NieR Replicant now has a confirmed release date, both in Japan and here in the West. The action RPG will launch in the US and Europe on the 23rd April 2021 for PS4, while Asia gets it a day earlier. There's been no mention of a PS5 version.
For those totally out of the loop, the new NieR Replicant is an enhanced remaster of the old NieR Replicant, which was a Japan-only release on PS3. It features a different main character to the one you may remember from the Western release of NieR.

I forgot this was coming to PS4. Strange that there are still big games when PS5 is coming out.
I own NieR on PS3, so I assume this is a free upgrade?
Just kidding, it looks cool. Excited to see more.
Hell yeah dude! WAKE UP WEISS
@get2sammyb If I can't send in my manual to Square as proof and receive a free PS4 copy I am going to literally complain on Twitter ngl.
@get2sammyb compared to nier automata how is this game. Nier automata was one of my favorite ps4 games. I got the platinum without cheating...sure i did...
NieR Automata is in my top 3 games of the gen. I never played Replicant and I'm really excited for this !
Damn that's....a lot later than I expected still excited though pleeeeeeease do Drakengard HD after
I played Gestalt around like 2012 or 2013, so to finally be able to play Replicant and have a PC copy of that next to Automata is going to be pretty sweet.
I really hope there's ps5 patch for true 4K and stable 60 fps. Day one for me if the game is as good as nier automata π
@nessisonett Yeah, it always seems a bit like they're sending the game to die. Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 (i.e. Fire Emblem 5) was released in 1999... On the SNES. 5 years after the PS1 came out and 7 months before the PS2 came out in Japan. The series nearly died because of stuff like that until fan demand fuelled by Smash Bros got them to release the 7th game internationally.
I was looking at Nier automata in the store sale, haven't played any of them, but keep hearing what a great game it is so might pick it up b4 the sale ends. So many games still to play on ps4 starting to think I could have waited for a bit for ps5 but I'm just impatient lol
Don't remember this one. Anybody know why it was Japan only? The scantily clad barely legals?
I still haven't played Automata b/c I hated the demo but this one looks closer to the original which I enjoyed way back when, maybe on PS+. That building and street near the end looks like where Nier began.
With that location and the girls I could imagine this being a bridge between the other games as I never knew how they connected. Not that Nier was all that straight forward either, Ghosts, fake people, talking books. I remember thinking about it b/c the ending of XCX reminded me of it but that's about it.
With PS5 out there and all of those dual release games I can imagine this being on sale right quick soon after release.
@Matroska Ahh yes, Thracia776, what a strange game that is. Not just the background but the actual plot is insane too.
@rjejr This is literally Nier 1 but a version where you play as a young guy instead of an old guy. There are other plot nuances that are different but thatβs the gist.
@rjejr It wasn't Japan only, just a certain version of it*. It came out in the west but there were two versions. One was the Japanese version on PS3 and had the more pretty boy main character and this little girl character was your sister. The other one, also on the 360, the only one we got, he was an older, grizzled guy and the little girl was your daughter.
*Ah, after re-reading your post and not just responding after the first few sentences, I see you said you'd played it. I thought you thought no versions came out here.
@nessisonett Thanks. That old man living in the village with his sick daughter storyline never did make any sense in the overarching story so maybe they explain the story a little better in this one.
It's been so long I could probably play this as a whole new game while I wait a couple of years for PS5 Slim.
Can't wait for the game, nier automata is one of the best ps4 games, I spend 100+ hours to platinum and get all the ending for that game π
Also it has one of the best story and characters in gaming.
@ellsworth004 The platinum for the ps3 version was a joke, you had to complete the game like 3 times. I literally couldn't see it through, so hopefully they change that. It's a good story and interesting mix of gameplay, but hopefully they make it a bit more modern, too.
@rjejr I liked Gestalt. It felt so much different from the usual spiky haired school boy strong type.
@rjejr - The storyline is identical in both versions, the only change is that some minor dialogue between Nier and Yonah was altered from sister and brother to father and daughter. If you feel it didn't make sense then, it still won't now.
@Shigurui Thanks, think I'll skip it then. I wonder if I still have the original somewhere?
@Jayofmaya I liked him, but it made no sense to the story that I can recall. Enslaved Journey to the West and Horizon ZD both did the post apocalypse society story better. Unless I just misread the entire game?
I still have my original PS3 copy, but still excited to play this one even if they are almost the same game like some people say
@Matroska Yeah played the original - read your edit- - but I thought this was more of a sequel than what sounds like a skin. Surprised they didn't just put both in 1 game and let you choose who you play as, old man or young man. Guess they had their reasons. I'll be skipping this now, don't see the point. Trailer looked cool though.
I think the first NieR was way better than Automata (love both either way). Excited to meet with Emil again!
@get2sammyb "I own NieR on PS3, so I assume this is a free upgrade?"
GOLD!!!
@rjejr I had Enslaved on ps3 but I never really enjoyed it enough to get past the first hour or so. Yeah, I kind of preferred the idea that it was an alternative world, but you're probably not wrong. All the hollowed out buildings and machine enemies correlate to that. As for Horizon, that was definitely a decent story. The whole destroy/create duality was a nice touch and done in a smart way with the Greek god nick names, too. Can't wait to see what they do with Forbidden West.
Hi there fellow gamers. I still remenber the emotional, mind bending, heart broken rollercoaster that this game provides.
The first time:" That was a very good story, color me impressed"
The second time:"Oh No, what have I done!"
Third time:"This canΒ΄t become worse, can it?"
Forth time:"Yes it can, yes it can."
And next year I can do and fell all those things again. Very exciting indeed. It is certainly a ride from begining to the very end.
From what I saw in terms of gameplay, it is going to be MUCH BETTER. CanΒ΄t wait.
And the SOUNDTRACK. That amazing, beautiful and powerful soundtrack. I still listen to it to this very day.
Cheers, saty safe out there and happy gaming to us all
Nier Automata is easily one of my favourite PS4 games, so I'll be eager to play Replicant.
I remember I played the one on the 360. So if thise Nier Replicant is the same one, I am down to do it again.
New Monster Hunter. New NieR. New Horizon. New MegaTen games. Probably new Resident Evil. New Ys. Maybe a new Zelda. New console launches.
Next year is sounding awesome for the industry.
Anyway, I enjoyed NieR: Automata, so I'll definitely be grabbing this when it releases.
@rjejr - Ok major spoilers for a 10 year old game ahead lol.
The story is basically this. The Black Scrawl disease was wiping out humanity. In a bid to outlive the disease the 2 Grimoires, Noir and Weiss were used to separate human souls from their bodies and human clones (Replicants) were developed and are waiting to reunite with their human souls (Gestalts) and androids have been sent to oversee that this happens.
You begin the game as human Nier and it moves forward 1300 years and you then play as clone Nier.
There's way more to it than that, but that's the general gist of it. If you didn't realise those things then yeah, you misread it.
If this is a full price game, some may chafe at a remaster costing that much. But this feels more like a remake, so the price is probably more warranted. I'm just saying, there may be PR hurdles depending on price and marketing...
@Shigurui Yeah that sounds about right, nice summary.
I would never in a million years have remembered that on my own, but reading it brings it back. And it does read a bit like XCX except instead of 2 books humans had an alien.
@Shigurui You'd think though, that if they had books strong enough to sperate humans from their souls and then put those souls back into clones they could have found a cure for the black scrawl disease, that seems an easier ask.
@rjejr - Hah, you're not wrong! It's been years since I played it but I think that's explained away by missing pages lol.
@Shigurui "I think that's explained away by missing pages lol."
Yeah it might have been. It's kind of coming back to me. I remember a long room w/ a wooden floor w/ a wooden chair in it. Somebody is either explaining it all to us or we're reading it, but everything was kind of explained near the end.
Not sure how much I followed all of it back then, but it was explained. π
@rjejr - Yeah, IIRC there's a big lore reveal about the Gestalt Project in that room just before the Devola and Popola boss fight.
All this NieR chat is making me want to play it again, I only have the 360 version though and that console died a death ages ago. April can't come soon enough!
@Shigurui So I've been on twitter for years and the internet since the mid-90's w/ AOL, Compuserve, Prodigy et al, and it's thanks to your post that I finally deciphered what IIRC stands for.
OK, so I got it wrong, I thought it was - "if I recall correctly" but it's actually "if I remember correctly" but close enough. I always just skipped over it, thought it was something Latin like RSVP that it didn't matter what it stood for as it never really mattered.
But good to know, so thanks.
Have fun replaying it. I'm about 33 hours into The Witcher 3 thinking I may need to replay that b/c every time I make a decision I feel like it was the wrong 1, or options just go away. I'm used to playing games w/ side missions, lots of JRPGs, but never a game w/ this much determination by the choices you make. I'm trying to focus now on what makes sense for the character and forget the rest. Good thing I'm not a completionist.
