Fiddly, yes, and you're right, it's something you'd probably automate in a game about pirates. However, for the most part, this is not. This is a trading game set in the era of pirates. While the Buccaneers expansion offers more opportunities to an entrepreneurial pirate, you'll need to master the basics of trading and colony growth before you'll really get anywhere. All that said, though, there are some of us who like the challenge of being smarter than the AI. Automating those trade routes is an entertaining challenge, and the campaign provides excellent training for what promises to be a highly replayable Free Mode. Kalypso has provided a very detailed economic sandbox to work in, and it can be equally rewarding if you put in the effort.
I don’t find that the game is that excessive in terms of price. I enjoy the events and collectibles and the pass generally lets me participate in everything. Technically speaking, it’s a step up from FX 3, with better physics and graphics. Many licensed tables for a wonderful nostalgia trip and a lot of great originals! 5/5, play every chance I get.
