Of all the old school franchises to bring back on modern consoles, ToeJam & Earl wasn't exactly top of our list. However, we've a fondness for this unusual Mega Drive roguelike, so it's great to see that it's coming to PS4 in a brand new game. ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove was successfully funded on Kickstarter a while back, and now finally has a solid release date of 1st March 2019.
The new title is being developed by HumaNature Studios, a small indie team with some of the original creators behind ToeJam & Earl on board. As you can see from the above trailer, the game draws direct inspiration from the original game, with a hand drawn art style, funky beats, and randomly generated levels. The story seems to be that the alien buddies have crash landed on Earth, and need to find all the pieces of their spaceship to escape.
What do you think of ToeJam & Earl: Back in the Groove? Will you be giving this a look when it launches in March? Get funky in the comments below.

I wasn't expecting a remake
The first is one of my favourite games on the Megadrive and I still play it to this day. I backed this on Kickstarter so can't wait for it to finally release so that I can sneak up on Santa and steal his presents 😂
Oh yessssss. Can't wait for this
I guess the style is in keeping, but I really don't like it. Seems like a missed opportunity.
I was halfway kinda expecting the same grainy audio quality like what we had back on the Genesis/Mega Drive TJ&E games. In fact, it would be cool if that's a filter in the settings.
I can't wait for this.
@JoeBlogs Good questions. I guess if I compare the original Fallout to Fallout 3 the style is still inkeeping (in terms of theme and mood) but how they executed it was completely different. Another example, albeit more spurious, would be how the new Spiderman game chose pseudo-realism rather than a cell shaded look which would be truer to the original comic interpretation. I'm glad both games took the route they did. So, whilst I recognise the visuals are in-keeping with the original, in this case, I hoped that the developer would choose to differentiate the game a little more.
As for my missed opportunity comment. That was more about how this game seems to stick pretty rigidly to the original in terms of gameplay and features. I certainly don't want to go back to the bad old days of TJ&E 3, but something a little less dated may have gone down better with me personally. Hope that helps explain my viewpoint a little.
Hoping this will be good. The original Toejam and Earl is one of the all-time greats of local co-op gaming.
This is a must buy for me. I couldn't put the original title down on my Megadrive, it was definitely a game before it's time with all the randomly generated elements. I've watched a few of the recent developer streams of Back in the Groove and its certainly looking like a lot of fun.
Almost forgot about this.
