My guess is that it will play out more or less the same as this generation - PS4 owners will get a PS5 and XBO will get a XSX without a whole lot of moving back or forth. What is clear is MS are adopting a new strategy to previous gens. I imagine they've looked at the likes of Apple and gone.. how can we sell hardware every couple of years like they do and get brand loyalty. The only way forward to make this happen is to start selling the idea that your games will work across many generations of console (if that's your preference), or PC (windows licence) or phones (XBLive subs). I think they are going after the software market not the hardware one
