Resident Evil has a storied history with mini games, from the Tofu mode of Resident Evil 2 on PS1 right the way through to the fan-favourite Mercenaries add-on that's shipped with multiple instalments.
Almost every mainline title is treated to its own spin-off from the main game, and now Resident Evil Requiem has one: a free PS5 update adds the flamboyantly named Leon Must Die Forever.
This is a time attack mode where Leon pursues Victor Gideon through a number of locations from the campaign. You begin on the streets of Wrenwood, and then have limited choice over the route you take to the final encounter. Using doors dotted around each area, you can progress to different sections of the Rhodes Hill care centre and Raccoon City, or take on a boss fight. Each place has a recommended level, from level 1 to level 20, so the idea is to gradually power Leon up as you make your way towards Victor Gideon at the end.

The zombies become more dangerous the further in you go, and when you either die or run out of time, the run is over and you're issued a score and rank. It has a roguelite element to it where you'll always begin the mode back at the start, but completing challenges rewards you with a currency that unlocks new items and weapons.
Therefore, the more you play it, the better you should get.
Levelling up in Leon Must Die Forever is done through the Blood Collector: you kill enemies and their deaths translate into points. Once you earn 100 points, you can unlock an Enhancer. These abilities apply to your current run, and offer perks like improved damage, health recovery, weapon repair, and more. Some supply considerable bonuses like filling up the Blood Collector 40% faster, but the trade-off is you lose 20% of your attack power.
Getting the balance right and selecting the correct Enhancers to improve your current loadout is pivotal to making good progress. The enemies hit hard in Leon Must Die Forever and their own health bars are no joke — you can very easily be overwhelmed and have your run ended, especially as it begins to throw in multiple Blister Heads at once.
The roguelite nature of the mode only goes so far, however. While you do have to go back from the beginning upon each death, what awaits seems to be the same every time. There's no randomness to enemy spawns; you come up against the same zombies in the exact same scenarios and situations. Those elements appear to be set in stone, and the only randomness comes from the guns you'll have at the time.
Further, the portions of the game that Leon Must Die Forever has adapted for the mode aren't really any different. On the streets of Wrenwood, Leon uses the same dialogue as the campaign. In this example, it actually makes sense because the protagonist is going after Victor Gideon in that scene in the single player.
However, during the sections taken from the Rhodes Hill care centre, Leon keeps muttering about needing to reach the office upstairs. That's not the objective of the mode, so the dialogue feels out of place. You can unlock more dialogue for Leon by spending the currency earned from Challenges, but even after activating it, we were still treated to the same repeated voicelines from the campaign.
It's a strange approach that lays bare how the mode is just locations from the main game stitched together. With simple black screens the only things that transition you from one place to the next, Leon Must Die Forever comes across a bit rushed. The only entirely new elements are spiders you can shoot to increase your time limit, and blue and red zombies that need to be either parried or defeated with melee moves.
However, at the end of the day, it's impossible to ignore the fact this is a free update. If you loved Leon's action from the base game, then Leon Must Die Forever is a fantastic way to get a quick hit of it. You're thrown straight into the action and forced to level up your build — or die. It's truly intense, and the combat of Resident Evil Requiem is provided another platform to shine.
It's unlikely to hold your attention for very long, there are no new Trophies to earn, and the unlocks don't carry over to the main game — this is a very self-contained mode, all in all. Leon Must Die Forever is not your Mercenaries replacement, but if you need another way to blast zombies, it'll serve you nicely. This is still Resident Evil Requiem combat, and that's still a great thing a few months removed from release.

I mean, I already went through the campaign 3 times and snagged the platinum, so I will probably try this out since I have yet to uninstall the game.
I would have loved a few new trophies. Not the end of the world though. I was quickly reminded how dang good it looks on the Pro.
I'm playing it right now, and for a free DLC I can't complain too much, obvs could be better but that's going to come with the actual DLC later on.
I'm normally not a massive player of these side modes in games of this type.
However, I do wholeheartedly agree with the "its free, so no harm done" sub headline.
From the opposite view, as some would consider things like this a waste of dev time which they could have spent on DLC, its probably good its limited in scope.
RER is a really amazing game as it is for those who aren't interested, for those that are - enjoy!
Sure its free, so hard to complain. But it feels like a lazy, quickly put together add on to retain player numbers until the substantial dlc comes out. I played it once, won't be going back to it. Especially just for ***** looking head ornaments I dont want to use because im not 12.
I finished last night; fun game. Looking forward to the dlc. I'm not into rougelikes so il pass on this but good to see adding new stuff for people that do
@Rich33 Judging from I wouldn't say this"wasted" much dev time, this is something they probably put their C team on while they focus on other things.
Waiting for the story DLC, day 1 on that. Skipping this
@Oram77
I would agree.
Thats why I say its probably better to be limited in scope - better than using up a lot of key dev time, but the downside is it can't be expected to be a complete experience some might want.
A good middle ground as you can't please everyone!
It's a shame it's not a more fleshed out Mercenaries-style mode.
Requiem is my favourite game this year and one of my favourite entries in the series but this was disappointing. It's a shame they couldn't even just restore some cut locations to give us new environments to fight in but as is, I'd much rather just replay the game again.
I'll just wait for the story dlc to jump back in
I honestly miss raid mode from Revelations games. I enjoyed it more than Mercenaries.
No, you don't understand. Capcom coverage is an echo chamber. Any and all press that isn't overwhelmingly positive gets you sent to the gulags.
That's a bit disappointing. It's free at least, I'll give it a go once the story dlc launches
Yeah, I figured whatever they did for the arcade mode would be extremely lazy. Resident Evil and to a lesser extent Monster Hunter are movie games now. They're ***** movies, but it is what it is.
@kungfumongoose you didn't find it hard to complain at all 😆
Should have just done mercenaries, I was looking for a reason to reinstall the game and was hoping this would be it. I’ll hold out until the DLC.
This looks like something that scratches the, "Man, that Leon combat is fun. I'd like to do just that without the Grace section" itch. I'm going to give this a go in the next 40 minutes or so. Really looking forward to it.
@Dalamar Same, although I didn't dedicate massive amount of time to them they were an awesome way to reuse content in an engaging way.
I played it once and that was enough. It's lazy and slapdash and not a patch on Mercenaries. The game has very little replay value as is, so it's a shame to see that this is all they've added in, when the likes of Village and 4 Remake have fantastic extra modes.
@Frmknst I'm honestly not giving you crap, but I'm curious.
Do really even enjoy games that aren't extraction shooters?
Kudos if you're giving other games a try
Everyone has their favorite genre, but it seems like you hate most games that aren't built around the Escape from Tarkov model
Honestly don't know why they bother with these modes as no wants them if they aren't Mercenaries or Raid.
@Dalamar Its the best bonus mode they ever made. Its crazy they never brought it back since RER2.
@Frmknst dude did you casually ignore how a significant majority of games sold are sold digitally these days? So the vast majority of the five million people who bought it "still has the game".
Capcom dosent seem to really listen to what their player base wants. Instead they release the exact opposite. Granted this update is free, but Ethan Must Die was panned, Mercs and Raid mode praised, yet they went the Must Die route. People want a modern take on Outbreak, but instead they gave us that weird Dead by Daylight knock off with RE3R. Nobody wants PVP Resident Evil, yet they give us RE:Verse and Umbrella Corps.
The money is right there for the taking.
"There's no randomness to enemy spawns; you come up against the same zombies in the exact same scenarios and situations. Those elements appear to be set in stone, and the only randomness comes from the guns you'll have at the time."
There is randomness to em. I streamed for an hour and outside of the first area, the rest of them do have randomness.
Like the Care Center, the exit for example can have nothing, or a bunch of regulars, or even if ur unlucky the 2 screamers (with the blue and red aura). The big chef can be somewhere random. Same with the 2 screamers.
I saw enough to mix it up that I wasn't sure if I was gonna have an easy first few rooms or just open an early door and have billy boy sitting their licking his lips ready to carve me like a turkey.
OK for something easily and obviously thrown together in a pinch, but I'm waiting on the real DLC. Hopefully something with Claire Redfield. Revisiting Raccoon City is pretty meaningful, so it's funny to bring back Sherry of all people, but not the actual second MC.
I put tons of hours into Resident Evil Revelations 2's Raid mode. Wish they had just stuck with that.
