And just like that, Sony has announced that a beta for the next PlayStation 4 firmware update is happening here in the West. Earlier today, the company revealed that a Japanese beta would be taking place in the near future, so it was only a matter of time.
If testing out the new firmware update sounds like something you'd be interested in, then you'll be happy to know that registration is now open. North American users can sign up through here, while European users should click through this link instead.
Will you be attempting to join the beta? Dream up the most outlandish 5.0 features in the comments section below.

Signed up for the European one for fun and larfs. Never done it before. if they do bring in name changes, I must must must resist to not change my name to something utterly ridiculous and even worse then current.
@NintendoFan4Lyf the same for me
@NintendoFan4Lyf Yeah, I saw that, too.
So I've signed up and been selected for all the betas. My question is this: Am I just lucky? Does signing up get you into the program for good, or do I have to sign up for each individual beta?
Any news on what's new for 5.0?
I guess I'm in Playstation Now
((not really))
Ah so that's why they think PlayStation Now is doing ok..
I would like to see GIF and Video (both captured video and YouTube links) support added to the communities players create. Support for the Dolby Access app so select Netflix content and select future games can be enjoyed in Dolby Atmos. Background/Theme creator, so users can use a captured video clip as their background. Extend the video upscaling capabilities to include video played via the Media Player app not just DVD's & Bluray's. More Key tone sound FX's to choose from would be good as well, the default key tone is annoying at this point.
Support for H.265 video (HEVC) not just an MP4 H.264 with 4K resolution, DSD 5.6 MHz, DTS-HD & Dolby TrueHD audio support in the Media Player app. Supersampling support for the YouTube & Netflix apps for users of PS4 PRO on a 1080P display, so videos will play in 4K but sample down to 1080p resolution for a crisper cleaner image. "Stats for Geeks", realtime audio & video bitrate info/analysis overlay in the Media Player app.
It will be interesting to see what they have been working on when they reveal more details. I don't think the update will include anything that I'm interested in personally so I'm not getting my hopes up too high but I would love to be wrong.
@DiddyWahDiddy you have to sign up for each one individually
I've participated in the last two betas. Both went well, with only minor issues being reported on the beta forum. The biggest issue I've ran into with one of the betas was having to re-register every controller with the PS4 again...including the Move controllers. I use a PSVR stand/charging station, so it took me some time to locate the old charger cable.
The PS Now question looks to have been addressed.
Never again will I take part in a firmware beta. Not after the 4.0 beta wiped about 2 years worth of saves/screenshots/video clips. Some of the saves hadn't even auto-uploaded to the backup either.
@DiddyWahDiddy just lucky. I didn't get on the 4.5 but I have been on 2 before that.
This time I've signed up with my uk, Japanese, USA and Canadian accounts. At least one should work!
We didn't get asked about psnow in Europe though - I'm guessing 5.0 will either enable 1080p/60 streaming on psnow or offer PS4 titles as downloads. I'm a psnow subscriber and when you browse games on the PS4 store, if you goto a game that's on psnow next to the 'buy' button it has a 'this is on your psnow account, click to play instantly' - which I thought was quite neat
@get2sammyb It had a Yes / No selection for me when I visited the Beta signup. Maybe a browser issue? I was on Android's Chrome.
@thedevilsjester They fixed it lol.
@get2sammyb My question is: Why do they need to ask this question? First question "What is your PSN ID". Given that data, I am pretty certain that they can look up if you are a PS Now subscriber.
This seems like a cleverly disguised advertisement, rather than an effort to poll users.
@NintendoFan4Lyf ya they will have no way of know the PSN account you signed up for doesnt have PS NOW
oh and they changed the question to both yes and not currently
@DiddyWahDiddy sign up every time youve just been lucky
Never been chosen to do a beta yet so going to try again
still hoping they will bring back custom soundtracks for games wwe 2k is no good with out using the right themes for caws
