Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War will take up a considerable chunk of your PS5's SSD. It's estimated that Sony's next-gen console has around 700GB of usable storage space straight out of the box, but that won't last you very long if Cold War's freshly revealed file size is anything to go by.
The official word is that you'll need a whopping 133GB free in order to install Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War on PS5. That's roughly 20 per cent, or one fifth, of your PS5's storage space gone, just like that.
Meanwhile, the PS4 version of Cold War requires 95GB of free space. Better, but it's still huge.
However, it should be noted that you can uninstall specific game modes in order to lower the overall file size. For example, you can choose to uninstall the campaign or Zombies to free up some space. It's unclear how much room each mode actually takes, though.
What do you make of this? Is 133GB taking the p*ss, or were you expecting some games to be this huge on next-gen machines? Get making some room in the comments section below.

It should be less on ps5 due to the SSD not requiring duplicate files, not more. Other games are smaller on ps5 too due to the SSD.
That’s too much. COD doesn’t optimize file size at all, and it makes me not wanna get it honestly. I need space for other games more. It can’t justify that much space for me.
@darkswabber 4K textures take a lot of memory.
@Jaz007 Same. Thank goodness I'm not a hardcore CoD fan lol.
@Jarobusa spiderman remastered, miles morales and assassins creed valhalla say hi.
And this is without DLC and patches....
-edit-
Apparently it needs 285Gb to be installed!!!

can I uninstall the multiplayer?
A few updates in and you’ll be looking at a 200gb game. That’s a no from me dawg.
I was under the (quite possibly mistaken) impression that although the game has higher textures (4k) and is generally better looking and performing (new gen after all) that because of advances in data compression and the super fast internal ssd being able to extract and use that data quicker than ever before that file sizes would therefore be smaller. I'm not really a techie though so I could easily have misinterpreted things.
Anyone heard how much of the 825 HD is left after the UI??
Eesh, that’s just plainly too much. Especially when the extended storage costs a bloody fortune.
20% so is that 655 GB of usable storage?
This is precisely why I’m not getting this game. F oook that
@nessisonett @InvaderJim @Culjoseth The PS5 SSD itself is 825GB. That's the whole thing — not just usable storage.
Estimates put the actual amount of usable storage at around 650-700GB, as the article says.
Jesus, thats a lot.
@ShogunRok Oh dear 😟 So additional space is mandatory very early on, otherwise it'll be the "delete and reinstall games shuffle" right off the bat.
@ShogunRok wanted to state the same. You are right sir.
@ShogunRok
Exactly, not starting with 1tb people
@ShogunRok Well dang, that’s confusing. 650GB? Dreadful.
I was expecting around 150GB considering its 250GB to install on PC, so it only being 133GB is good news.
I would not mind if it was a stunning AAAA massive adventure game of the likes we have not seen before for next generation.
But it’s just sheer lazy space optimisation and I guess the way they code etc.
I can never work out why COD has such massive file sizes.
@ThaBEN this is considered to be the size with the warzone free to play game. Black ops will be implemented there in december so that size is bigger then and added to the 133GB of BO. You can skip that warzone if you do not want to install that too.
@banacheck on PC it has 175GB with warzone.
133GB probably doesn't include Warzone, add that in and it's probably closer to 285GB.
@nessisonett @Broosh Yep, it's not a lot! Obviously not all games are going to be a ridiculous 133GB, but 650-700GB still won't last long unless you're deleting things on a regular basis.
Nope, I'm staying with MW. I'm not gettin this game.
@ShogunRok or move and park games to an external disk for example...
Meh, don’t mind games of this size as long as it’s not due to bad optimisation. I never play more than a few games at a time anyway. And if you can delete parts once finished, or that you’re not interested in, then all the better.
@ORO_ERICIUS
"If you’re looking to get this year’s Call Of Duty then you’re going to need 250GB of hard drive space for the PC version, according to the latest information from Activision.
That assumes you install the full game using the highest quality assets, but it can be reduced to 175GB if you don’t intend to run the game at 4K."
Guys I found this. You can uninstall different modes and such if you are done or do not want them.
Dead Ops Arcade – 4.8GB
Campaign Pack 1 – 13.5GB
Campaign Pack 2 – 17.9GB
Campaign Pack 3 – 11.5gb
Zombies Base Install – 3.8GB
Multiplayer Base Install – 10.6GB
Great or not?
Wow. I thought games in the new gen would take up less space after all the noise we were hearing a few months ago. That's awful then... If the PS5 has 650GB of usable space that's not good at all if install sizes aren't shrinking...
I mean bloody hell, the PS5 is physically massive so why the miniscule harddrive?!?! Oh yes, because we're being charged an arm and a leg to make up for the launch cost by having to buy external harddrive space and paying £70 a flipping game.
Their file size actively makes me not play their titles.
That's terrible. Hopefully it's just a case of poor optimisation on the developer's part and not the standard moving forward. I really don't want to be splashing out on expanding the storage right out of the gate.
Wait...PS4 is 95GB, but PS5 is 133GB? And poor people buying a Series S. That 136GB (yes, 3GB more on the Series S|X) is going to take up 37% of the 364GB usable storage space!
https://www.callofduty.com/blog/2020/11/Black-Ops-Cold-War-Pre-Loading-File-Size-Details
You want next gen quality textures and effects? Here you go. You don't? We have a product for you, it's called PS4.
PC was able to get their gargantuan 250gb lowered to 125gb for cold war. Hopefully something similar happens with consoles.
@Menchi
Or you simply transfer from an external, just the same as you will have to do with the Xbox.
Incorrect. It will take up 0GB
Me I'm already looking towards expansion ssd's.
The question I would like to ask if the internal ssd fails how difficult will it be to replace which we can do with the ps3 and the ps4 as the ps5 ssd looks almost attached or built into the system!
@pip_muzz
Well launch is rough. In a few year it will be better
Waiting is always cheaper when it comes to technology!
@darksoul77
It's a brick!
Well you need to sock in it? Melting In I mean otherwise its useless? Or could you use the expand storages? Dunno
@lacerz Also a viable option. People want all the improvements but don't want to face the cost of said improvements.
I know it's COD, which always takes up way too much, but even with compression I just don't see other games' storage sizes going down over the life of the console, generally speaking. How much incentive is there for the devs to optimize for this anyhow. Kinda why I've been unhappy with the drive size from the start but it is what it is.
Yeah 100% not getting this
@darkswabber hi to those games. They are much smaller in size compared to COD. Warzone, story, Zombie, multiplayer; etc.
Think I’m good for this Call of duty to be in a sale before I pick it up. Just think that is just the standard file size, you wait till the updates start coming through. 😂😳
That nothing compared to the whooping 250GB if you get it on PC. Still a huge amount regardless though.
Why would people be expecting small file sizes? AAA games will mostly be around this figure
I have zero interest in this game; I'd just like to know if we will be obliged to install/download 4K textures for every single game out there or if there's a chance they'll be in an optional Pack.
@Culjoseth there is a leak suggesting 667 gb 😖
I'm pretty sure I raised the small drive and increasing game size issue a couple of months ago.
Everyone seemed super excited about managing their games on external drives back then.
@ThaBEN This is extremely concerning!!!
Lol and this is at launch. With a few multiplayer updates, this will take over 200GB within months.
Hard pass.
@andreoni79
I guess there’s a small chance lower quality assets could be an option given devs will have to use them for the weaker series s anyway. But why not just delete games as you go rather than having an inferior experience?
@lacerz So 2 /3 big games and you are done... 😬
@blacklivesmatter No this whole generation it was COD and the Ubisoft liveservice games that where so insane.
@Jarobusa the point was those games are smaller on ps5 than their ps4 counterparts due to less duplicate files, even tho they have 4K files and raytracing.
I didn't expect the OS to use up so much space. Those file size are absolutely insane. I'm glad this is ont of the games I am the least interested in
@Flaming_Kaiser
Yeah...probably limit your Series S storage to one COD/GaaS and save the rest for for 3 or 4 smaller games.
I need to ask a n00b question...
I'm assuming I can delete the game files and it won't delete my game saves for that game (so I can download the 133GB later if I wanted to and carry on where I left off)? Is that right?
@thefourfoldroot My 1080p TV still works fine and since I don't have money to waste on a new 4K TV I just would like to ignore those "superior" features. And publishers think it's fine to release half baked games since they can patch them later; as a customer I think I should be able to decide what to put in my tiny SSD.
@andreoni79
If the assets are 4K they’ll look better even scaled down on a 1080p TV. And we can decide what we want on our consoles more than ever before - such as deleting modes in COD as explained today for example, or just deleting a game we’ve finished in order to have room for another one. And yes, maybe they’ll let people download series s quality assets if they really want to, I just wouldn’t see the point personally.
Cod died a long time ago 4 me what with there 90s player 2 player connection and over the top updates 4 in game Purchases just 2 make an extra pound bringing in Futuristic guns in a modern setting shooter just 2 keep up with fortnight dont they no there game is called call of duty I dont think they do because they are plums
One day a future COD is going to take 1TB of space at this rate 😆
this is the exact reason I uninstalled Modern Warfare. I'm not wasting ~15% of my hard drive on a game I play occasionally.
@PixelRunner All of your save data for any given game is stored in a cloud so you can uninstall a game, come back six months later or whatever, redownload and pick up where you left off.
@Jaz007 That's part of the conspiracy! That COD intentionally takes up a ton of room so that once it's on your HDD, you think twice about buying a new game (since you can't fit anything else on there), and just get more DLC instead!
Think I'm going to pass on this might pick it up next year just for the campaign when it's really cheap. But yea that's way too much space, especially when you look at mw massive size and then you look at games like ghosts of tushima which is way smaller and way better looking imo. Think they need to sort this out, because I was playing me few weeks ago just fancied a game online took me a day to get everything installed played for a week then deleted it lol.
@PegasusActual931 thanks
The PS5 is my first "proper" console for a decade (2 gens of Nintendo since my old XBoxs and PlayStations).
Who cares about COD, anyway.
Wouldn't give it 3 gig so....
This thing isn’t going anywhere near my precious PS5 ssd space!!!
@East76landS you are so banned
This type of articles, I can live without. Surely they are in "I got to eat" category. This issue is at the same level of silliness as the one with "PS5 is HUGE" where do I put it? I guarantee you will be able to install at least 5 games. I think it's enough. You can resume, switch etc betwin them. My library on PS4 contains almost 300 titles. What amount of space do need to fit my needs...I want them all installed. F**kin Sony doesn't give me enough space. This is ridiculous. And the huge PS5 issue....are you living in a box? If you are, how can you afford a PS5? If you are not, is this an issue that can prevent you from buying a PS5? If yes, what is PS5? If no, why is everyone talk about it?
@Jarobusa 4k textures can be seriously optimized to be loaded on a SSD, this is poor optimization
A sign of the current times. An external hard drive is now a must for gaming. However these huge game file size is regular on the current gen, you would think surely there would be a massive difference going into the next gen but its more or less the same story. The PS5 not having at least 1TB storage straight from the box is criminal. Absolute let-down and does not warrant a release day buy.
@ShogunRok Especially with added memory cost up the ass for at least couple of years with this upcoming new gen lol
@PixelRunner Yes, game data and save data are two different things — they're stored separately, both on the console. It's the same on PS5 as it is on PS4. If you delete a game, the save data won't go with it. Likewise, if you delete save data, you won't delete the actual game.
On top of that, you can upload your save data to the cloud if you're a PlayStation Plus subscriber. This lets you back up your saves in case anything happens to your console.
Well, people kept moaning about 4K gaming, instead of actually fun games, so here it is.
@ShogunRok Thanks much appreciated 😁 Exactly as I was hoping
yea think ill pass on this CoD as well, CoD hasn't been the same since Ghosts IMO.
This was to be expected. Lots of games have gone past the 100GB mark now.
Just a shame the internal drive is so small for this day and age.
@W0rl0ck Woah, what’s the gossip, I wanna know why their comment was removed! Spill the tea sis!
@thefourfoldroot I play only offline, so this gen policy annoyed me with all the mandatory installations of multiplayer updates or DLC you haven't bought when all I need are just the main game patches. Hope they organize the whole thing better this time! 🤞
@andreoni79
Yeah, hopefully the ability to delete parts of games will also extend to the ability to not even download parts we aren’t interested in. We’ll never get rid of the need for patches though, which would be the main disadvantage of being totally offline I would imagine.
@thefourfoldroot I go online only to download patches or when a game like Monster Hunter World offers some extras even to those who don't have PS+. I used to do that for new costumes, weapons or events but if I try to do that now I'm forced to download a +30 GB update because of the DLC I haven't bought... 🤷♂️
@lacerz Then it sounds useless because the harddisk upgrades are so expensive. I think the PS5 size is small already and COD is ridiculous with their install sizes. 😬
No need for that space. Passing this one up! Holding onto Modern Warfare till part 2.
COD should come with it's own special edition external hard drive rather than the crap they usually package it with.
@ORO_ERICIUS As of now you can only move PS4 games NOT PS5 games to an external HDD or SSD which is some BS and needs to change ASAP.
