Two weeks ago there was a ton of chatter about Sony’s overemphasis on blockbusters, but to be honest the platform holder has put the media in its place. A round of superlative previews for offbeat sci-fi roguelite Returnal has elevated the status of that release to astronomical levels, and now a Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart trailer has gamers’ jaws agape.
In fact, that trailer has attracted 1.1 million views in little over 24 hours on YouTube, and is currently the 14th top trending video on the website as we write this. These are enormous metrics for the series, which has always been popular but never belonged to that upper-echelon of mainstream PlayStation franchises.
It’s worth remembering that, at the time of its release, Ratchet & Clank’s reboot on PS4 was Insomniac Games’ fastest-selling title of all time. It was quickly surpassed by Marvel’s Spider-Man, of course, but it feels like Rift Apart is certainly well-placed to become the best-selling entry in the series so far – only its price point can potentially hold it back at this stage.
We have to say, the PS5’s launch window lineup has been excellent so far. Between the likes of Demon’s Souls, Sackboy: A Big Adventure, Returnal, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, there’s been a ton of variety and some really high quality stuff. The exciting thing is that we’ve barely seen anything of the impending sequels like Horizon Forbidden West and God of War Ragnarok.
Many have criticised the company’s PR strategy of late, but PlayStation Studios seems to be firing on all cylinders as this generation gets underway. We can’t wait for this week’s State of Play…

@velio84 Hehe.
Me too.
Me 3 word up son
Random fact correct me if I’m wrong
Insomniac Games has managed to release 2 Rachet & Clanks (one for PS4 & PS5) and 2 complete Spider-Man games before 343 has released a single new Halo (still no release date for Infinite)
@2cents That's why Insomniac are my favourite developers! They release games frequently, and gorgeous games as well!
@2cents I know it's a different game but technically Halo Wars 2 was a new Halo developed by 343 and that came out in 2017
@Voltan totally forgot about Halo Wars 2 good catch! Wasn’t half bad either
@Jackpaza0508 Insomniac is slowly turning into my new favorite developer over Naughty Dog
@2cents From all of Sony's studios they are the top dogs for me at least. Everything they put out is very high quality and they also have great range in their games, they don't just put out the same kind of game. I hope we get to see Resistance make a comeback after Rift Apart 🤞
The difference between the first year of PS4 and PS5 on the first party front is night and day and it's largely thanks to Insomniac, which is right up there with RGG at the moment as my favorite studios in the business.
But websites and influencers told me that Gamepass won the console war despite not being a console. For sure views are copies sold but at least they shows interest.
I can see why. The trailer's visuals and slick dimension hopping are so good, I had to watch five times before I even noticed the new weapons.
This is truly the first next gen game for me. Demon souls was awesome but it was a remake and I still some suspicions of Returnal, but this looks absolutely glorious
Buying Insomniac is hands down one of the best moves Playstation has made in years.
@2cents
That’s because, well err, god only knows what Microsoft and their studios do.
They definitely don’t seem to be managed that well and Nintendo are not much better lately.
Just compare the overall release games for PS5 compared to series x.
Also with Returnal, then Ratchet and Clank, May and June. And hopefully HZD 2 later this year.
The companies games wise are a mile apart.
But you can get game pass and play a load of old games. And have 120fps upgrades, waste of time. No thanks give new AAA in house studio games any day of the week.
This why world wide there is already a 2:1 gap being created in console sales.
At it will grow as more stock arrives and the years go on.
The only reason I like Microsoft in the games market, it keeps Sony alert and looking over their shoulder.
@2cents They also managed to release Song of the Deep, Edge of Nowhere, The Unspoken, Feral Rites, Seeding, Stormland, Strangelets.
@Voltan 343 wasn't even the main developer for that game. It was Creative Assembly.
Who want days gone 2 http://chng.it/T4YcSWqTTJ
I already watched it a couple of time but I'm still laughing at that "shuush" scene lol, also nefarius voice is hilarious
PlayStation/Sony always do things in their own sweet time. Just stay the course and continue as planned.
Respect.
Imagine if in the first hour or so, Rivet beats Ratchet to death with a wrench because Ultimate Supreme Executive Chairman Drek was actually Rivit’s Father (adopted) and he was actually a good guy - not the planet destroying villain we all thought.
Then you spend the rest of the game alternating between Rivit and Clank until they eventually come face to face in a epic final battle... but they decide to be friends, because.
Is over a million views really that unusual? The PlayStation channel has over 13mil subs. Also R&C is pretty well known, no? I dunno I'm not much of a YT expert!
@Dezzy70 "play a load of old games. And have 120fps upgrades"
I want those for Playstation too though, why does it have to be one or the other?
This really does look next gen, Returnal looks amazing. But Ratchet takes it to a whole new level. Imagine PS5 games in a few years!!
@Juanalf
Would be nice maybe, but I would rather developer resource and costs and time focus on new games for a new generation, that’s what I pay the £450 for. That’s why I have a PS5 for, Sony and their team seem to be bringing the games for a new generation.
Not backwards compatibility old games and tarted up FPS 120 old games.
@Juanalf Sony just doesn't have the infrastructure or budget to compete with MS so they have to be pretty strategic about which products and features they pursue. If Sony had failed as bad as MS did with the Xbone launch it would have bankrupted the entire company, but MS just dusted itself off and started working towards redeeming themselves like it was nothing.
Although I hope more PS classic games, both console and portable, make it over to PS Now to make it a more viable competitor to GamePass.
@Axelay71 I hope the Sony moneybags already made their way to FromSoft. MUST. HAVE. BLOODBORNE 2.
@playstation1995 @hypnotoad @velio84 Same here I've been rewatching the trailer ALOT XD.
@munstre I did some digging, all of those controversial claims were proven false.
Makes sense since he's still active in the Voice Actor industry...they would have banned him everywhere if they had turned out to be true.
@arsmolinarc agreed mate, still some devs Sony need to bag for exclusive to Sony, so they don't go else where.
Never been a big fan of platform games but Ratchet & Clank was great. First time ever playing it was with the recent 60 FPS patch. Had a blast playing it so now I am actually looking forward to the sequel.
Crazy eh, maybe I should be more open minded about games that are not pure FPS after all…
