Topic: Advice on PSN account and getting a second PS5

Hi everyone,
Need some advice. I've been a Playstation gamer since the PS1. I now have a 13 year old son who loves to game. I bought a PS5 on release and he and I share it, using my PSN account that I've had from the start.

He is now getting to the point where he needs his own console in his room, so he can chat to his mates without us over his shoulder (and so we can watch the lounge TV)! And I obviously want to keep mine downstairs.

Trouble is - as we've been sharing the PSN account all this time, it has both our saved games and progress attached. I am not sure what to do...

Should I let him take my PSN, saves, trophies etc. Then start a new account for me?

Should I start him a new one? But he'll not have his progress - he loves his FOrtnite etc so won't be happy not having progress.

Or can I have two and just log in on either machine?

Not sure what to do, so any advice welcome.

@Grovesey3-16 Probably the least painful thing for your son would be having him keep the account and then you can create a new one for yourself. If you go this route, you'll of course need to change the info on the old account to match him (even ask him if he wants to change the name of the account). Then have your new one as the main PS+ adult account logged onto both consoles so he won't have any issues playing with friends online.

Alternatively, I would read more into all the other games he plays. You mentioned Fortnite, from what I recall Fortnite and Fall Guys' cosmetic items and progress are tied to EpicGames account so if you were to log onto EpicGames and changed the PSN account associated to it to another PSN account, then your son could still play on a new account without losing progress. Rocket League doesn't offer the same thing so I'd weigh into what your son wouldn't mind restarting or continuing.

You could also log into both PS5s and continue sharing based on your play times. But since your son is getting older he'll likely not want to share anymore. Best of luck, bud.

Thanks mate.

So, adding to this - and bear with me

If I add another sub account to the main account, which is my new one. THen let him take the main account to his new PS5 - can I use my new sub account on the original PS5. Appreciate I lose save games etc. That is fine.

If he is online on his PS5 playing Fortnite and I want to play COD on my account online, will that work? I know we both can't be playing COD, for example, on both machines, from the same account (or can we if we have two copies of the game)?

@Grovesey3-16 sadly that will not work. You are able to co-op on many games with sub account at least on the same system, not sure on multiple. When my daughter was younger I made a sub account for her. Now that she is older she ended up using my account,as hers was a kids account, and she wanted more Sims 4 items so she started paying on my account exclusively. In retrospect I should have started her own account then. Now when I log into my ps5 and she is playing on my ps4 it tells me I can't play as someone is already using that account. Occasionally I can play a game if it is offline though. I recommend starting a whole new account for one of you. Hopethat helps. If my rambling is confusing just ask and I'll try and explain it better.

Ah that makes sense. The child account thing is a pain, as you don't seem to be able to change it, I've made a similar error.

So, looks like a new PSN account for me it is then. I guess I've got to pay for it too!
