My last controller basically took its last breath a few days ago, it no longer turns on but before then I had bought a bba which worked amazingly. I got that edge I wanted during games. long story short, I have a new controller now. when I connect the attachment it turns on just like usual and supposedly works, but then after a little while seemingly at random the controller stops responding to it or my inputs aren't registering.

The attachment is clearly still on since the screen lights up when I press on it and I'm pretty sure the controller I bought is an original since I haven't been given any reason to believe it not to be (I could still be wrong). tried blowing on it, which didn't really work.

Any ideas on what's wrong?

@Axion Dirty contacts on the controller maybe? Try some contact cleaner spray.

Or it might just not be connected properly, so try removing and refitting it?

I found the L3 button (normally run) doesn't respond when I have the BBA on my PS4 pad, but other than that, I like having the option of L1/R1 on the paddles as I find - due to the way I hold the controller - the L1/R1 buttons at the top are uncomfortable to press.

EDIT: Not that any of that helps you, but I just thought you'd like to know that you aren't alone in experiencing issues with that attachment. That said, although mine is officially boxed, I have my doubts as to whether it is an official Sony product - but it was substantially cheaper at the time, bearing in mind I bought it during a stock shortage.

So just to update, forcing the attachment into the controller seems to remedy the issue, although I worry about it breaking with the amount of force. Thank you @jimboblink for suggesting the contact issue, tried a bit of isopropyl alcohol and it worked. Everything seems to be good for now, thanks all for bothering to reply!
