Cancelled content

Niche Japanese developer Cave has cancelled two of its upcoming PlayStation Vita games. The titles – which were announced at last year’s Tokyo Game Show – included an unnamed shooter and a social game called Shirotsuku. Neither of the games were likely to get a Western release.

While the headline doesn’t look good for Vita’s third-party situation, there’s actually a deeper narrative at work here. Cave itself isn’t doing particularly well, especially after the resignation of its COO. It’s possible these titles could have been cancelled due to a restructuring process at the developer, rather than a decision regarding the Vita’s current lacklustre commercial fortunes. After all, Cave doesn’t have a problem with niche consoles – it’s been releasing Xbox 360 exclusives in Japan for years.
