Have recently installed new hardrive, all went to plan all updated and restarted, hooked controller with the wire and It goes as far as the screen where it says please connect and press the ps button to start and that’s as far as will take me, I press the ps button and it does nothing

Did you reinstall the latest OS update from a USB stick?

Hi yes I followed instructions on downloading the update onto a sub stick and then onto the PS4, would it matter if I did this a couple months ago? Do I need to download again if there have been newer versions? I just don’t get why it won’t let me press the ps button the controller worked fine when on safe mode to complete the reinstall

Don't think it makes any difference as to when you downloaded it though the OS update has to match or exceed the last update the PS4 was on (think I'm right in saying that?)

Are you sure you've got the right cable connected? Sorry to ask such a question but I had a similar problem when I connected a cable to sync a DS4 and nothing happened. Changed cable and all was well (I had SO many micro-USB cables knocking around, I had no idea which was the PS4's).

Do you think that would make a difference? Using any micro usb? I don’t even know where the original PS4 cable is and to reinstall the software i used a cheapo wired controller which works absolutely fine in safe mode all buttons worked etc…

So long as it's a data + power cable then you should be fine. I wasn't sure where mine was (might've left it in the box in the loft?) so bought some cheap cable off Amazon (one of their Basics ones) for about £4 which does the job. Here's the one I had:

[EDIT: Blimey, they've gone up in price!]

Not sure on the 3rd party wired controller front - I've only ever bothered with official DS4s and didn't have any problem when I swapped the Pro's internal hard drive for an SSD.
