FIFA was always going to come out on top at the end of this year simply because you can't beat the family friendliness and inoffensive nature of the game. COD, AC4 et al. might have garnered massive sales but won't have topped the Xmas presents list.
There's a reason why there's no BC with current gen consoles, as the old porting last gen to next gen games makes its presence felt. That said, if the ports offer updated visuals and some extras, then I suspect many gamers won't mind paying and playing the game all over again, especially if the source is of a high standard.
What really needs to happen is a better pricing model to encourage sales.
