted) to buy an LG C3/4 at a hefty discount as well.
Performance: I think the Pro is worth it, but I don't think a regular gamer need to feel like they NEED it. I bought the Pro to enjoy a bit of extra juice and because I saw an insane deal I had to take. Now, I am free of FOMO and are experiencing the best that console gaming can offer.
I bought one last Tuesday and a new OLED TV. Just played the last of us part 1 again and it looks and plays phenomenal. Best I have ever played it.
Need some more games to try out. Any recommendations?
@lazarus11, I have Doom Eternal at 120 fps with basic PS5 and I know I don't lose anything.
@Joshua2255, try God of War Ragnarok, Horizon games, Metro Exodus, Ghost of Tsushima, Stray (great light effects), Red Dead Redemption 2...
@EfYI Don't think you'll get £329 for a second hand PS5 Digital Edition. A quick look on ebay would confirm this I suspect.
Removed - unconstructive
It's fine. AC shadows and rebirth definitely feelbetter but can't say I've noticed much of a difference on anything else which is why I've been going more PC and currently buying parts to build a real good one as console gaming is so meh now
Intrested to see how death Stranding 2 is on pro as that will be a day one for me
@Rich33 ps4 pro and one x felt like a much bigger step up than what The ps5 pro feels like
@Fritz167 I have completed Ghost of Tsushima a couple of years ago. Is it worth playing again on the pro? Might as well do a play through if it's worth it before October.
God of War Ragnarok I have in my collection but not played yet.
I did boot Cyberpunk and noticed it looks much better but I have a new TV so I think that helped as well.
For me its fine. I use it mostly through my portal, but occasionally on the oled its attached to. Really its just a ps5 with a dash of shiny and a better wifi adapter. Main reason im ok with it though is that it looks nicer than the ps5. Superficial, yes, but important none the less.
Would I recommend it to anyone else? If your framerate sensitive maybe (Im not), or perhaps if your like me and just like better numbers and a cleaner looking system. Otherwise, probably not.
The price got me thinking the PS6 would be about the same price. So I'm glad I invested on a PC.
With PC I won't have to worry about future games not coming to PC, like when the dlc for final fantasy 7 remake was exclusive to PS5 and I had the game on PS4, I didn't get the DLC on PS4. So stuff like that won't happen on PC.
I love my Pro. Initially, the thing that pushed me over the edge to pre-order it was that it would let my partner and I play BG3 split-screen at 60fps. This may sound like a small thing but we were putting serious time into BG3. It transformed the experience for us and made an amazing game that much more enjoyable.
Outside of BG3, I’ve really enjoyed the game improvements that have been made possible by the Pro. They’ve been great but very few (if any) of them felt truly transformational…until I played AC: Shadows. It is absolutely beautiful when running in balance mode at an unlocked 40fps with extended RT enabled. It is a great example of what the Pro is capable of just six months after release and bodes well for what we might see in the near future. I can’t wait!
It’s ok and has done some good stuff.
Best one for me is AC shadows when the PSSR update, removed the shimmer and pixel crawl when panning so definitely looks better.
FH5 is great as well on Pro.
So some good implementation but not as much as I thought or good as it was gonna be.
There are still compromises.
Gotta have good TV, otherwise its pretty pointless so far.
I have to say im honestly surprised by the ammount of PRO enhanced games tho, i didnt expect this many.
All in all, im not regretting my buy, but its definetly not must-have.
@stu123 AC: Shadows has RTGI in quality mode on both the base PS5 and Pro…the only difference is the Pro has it across all modes. The standout feature on the Pro is RT reflections/specular in both quality and balance (since patch 1.0.2) modes.
Haven't bought one yet but I will at some point this year ready for GTA 6. From what I've heard people say about it and from what I've seen on YouTube it's a beast and makes some great improvements. Luckily I don't base my purchases off comments on here as I'd be missing out on a lot of great stuff 😂.
Dont have one, don't need one. We still get PS4 games. Can we focus on ps5 games, please?
@Dragon83 that's definitely cap the PS5 doesn't struggle with any game running 30 fps that's why they have performance and quality mode options
hello.
I have a PS5pro bought after launch.
I paid for it a bit less than the suggested retail price on Amazon.
I live in Italy.
I'm satisfied by the console however I think the price is a bit too high, in my opinion.
I know, considering the recent trend, it is only going to rise, still it is not optimal.
I buy digital games since the end of the Xbox360 era when this option was made available, so I don't mind the lack of optical disk, although I'm aware this decision really hurts some players.
I didn't not expect a more powerful console of what it is, just a little cheaper.
I really appreciate the 2TB SSD.
please keep in mind it is more noisy than the Xbox Series X as the base PS5 model already is.
if videogaming is your primary or only hobby, and you have te resources, I suggest to invest on the PS5pro because at the moment it is the most powerful console on the market, plus MS is bringing its entire catalogue on Sony hardware.
if you are a PC gamer than is another thing.
@Joshua2255
Basically anything Sony but I think HorizonFW, Spiderman 2, and GT had the better increases if memory serves. GoW Ragnarok was also good - and if you haven't played it, its a really good game.
I thought Hogwarts Legacy was a really big improvement - but ONLY in my opinion in its (normal, not HFR) Performance mode, using the uncapped framerate toggle.
Stellar blade and RE4r also had major improvements, but you need a 120hz capable TV to benefit the most RE4r had over 1.5x the framerate. I think RE Village benefited well too.
Newer games - KCD2 had a very good showing, as did Assassins Creed Shadows, and Forza 5.
This isn't exhaustive either, and there are a few gems to be found where just the boost to non pro enhanced games can be pretty major, particularly if the game struggles to lock to 60fps on base, or has agressive dynamic resolution - maybe Robocop (im not sure).
Day 1 and it's great. Love it and the improvements it offers. Can't wait to play Ghost of Yotei and GTA 6. It's far better than the series X. Though the base PS5 was better than the series x as well. Think the next xbox will be my last MS console.
@Joshua2255 better wait for Ghost of Yotei.
Excellent.
It wasn’t for everyone, yet people still purchased it and complained, typical.
As someone who did want one, it does everything it said it would and more.
@MFTWrecks the Leap from 5-5PRO is much more substantial I’d say. The only leap on 4-4pro was checkerboarding and stable 30fps. Also let’s not dismiss the fact that PSSR will be upgraded with FSR4, early next year I believe or could be sooner. So even more improvements coming.
Can't really see much difference tbh with you.
@PlatinumMikey I know, but as I said, I don't really play games that would really push that all that much, I don't think. AND I'd need an all new TV to see any of it at all (I upgraded to my current TV when I got the 4 Pro, as it so happens). So it's not just the cost (and hassle) of trading/selling the current console, I'd also have to add on the expense of a solid TV that pushes it out of the realm of feasible for me.
@MFTWrecks that’s fair enough then. I’m no tech expert but I can definitely see big improvements from base however. I base that on my Mrs having the base PS5 and being able to walk into the other lounge and see our games running (very nearly) side by side. yes I sold my base 5 and got £240 sheets off the PROs cost. And I have a 2022 LG lcd 👍. I’m waiting for PS6 to upgrade that. lol
Edit: all the “bases” covered there 😁
@Frmknst
If only you could read, you'd find out🤑
I remember the feeling of going from SNES to PS1 then N64,PS2 and PS3. They all felt like huge and worthwhile upgrades.
Getting a pro console just makes the next generation consoles jump in graphics even more mediocre than it already is these days.
@Discol76
Remember I come from a different market - I am constantly converting currencies to explain somewhat my situation. If Playstation raises the price of the console in my country, I could get even more. I am in no rush, I have a 'for sale'-sign and maybe someone will eventually bite, otherwise I lower the price incrementally.
I actually just bought one last week lol.
I think it's a nice product, the most powerful console this gen and likely for the rest of this gen. It's also a product of our times, by that I mean it isn't going to blow you away with better graphics, but it does take the PS5's already great capabilities and make it that much more capable so better frame rates are standard as well as more genuine 4K gaming ability.
I wouldn't call it a must-have for it's price, but I think it serves a purpose for someone like me who wanted something better without investing in a serious gaming PC.
Very satisfied. Ive bought another so myself and my wife can both play on pro at the same time 😀
It was touted as having improved RT and yet Devs aren't utilizing it.
It's still the same stuff, 4K 30fps or 1440p at 60fps.
If you want RT, you're stuck with the quality mode with 30fps in most games. There are nice exceptions like first party games like Ratchet and Clank.
RT makes a much bigger difference in fidelity than resolution does. I'd pick 60FPS with RT over 4K every time regardless of what res the game ran at.
@Titntin nice one! I’m thinking the same. it’s her birthday just before GTA drops
@EfYI Ah apologies. I assumed it was UK prices.
Gamestop offered $320 store credit for my base launch ps5 disc. Wanted to put it towards a ps5pro. Even with the trade-in I'm looking at upwards of $450+(ps5pro w/disc drive). Im good on the extra frames. And if gta vi is mainly dependant on the cpu, then the pro won't matter one lick.
I think it was great at launch and has only gotten better since. It's very underrated and I just don't get the negative comments people make. I think some of us radically weigh the same things differently.
I mostly play on Switch OLED handheld and some docked. From my viewing distance, the base PS5 looks great already, so I don't see the need for the Pro. I am also one of those people that doesn't really mind 30 vs 60 FPS, for whatever reason (maybe it's genetic) : I usually go for graphics mode if given a choice.
For people who "wait" for PS6, why not wait for 7, 8, 9...?
Whole concept seems like a cope
I absolutely love it. Not having to choose anymore between fps and graphics/ray tracing is the game changer. TLOU Part 1 almost had me drooling. The huge internal space is a benefit as well, although I mainly only install the games I want to play (next).
@Kelrics90 But they are using it. AC Shadows for instance has RTGI at 60fps on Pro with RT Reflections added when played on Quality and Balanced mode. Spidey 2 has added RT as well as does Alan Wake 2. Forza Horizon 5 also has RT in Quality mode when playing something even SX doesn't have.
End of the day RT is expensive even on Pro.
I was thinking of getting one, but then I realised my TV doesn’t support 120hz/40fps, so there wouldn’t be much point would there? 🤔
@Fritz167 well you lose the majority of games looking and playing the best they can on the pro , there's one thing
If I didn’t have a PC I’d appreciate it more but I definitely regret getting the pro seeing as Gran Turismo 7 is the only thing I can’t play on my PC in DLAA above 4k maxed out. Oh Astro Bot too but I’ve totally finished that game.
Yeah I am really happy with mine, still a bit miffed it didn't come with a drive but it is a great bit of kit and worth every penny to me!
I got through the last gen on an original fat PS4 and never felt like I missed out, and that tempered any thought of swapping to a ps5 pro. I genuinely couldn't and still cannot see any benefit to it. Because as it runs now, with my needs and entertainment setup it's just fine. The only good upgrade would be to shrink the ps5 to an acceptable footprint and make it look less like the unholy spawn of a Dubai skyscraper and BT router....
Base ps5 has frequent deals, so with that, the pro usually costs x2 or even more, and it feels too expensive considering the actual value it provides. So for me it comes down to that. I'll pick one when / if the price drops.
I think it isn't worth the money for most people. That said I got mine when I had some spare cash and I love it.
Never bought "PS5" or "PS5 Pro" for the obvious reasons.
Waiting for PS6 announcement around the corner.
after i saw every exclusive game was ported to pc, i don’t see the point in owning a new sony console.
I got a Pro in March for 10% discount, having eventually sourced the disk player at RRP (which Sony then dropped by £20 the next month). I’ve been pretty underwhelmed by the upgraded games so far. I’m remember seeing the videos in the Mark Cerny promo and Hogwarts Legacy particularly looking great with RT. Cerny made one central promise in that, which was that Pro owners wouldn’t need to compromise in choosing fidelity or performance. With Pro they could have both. That simply isn’t the case with games like Hogwarts which was showcased. The fidelity modes run very choppy. Same with Spider-man 2. TLOU part 2, I do feel I can see a quality boost with Performance but it’s a rare example. The prospect of new compression techniques being enabled, and that newer games will be better able to use its power leads me to fully reserve judgement, but the Pro feels like a future investment than a ticket to improved gaming now. Death Stranding 2 and GTA 6 are the big test. I don’t regret it in the way I do with PSVR2 which was a blatant stitch up. I contrast it with my feelings on the Portal which has completely surpassed by expectations (although led to spending far too much time playing Balatro in bed).
I like it. It's nothing ground breaking but it's just nice to play with the fewest compromises on console. As an enthusiast that's all I want.
In general all tech is suffering from one thing lacking- the audience. Our eyes and ears aren’t strong enough to appreciate advancements, our lives are too dull to take advantage of all the extra QOL features, and our wallets are too empty to afford the things.
My main issue with pro is that I already have OG ps5 with BR disc drive and I'm satisfied with it and surprisingly don't feel any fomo this time around. I'd only buy pro if my OG suddenly dies, but I hope it'll live until ps6 will launch. However I'm happy for those who picked up pro and are OK with the purchase, good for them.
@liathach
The main improvements to the games you note are in the 'Performance mode' ie in trying to make the Pro performance modes match the visuals of base PS5 quality modes more closely, just at the higher fps of a performance mode; or raise the fps of the performance mode on Pro (eg RE4r which improved the visuals of its performance mode slightly, but allowed the game to run when uncapped up to approx 100fps).
I never knew why they added the RT mode to hogwarts - the best improvements were to the Performance mode (not the HFR mode by the way). SM2 was the same - they may have added a few bells and whistles to the quality mode, but the main goal was making the performance mode look (and run) better.
Waste of money, waste of mid gen efforts to both the company looking for that extra income and the customer who made the foolish decision to purchase for what I might consider insignificant boost to games.
The positives is that I saved almost 600 and made better use of it
@lazarus11 I had PS4 and PS4 PRO, I can imagine the differences. And on PS5 they are lower ones at a higher price.
@Fritz167 i had a ps4 pro also, the ps5 pro has had more support now than the ps4 pro had in its lifetime , with a vrr capable display the differences are quite noticeable, double the fps and some times even triple , the ps5 pro offers the best place to play games, its a superb machine , i like the best , im sure you can imagine what that might be like.
@Dynamq nothing is a waste of money if you enjoy what you spend it on , it's ridiculous to me that some people get so angry and annoyed, with what others spend their money on,they ridicule their purchase , call them foolish and stupid, I just see it as jealousy, life's to short to be so petty , just my opinion you understand.
@liathach why do you feel the psvr2 was a stitch up , granted it hasn't had hardly any support from Sony themselves , but new games get released every month , I don't see the problem.
@UltimateOtaku91 ignore the people who don't even own one to offer an opinion, is it a life changing experience not at all, but if you're gamer it offers the best way to play games, if you can afford one,why the hell not 😁
Don’t have one and still no interest.
My wife and I bought a PS4 pro the moment they came out. We just moved our older PS4 up into the spare room. It was a no brainer at the time. We just used the PS4 so much.
I was astounded to find out I've had my PS5 for nearly five years recently. Again we bought it very early, as soon as we could get hold of one, but in five years I don't think we've had the opportunity to use it anywhere near as much. It's just not been supported with quality games and those games that do exist have almost always been tuned downwards to support previous gen machines. My 5-year-old PlayStation 5 and my 5-year-old PC a perfectly capable of running the games I want to play.
And I'm not specifically blaming Sony -.we don't even consider an Xbox anymore.
Realistically games developers haven't done enough this generation to make me want to invest further. I may feel different when GTA 6 is released.
@neillaw "For people who "wait" for PS6, why not wait for 7, 8, 9...?
Whole concept seems like a cope"
Huge false equivalence. Not having a PS5 Pro doesn't prevent me from playing PS5 games.
Not having a PS6, PS7 or PS8 will prevent me playing games released for those platforms.
@RS1 The PS4 game sales would like a word lol
@neillaw And.....what word would that be? I'm sorry but your comments don't make sense.
@RS1 I was starting to write out a comprehensive reply but just felt you wouldn't want to listen due to re-reading your comment so won't bother to explain
Carry on lol
Last gen I went day1 with the Pro update. It would have been pointless, except there was that 4K tv to consider, so in the end it made a lot of sense. Then I got an xb1x and 4Pro looked like an old sock. Played RDR2 on xb1x in glorious native 4K.
That taught me a lesson: let others fill Sony's pockets with that mid generation "update", I will wait for their next new gen console.
don't know anyone with it
Wasn't interested in one , won't get one , it doesn't justify the extra cost over standard version
My opinion and I've no interest in being told why you think I'm wrong, your opinion is completely irrelevant to me
Thanks 😊
@PlatinumMikey
I love my Pro as well, but are you seriously spending £350 a week on food shopping??? You could have a family takeaway/restaurant meal every night for that much!
@ecurb7 If you think you can feed 4 people at a restaurant in England on £350 a week you obvs don’t a have a family to feed.
I have a family of 4 myself! Not Michelin star, obviously, but a Nando's or Pizza Hut, you can just about do £50-ish. But still, what are you buying for home eating that costs £50 a day?
No internal disc drive? Check.
Can't stand on it's own? Check.
Won't buy it? Also check.
@Rich33 PS6 is most definitely out further than people think, I wouldn't put past it being holiday 2029 or later!
@neillaw
My guess is Nov 2028 - ie 4yrs from Pro, but unless there is a big surprise (eg its heavily underpowered or very expensive comparative to PS5) I would say that 2029 is more likely than 2027.
