Running a PlayStation website can often skew our perspective when it comes to the wider gaming industry. But from where we're sitting, it feels like there's already a momentum to the PlayStation 5 -- something that the Xbox Series X doesn't quite have outside of hardcore circles. And new research, as reported by MCV, brings some statistical backing to this theory.
A "wide-ranging" survey put forward by pop culture agency Experience12 suggests that Sony's upcoming console is winning the next-gen popularity battle by some distance. Over 3000 people were quizzed during MCM Comic Con's online events at the end of June, and a whopping 84 per cent of participants said they were more excited for the PS5 over the Xbox Series X.
The data isn't based on a massive sample size, but it still makes for an interesting read, and is perhaps a microcosm of the bigger picture. Arguably more eyebrow-raising is that only 37 per cent of people said that they plan on buying a next-gen console at launch later this year.
It's also worth noting that the majority of these participants said PS4 is their preferred platform of the current generation. 59 per cent swear by Sony's system, while just 16 per cent went with Xbox One, 14 per cent said PC, and 8 per cent pointed to Nintendo Switch. A lot of these people will be sticking with PlayStation, it seems.
Where would you have ended up on this survey? Do you feel like PS5 is already outpacing Xbox Series X? Give us some data in the comments section below.

I feel like it’s going to be a blow out of even greater proportions than this gen honestly.
Well what do you expect when last Thursday Xbox showcase was terrible. Would should all talking about how amazing Halo Infinite looked on the 12tflop series x. But instead it’s getting so much negative press.
Again like the start of this generation, Microsoft no clear direction, muddled in communication, apologising and making mixed excuses. And being honest Sony are not and don’t really have try that hard again.
I think the narrative ms wants is dony console sales vs game pass subscriptions. But I'll be buying a ps5, and not subbing to game pass.
I’m sure Microsoft has a cunning plan probably involving subscription services and cheaper hardware for 1080p screens.
Whether or not that cunning plan will work... It might well keep them in the race but I doubt they will overtake PlayStation.
We certainly need competition and it looks like they’re only two companies who will be putting out full fat NextGen consuls.
Sonys competition next gen will be prising people from their PS4. What a flipping console and what an absolute beast of a library. It's why we are all here. Salute.
Idk what to make of this. I think Xbox is exploring some interesting ideas - that may not be for me - and I hope they do well enough to challenge PlayStation so we can all have a better experience.
@themcnoisy that's shouldn't be too hard should it? I'd like to see the last of my noisy jet engined console
As long as the Japanese giant keeps releasing top quality, single player games, i'm going nowhere.
Might buy a series s for the greater good though.
PS5, obviously. As I've said before, if you have a good PC for gaming, you don't need an Xbox. It'll be for those who are hardcore fans, and those who want a huge library of games they'll probably never play for very little money... i.e. GamePass. But then GamePass is also on PC.
The problem MS have created this gen, and seem intent on carrying on into the next, is that in terms of software, they offer nothing you can't get elsewhere, and thus for many, no reason to purchase their hardware.
I have game pass but it runs out late this year, shall not be renewing or investing in series x. At the moment series x has nothing to offer me. PS5 for me day one.
But let’s not forget the Switch, maybe a different audience but still gamers and still already 60 million sold. That’s a lot of consoles, games and money.
I still dream of the day when Sony and Nintendo have a cuddle a say ok.
You can put two of our top IPs on your console and we can have two of yours.
Thats why ps5 will destroy x box again.easy victory.word up son
Ps5 all the way!Though Gamepass really does sound interesting..
@Dezzy70. Thats not why.it helps that halo infinite was 🗑 trash.but ps5 is the more popular console.a ps5 logo was smashing records.playstation has trust and global appeal.x box doesn't.word up son
@Dezzy70 well I wouldn't say terrible.
Psychonauts 2 looks fun...and it's multi-platform.
Oh and Balan Wonderworld looks great...and it's on PS4 and Switch.
Some of the other games like The Gunk and Avowed were interesting, but overall, it was alright, but the ps5 showcase was so much better.
I'm just waiting for a Nintendo Direct at this point.
Do I think Microsoft will win? No
But could they be closer in sales than last year? Very Possible.
If "Lockhart" really is happening this holiday, I think it could sell well.
But yeah, PS5's certainly winning.
@themcnoisy salute true I'm happy with my PS4......I will wait and see before I commit.
A Handful of Brits Want a PS5
@80sGamer
A Kindle Tablet with Dodgy Controllers? Maybe.
Over-Saturated with Mario? No not really. Nintendo has been focusing on other ips recently. There are still plenty of Mario games, but they're all unique, unlike the WiiU/3DS era.
@grahamd 15 hours max............... then they can whistle for my money.
@Dezzy70
Sony and Nintendo teaming up would be a dream come true. Using your ps5 as your sock, and your Nintendo Switch 2 as the portable.
Edit: Lol not sock, dock
In my opinion, Halo Infinite's graphics look bad; not the game itself.
Still not getting the Series X for a good while however.
I think if MS are bottom to the extent they are this Gen they will go the way of Sega.
I think it's going to be a tight race.
I'm just concerned my poor Switch is sat here wondering if all it has got to look forward to over the next 12 months is being used for Paper Mario...
@WallyWest MS going the way of Sega is about as likely as North Korea winning the next Fifa World Cup frankly, they have too much money behind them.
Devils advocate : survey doesnt account for the xbox Series XS thingy.
I do think that SeX is going to flop though.
@Ryall
I think they are going to bundle the LockHeart thing with a GamePass subscription.
@playstation1995
PlayStation has grown over the years and developed its IP and new IP with pure dedication and devotion and has the hearts and minds of gamers all over the world.
Can’t wait for my PS5.
What I don’t understand about Microsoft is why they don’t learn their lesson after a mistake.
After the backlash of their drm fiasco when they announced the Xbox One they decide to go all in on a different yet similar approach with gamepass...
It’s a means to their same ultimate goal of people not owning their games, and I thought people were pretty clear on that in the first time they tried it...
@MarcG420
Because a lot of people and professional keep praising Spencer and pretend he 'turned the ship around' instead of realising xbox was better off in 2014
To the surprise of no one..
This has always been the case, everybody and their mother knows the PlayStation brand. As if anyone would of thought differently 🙄
Coming off the PS4, it's no surprise PS5 is more popular. However, certainly at the present, it would be unwise to write off Microsoft just yet, especially for Sony. Microsoft might be down (for want of a better expression), but that makes them more dangerous. I think there's a lot more interesting news and reveals from both sides still to come.
Time will tell. I know I plan on buying ps5 at launch.
Do not underestimate the power of playstation
Surprising absolutely no one.
I'm still keen on getting an xbox at some point, purely because it out powers my pc by a long way and the game pass. Which is free just by doing 2 minutes of searching on a daily basis.
But going out on a limb and saying MS will bow out early of this gen, and go 3rd party Sega style.
It doesn't surprise me in the slightest. Sony has a big user base and the vast majority will upgrade to keep their PS4 library and trophy status moving forward. It would really need a BIG mistake from Sony for people to consider swapping to Xbox.
Whether Sony's PS5 hardware approach does end up with a 'notable' difference in games like a softer, lower resolution for example, or not, I still think the majority would still upgrade to PS5 because of their library on PS4 - especially with increased digital purchases and PS+ games. Its not likely to be 'enough' for existing Playstation gamers to consider jumping ship.
Not only that, the Playstation 4 also set an expectation as far as Exclusive games and the potential quality to carry on into the next gen. Microsoft on the other hand has to convince gamers that their Studio's can deliver quality games in the future - even if they have the potential to do so after investing in numerous studio's. Point is, you have a track record on PS4 compared to an unknown quantity on Xbox. They 'could' compete on quantity, but whether they appeal or not, whether you would rather play what they develop or not, you just don't know so maybe the safest choice is to go with Sony than take a chance that MS games will deliver what you want to play.
From my perspective, I expect to upgrade to both PS5 and Series X within the first 6months (or so) - at least that is my intention but as this year proves, plans don't always come to fruition and can be taken out of your own hands. What may suit me best in terms of which option I choose to upgrade first, may well not suit another. I cannot see myself not wanting both and I think it would take a big mistake from one or the other to push their existing user base over to the other - IF they only pick one Console for a generation. MS made a mistake in 2013 but back then, there was only 1 generation of trophy/achievements, no Backwards Compatibility and not so many 'digital' game purchases to consider either. Its not as if they are worth anything either when it comes to trading in against the newer hardware. As such, it makes sense that Sony's PS5 will have a larger interest as it has a larger user base...
From an overall value perspective, I am looking forward to Series X over PS5. Having Game Pass Ultimate until at least June 2022 means that I buy the Series X and basically nothing else for a long time. Plus, I can revisit my old games with new hardware.
Halo Infinite didn't impress - but it is basically an enhanced Xbox One port on Series X. The Medium intrigues me. The Gunk looks interesting. Psychonauts 2 - albeit multiplatform - will surely be better optimized for Series X, given that Microsoft owns Double Fine. Fable is probably a while off as is Everwild and Avowed.
From a PS5-side, only Demon's Souls and Spider-Man Miles Morales look to be something I am interested in as possible launch window titles. Horizon is probably a ways off. I may consider Ratchet & Clank - never played a game in the series, but I am always up for anything. I would love some PS5 enhanced versions of The Last of Us Part 2 and Ghost of Tsushima.
@thiz no, your wrong Don Mattrick had his mistakes as head of xbox but after him Phil Spencer had his chance to change it.
he had generation to improve xbox games quality and quantity but what have he done ? nothing just get back to 360 and ps3 generation .
sony had a lot of mistakes even worst than Don Mattrick had over price - hacking - quality of third party games and even first party at beginning of the generation even one year after xbox was released but at the end they over come the problem and they get Microsoft all with good quality game.
but now all Phil Spencer talking is ***** he just wants to become Netflix .they don't wants AAA games all they announced was Gass games.
even halo and others they are becoming Gass they are not listening to people they just sell what Don Mattrick couldn't sell in other way.
it was about all time live now its Gass games who can play this kind of games offline ?
they just wants you buy game pass and after that you spend a lot of money on DLC that are not part of game pass and even if they cut your internet or your service you are holding your b .
no one say why not even one games of Microsoft exclusives didn't had number or ... they just Gass game they gave you one part without ending and after that they wants you buy to see what ends looks like games just like destiny and .... .
@thiz
Xbox did a 180 a few weeks after E3. 2014 line up and over selling xbox 360 was not Spencer credit. He was still saying kinect was essential. The change was forced who ever would be in charge did not have a choice.
@Ryall I'll admit: I'm not really an Xbox fan, but if they play their cards right with the Series S, I can see myself getting one before the PS5. Especially when Game Pass is factored in.
Microsoft lost a TON of ground this gen, though, so they can't afford any more big PR losses or poor decisions.
@MarcG420
I said it in 2013, and I'll say it now. They were never going to give up on those policies, they were always going to bide their time and implement it another way.
GamePass is essentially the;
Always Online,
No Used Games,
DRM,
Dream in the guise of a 'pro-consumer' service.
I truly believe that the full plan, in time, when they have the numbers they're aiming for will be to charge a high price and push mediocre games as an excuse for 'pro-consumer convenience'.
Phil Spencer has literally done what Don Matrrick tried to do yet he got the boot and shunned while Phil is hailed as some kind of Messiah that saved Xbox.
And I look upon the fans that say that and consider them either they have a short memory or are just plain stupid.
On a final note. Call me cynical if you will, but I don't trust Microsoft after 2013, a leopard never changes its spots. The real GamePass is coming.
@GADG3Tx87 I never forgot either. Seems the Xbox fan base either has a short memory or doesn’t care where the company is ultimately heading.
because Xbox is doing far too much talking, throwing out cinematic non gameplay trailers, we've seen nothing so far that suggests why you should buy a series x
@BAMozzy Most people who are loyal to the PS brand will never consider getting a Series X because all I see is them saying they'll just use their PC for Gamepass but I do find it funny when they say Xbox have no exclusives because they can just play them on their PC but if they are using Gamepass for PC they’ll still be brought into the Xbox ecosystem which is what MS ultimately want regardless of whether they are using Gamepass on Xbox or PC. It’s a win-win for MS even if they don’t buy a Series X, just as long as they subscribe for Gamepass on PC.
@thiz
Sony turned the xbox ship around. In 2013. Later thing changed again Im not complaining, just giving my opinion about a false narrative. Sorry about it then if you find I shouldnt
You questioned my view, I only replied without complaining
Buying both again xbox series x for multiplats exclusives and multiplayer games, ps5 for excusives only, best of both worlds.
I’m excited for the PS5 but I’m also going to pick up a cheap Xbox one or whatever the current gen is to play some of the exclusives I’ve never played. Haven’t had an Xbox since the original console so this might be a good time to give it a whirl
@MaccaMUFC Indeed. That and thinking that 'Xbox' is still just the console and that's the 'only' thing that matters despite 'Xbox' being the entire Microsoft gaming division that includes PC and any device that will allow for Streaming Xbox onto it. Why they think MS should make games just for the console and ignore all their other users on PC's (and compatible mobiles) is beyond me - just because Nintendo and Sony really only have their Console users to worry about.
For some, having Game Pass will benefit them as they can play on PC, then carry on playing on their Mobile and then maybe carry on playing on their console. Carry on playing with the same 'save/checkpoints', keeping progression between multiple platforms, earning Achievements etc. Its still Xbox - whether its on a PC, played on console or streamed to mobile and its still MS's ecosystem and still supporting MS games/studio's. They could sell 10m copies of Halo despite only selling a few million consoles but Sony can only sell as many games as consoles bought and we all know Consoles do not make money - at least not a lot at launch.
Not bashing Sony at all, but they have a different strategy to suit their own situation. They need people to buy their console to sell games and recoup investment costs. MS don't need to sell consoles as much and the Console is just 1 option for those that want it. If not, you can still play Xbox on PC or Mobiles...
Not that it matters, because you will still get fanboys picking something to brag about, something that their preferred brand has 'better' numbers on - whether that's Console sales, SSD speeds, GPU/CPU stats etc - even pathetic things like SSD storage capacity....
I don't know. It's too soon to know. I think most people are saying this because PS4 just has a lot of momentum behind it. If you're talking about just this last year, PS4 has had an awesome year. Xbox has gone the full year with just nothing of note. It's crazy. As for next gen, I find myself in this grey area. I love the specs of Xbox series x. Oddly, I hate the look. Most people don't like PS5's look, I love it. I hate the no VR stance of Xbox Series x. I would have to buy an xbox and a gaming pc since I love vr. I might actually be mostly into PS5, but then I would need a gaming pc for Halo, which I do want. But then do I really want to get a PS5 and Xbox series X? I mean bah. Xbox really needs to do VR. They need more game support as well. Spiderman was just a huge punch to the gut. Most people fail to realize how big it is for an exclusive, due to the Sony deal with the brand and movie. The name recognition is huge on that one and tons of comic lovers might buy the game and cross over. You won't get transfer like that on just about anything else except maybe transformers if they do it right some day. Speaking of...Microsoft! Get on a transformer development team and get the rights! We need a proper war for cybertron sequel.
@Paranoimia I don't get this argument. Since games are on PC we don't need an Xbox Series X? Maybe you and many others, but I by far prefer to play on a console on my couch (and no I will not bring my PC to my living room (loaded RTX 2070 by the way))
Not every one uses their PC for all gaming or even want to.
I think the big issue that everyone is avoiding is time restraints and the sheer amount of games. I spend virtually all my TV time gaming now and I barely have enough to play half the games I've accumulated this gen on ps4 and switch.
With game pass and ps+ all they're doing is piling more games onto people's backlogs. In their desperation to move into next gen they might find that a bunch of people decide to stick with what they've got for a while. Maybe this is what Microsoft are considering or even banking on with their approach to the new generation.
If people don't buy into Sony's next step for a few years things could get a bit hairy for them while Xbox will just have a big library of games for people to play no matter what console they have.
From a selfish point of view of I'd like the industry to stop for a while so I can catch up and focus on all the games I want to play, but I do like a shiny new piece of tech and I'm a sucker for a big new game release. I'd also like to see the industry focus more on creativity instead of raw power.
@Old-Red both consoles will allow you to play through your backlog. Only difference is with PS5 you’re getting next gen games that don’t look like late ps3/360 games as well. 😉
Also with your last sentence I feel like ps5 would be the way to go, just saying.
@GADG3Tx87 FOMO put out a really good video on what you’re talking about and how the future will look for Gamepass and the used market. The scariest thing is if Microsoft is successful with their plans, Sony could follow suit:
https://youtu.be/SoVeqsXh2k0
Only those thinking in the short-term can’t see what’s going on.
It wouldn't bother me if both PS5 and Xbox series X both sold over 100 million consoles. I think it sad that Microsoft didn't put enough effort into turning Xbox one around with Game of the year quality games. Instead they turned to backwards compatibility and day one subscription games with reduced quality.
@Jarobusa That is of course your choice. That's why I very clearly said "for many" and not "everybody".
I try not to read too much into what online polls say or what's trending on Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, etc. I'll wait to see the numbers when the consoles are released. But for me, PS5 is ahead simply because MS just hasn't shown me much to get excited about. With the exception of Forza, the franchises MS has that I would've put near the top of my favorites at one time have all taken a step back or disappeared. While I'd say LittleBigPlanet and Gran Turismo were nothing to write home about this gen, Sony delivered the goods on nearly everything else, even publishing a few great new IP. That's why I'm way more hyped for PS5 right now and why I'm sure others feel the same. But the internet gaming community doesn't tell the whole story. I'll be interested to see what kind of effect Game Pass has on purchasing decisions among the 'casual' audience, particularly in North America. It could be significant, it could be nothing.
In the end, of course, whichever giant corporation 'wins' doesn't really matter. Objectively speaking, Vita was a disaster, it's also still one of my favorite systems of all time and I don't regret purchasing it near launch.
I think MS is smart. Treat it like the One X and people will still buy it. Also, there is way less pressure to deliver everything this year given supply chain issues and game delays we don’t even know about. People can play their games on Windows, on existing systems, and even via streaming.
I feel like Xbox have been setting themselves up well the past couple of years but now that we get towards the finish line (or start of another race) they seem to be slipping a bit.
There's still a decent amount going for it with 3rd party games and Game Pass being a great deal, but if I were to only pick one console it'd be silly not to stick with PlayStation.
I think you could probably even argue that PS Now is a better deal than Game Pass as well if you're desperate for a subscription service.
@GADG3Tx87 Exactly. Once Xbox has enough subscribers they are going to gradually start increasing the price of Game Pass just like Netflix and other online services have done.
I mean, Sony has set itself up nicely with how successful they were with the PS4. I truly believe that the 4 is arguably one of the greatest consoles to have ever hit the market. Its incredible 1st party library is unmatched and I don't think anyone else has ever come close to it. Big kudos on this gen, so they just need to ride that momentum.
PS5 100%. Too many articles about how XBox is more powerful than PS5. For me are very similar and the real results are going to be seen in games when released. For me PS was, is and will be number 1 because games, services and all that offers. Nothing will change my mind to choose MS. :-;
The thing about GamePass is it's great mainly for people who really like xbox games (console exclusives). That is if you dont mind the all digital future.
At the end of the day though, it's just one more subscription to your monthly Bill's that will not be enough to cover your gaming need. When you really want the newest popular game you will have to buy it in addition because its not in gamepass and end up spending more money and time in your favourite franchise instead and probably not enough time or interest to play the game pass offer.
MS is selling a subscription. Sony on the other hand is selling a console. I go for the latter.
@Dezzy70 The survey was actually taken before Halo was shown... those numbers are probably worse now
@MarcG420 I wasn't bashing Sony, I would always pick the Nintendo-Sony combo. I just went off on one with my thoughts really. I think Sony are the one of the big three that are really in danger of struggling if they have a bad generation. The game pass route might end up being more enticing for the general gamers than we realise. With all these games to choose from at such a cheap price on ps4, I wonder if there might be some kind of crash or more likely shift in the industry and I don't think Sony is as ready for that as MS or Nintendo.
I predict an odd generation that will lead to less people spending as much on gaming in general and paving the way for the all digital future which game pass is perfectly primed for. This is where things will get murky as hunting for bargains in shops and online is a big part of the hobby for me, like collecting records.
Let's face it, the digital system of pricing games individually is rotten and a huge rip off. The nexflix style system is much more user friendly and again, I don't think Sony is ready for that.
I was never going to go with Microsoft. I have always been a Nintendo/PlayStation fan and the exclusives to those consoles are what makes me support them each generation.
@Paranoimia couldn't have said it better
microsoft isn't going to sell huge amounts of xbox but they want to make huge amounts of money...subscriptions, cheaper hardware to manufacture and a neverstoping push to windows10. there are multiple ways for them to profit..sony on the other hand is lasered focus on its console..(which is good for us gamers)..they could brand their TVs ps5 ready and yet they don't bother...
@grahamd There haven't been "recent rumblings of max 15 hour games". That was a quote from the guy that was the CEO until he stepped down last year. He made that statement recently saying what he hoped to see more games like that in the future, but he doesn't even work for Sony anymore so have no fear. Big games, small games, and everything in between are here to stay.
@Old-Red I don’t think so honestly. People like owning their games, and gamepass is the opposite of that.
Let’s not forget that Sony also has psnow that they could lean into if it does go that way by some chance.
Game pass hasn’t made a difference for Microsoft yet and I doubt it will in the short or long term.
@zebric21 I guess you didn’t see the announcement for the two ps5 ready TVs they announced...
I’m going to be getting one personally lol
@MarcG420 that is great, i'm going sony for a next gen tv..i'm still stuck to 1080 pc monitor..
100% PS5 no doubt, currently Ps4 Pro, better games and a whole lot simpler Ui. My 2 Sons are currently xbox and want to change to PS they have only stuck with Xbox due to friends been on xbox.
I think people are getting a bit ahead of themselves. It wasn't until a few months after release of the current gen consoles, that we started to see ps4 games achieving 1080p that were only just making 900p on the xbox one. The early exclusives were rubbish for both systems until the developers could see which console would run their games the best. Anybody remember Resistance: Fall of Man? Me neither...
To be honest, I think we will start seeing multi platform games run at 4k30fps on the ps5, whilst the XboxX will be getting 4k60fps those same games. And I think multi platform games make up a good 90%+ of our game titles these days. I am getting both anyway, but I really don't think it is a clear case of 'Sony Wins' based on a few early release exclusives.
@zebric21 I’ll probably get the base model since the wife won’t want to spend the amount for the other model 😂.
https://www.sony.ca/en/electronics/televisions/xbr-x900h-series#editorial_image_1225451693451720835292797
I not into these subs. I mean they stack to my council tax, utility bills, grocery bills, other hobbies, etc. So far I've stopped paying monthly netflix, Spotify, amazon, Disney etc. And choose to focus on one at a time. One month its ps4, one sub. Then it'll be pc... No sub. Then maybe back to binge watching netflix another month. This way I'm saving around £30-£40 a month and guess what.... That pays for 2-3 sale price games which I OWN! I think Sony has always offered us gamers options which I prefer instead of forcing us down a specific route which Microsoft tries to introduce. No surprise the survey is in favour of PS5 atm.
@bbq_boy I’m sure many people feel the same way. Especially with the way the financial stability is currently. I doubt many people want to add another monthly bill to their debt load.
With Mark Cerny at the helm. A true industry giant and game changer who has already accomplished more than most people in the industry. The Ps5 however is looking to be his crowning achievement. Unlike Microsoft who just thought in an evolutionary, bigger and better kind of way. Sony and Cerny wanted to create something truly revolutionary. A system created from the ground up to take gaming to a highest level of immersion and fun. To that end Sony endeavored to change the way games are created by exponentially increasing SSD/Io throughput speeds to industry leading levels. In addition they are also trying to achieve industry leading 3d sound with the tempest engine. Promising several hundred different noticable sound points uniquely tailored to each person. Next we have the revolutionary dualsense controllers. With adaptive triggers and and next generation haptic feedback we will feel connected to the game world like never before. The dualsense looks to lead the industry again with it's create button and microphone. The Ps5 has also been built with extra silicon to eliminate bottkenecks. It has also been rumored that the geometry engine in Ps5 is taken from RDNA 3. And finally the icing on the cake is it looks like Sony has tried to create something similar to DLSS. Which uses machine learning to super sample graphics. This has been hinted at being baked into the Ps5. Meaning a game can look identical to 4k and even better but the costs on the GPU are only modest. All of which is to say we are very lucky to have a game company that takes console gaming so seriously. Combined with it's roster of top notch game developers, the playstation is looking like one of the best, if not the best place in the world to play.
While PS and fanboys care about this triviality, I'm looking forward to both of them. Have fun comparing e-penises.
@MarcG420 I think this gen will be a lot closer due to things like Game Pass. It also amuses me how people's priorities change from generation to generation. When PS4 was announced every PS fan was gloating about the console being more powerful than Xbox One. Now the fact that Xbox have the more powerful console it seems that power doesn't matter for PS diehards.
@__jamiie it wasn’t just the power, ever.
When they came out (PS4 & Xbox one) ps4 was both more powerful and cheaper.
The biggest plus for a lot would've always been the games if we’re being honest though.
It's a tiny sample size so impossible to really tell from this whether the pattern will be repeated on a larger scale.
Sony clearly has the advantage in terms of brand loyalty, and its lineup so far is looking much stronger - for my tastes at least. So whatever happens, I'm positive that I'll be picking up a PS5 eventually. As some others have said, it could be argued that the biggest obstacle is getting people to leave their PS4s behind. Hardcore gamers will quickly pick up the new console but that's only part of the story. Not everyone gets the latest console, just like not everyone gets the latest high end smartphones.
Microsoft currently have the stronger subscription service and it remains to be seen how Sony respond as a competitor and how the momentum of Game Pass continues following the XSX launch. ProjectXCloud integration could also be a game changer if they get that right.
If I'm putting my tin foil hat on and really speculating, my feeling is that hardware-wise PlayStation will comfortably "win" once again but that Microsoft's subscription services will also grow exponentially. The question is whether that drives hardware sales or whether it starts moving Xbox from a platform brand to a service brand.
After watching the July 23rd show, PlayStation is leagues better. Looking back on their respective history. Microsoft's best console was the 360. And by the end of the console generation it still couldn't beat the controversial PS3, that had a ridiculously slow start.
I will give my opinion as well
Microsoft make a huge mistake with the Xbox One.
But for the record the Xbox One X is FAR superior in terms of hardware quality than the PS4 Pro. I mean it does not heat like crazy and it is quiet and more reliable than the PS4 Pro will ever be.
If Sony make the same quality of their hardware they will be the only ones on the market for home consoles (not hybrids or handhelds!).
I love my Xbox One X but if they shutdown the servers in the future and I have to factory reset it, which happened, I will end up with a brick instead of a console!
Either way the PS4 stole my heart with their exclusives this generation!
How is this possible??? The new Halo looked AMAZING!!! I have never seen a game like that since the Xbox 360 days...
@fishnuggget Sony’s shown a lot of actual gameplay running off an actual PS5.
You’re confusing it with Microsoft which hasn’t shown any gameplay running on their Series X. 🤦♂️
@fishnuggget
Never mind the arguing, we shall see come November and into next year what next generation console will shine graphically.
And it will be the PS5. They have the best developers look at HZD, GOW the list goes on, they are not true 4K but they laugh at the Xbox one x in graphical detail and open world effects etc.
Secondly Microsoft studios have to develop for the original Xbox one console. There is no way and I don’t mean PC scaling they will take advantage of the series x power. As the PS5 game’s will start to make use of its power as they are for PS5 only.
Microsoft will be as this generation on catch up. A recent UK survey, a so called Xbox strong territory, voted 84% in favour of getting a PS5. Microsoft lost it this generation and their business strategy and mixed and muddled communication and rubbish show case, easily shows they will lose again by even more next generation.
You also forget the Xbox division inside the parent company Microsoft is probably just used as some toy tax break. They don’t even need the Xbox, it a fun playing ground, the toy shop compared to the rest of their multi billion dollar business.
@fishnuggget https://youtu.be/RuLci-lSeCo
This guy won’t last long. I give it 24 hours before he’s banned.
@fishnuggget
Thank you for the advise, but I will stick with PlayStation their first party games have been outstanding this generation and will continue to do so next generation.
I being honest here, I have been with Xbox since day one, Xbox, Xbox 360 the best times and Xbox one x. But no more, I don’t like their direction, I don’t care about backwards compatibility, I don’t care about cross generations. Microsoft are spreading their studios resources to thin having to cover to much and Halo so shows that. I want next generation games just for that console and AAA studios that produce top end games and PS5 will will give me that.
Focus on one game one generation and one console and you get top AAA results.
I actually hate Microsoft for what they have done to Xbox as I remember the glory Xbox 360 days.
@fishnuggget
You too, its funny how all three companies have gone in different directions sort of.
So choice and competition is good for us gamers. And yes you buy what you prefer and like.
@fishnuggget 🤣🤣 I’m not holding your hand to watch the video. I’ve linked gameplay. Watch it or not I care not. What you said is proven false in that video. That is all.
@Exlee300p Neither the PS5 or Xbox SX are revolutionary at all. We've had to deal with small increments since the PS3/360 generation. Nothing since has surpassed the leap to HD graphics, consistent online play and digital storefronts to highlight Indies. Faster load times and native 4k are not huge leaps. No gamer had faster load times at the top of their list of improvements unless they owned a Neo Geo CD. Until Sony started harping on about SSD speeds NOBODY CARED. But now we're expected to act in awe because assets will stream faster. Ugh.
@__jamiie the people making the games cared.
@fishnuggget oh look, the child fanboy is still at it. Pathetic.
@fishnuggget
Just to join in, I think ratchet and clank showed gameplay on the PS5 it was sort of an extended bit afterwards. And it was being played. You can find it on YouTube.
@MarcG420 The PS4 launch line up was poor beyond belief. Killzone was the only game to show off the console graphically and gameplay wise. The rest were ports or watered down sequels. And Knack. Dead Rising 3, Ryse and Killer Instinct were better launch titles.
@__jamiie why are you saying this to me exactly?
@__jamiie
I agree as I had Xbox one on launch day.
But after that Sony stepped up, Microsoft went to sleep and the PS4 exclusives rolled in and I purchased a PS4 as well.
@Dezzy70 Ive looked at that but its not real gameplay, its more of a quick time event
@fishnuggget just to prove your fanboy rantings wrong look at 8:56+ for gameplay of gran turismo 7 captured from a ps5. Also, ratchet and clank 11:45+ briefly. There is much more too if you weren’t too much of a fanboy to attempt to see for yourself 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤣🤣
@fishnuggget
No, there is actually gameplay with them running around on the ground shooting bad guys and pulling across the level using the SSD tech I guess. It’s not the video of them flying around on things between levels.
@Dezzy70 I completely agree that the line up has massively overtaken Xbox over the generation. I still think think things will be closer this gen.
@MarcG420 The people buying them didn't.
@Dezzy70
I’m telling the truth I have all the consoles so no fan boy. There’s pure ratchet and clank gameplay on YouTube.
@__jamiie I’m willing to bet there are many who wanted the QOL improvements. Myself being one of them.
What source you have showing the majority don’t?
@__jamiie
I just don’t like Microsoft’s start to this next generation. I don’t care for backwards compatibility or cross generations. It stretches the poor studios to thin and halo infinite shows that. Just make a AAA open world game massive story Halo for the series x only no multiplayer or forge and 343 would have massive hit on their hands and series x would fly off the shelves showing all its power and glory.
@MarcG420 Because you commented about the opinions of the consoles at launch and used the quality of games as a deciding factor.
Sony will lead the way again with AAA exclusives you can see that’s their intention and what their studios focus on only.
Series x will do ok and if a cheaper series s is released and the value of game pass with it the series s may become the poor persons choice and do well.
@Dezzy70 Fair enough if Xbox isn't doing it for you. I think it will be a really interesting generation though. As long as all hardware manufacturers keep pushing eachother to be better at what they individually do, then all gamers win.
@__jamiie the quality of games Sony has to offer, not just at launch. It’s an undeniable fact at this point; Sony’s got the better games (granted it’s mostly subjective, but critically it’s a fact).
@__jamiie
Absolutely competition is good in most business, look at the tv industry and the gaming industry.
@MarcG420 Neither of us have stats. But being interested in the games industry as I am you get to understand things and trends through reading various sources. I just don't genuinely believe that either manufacturer has provided anything revolutionary with these upcoming consoles. And I don't believe that anyone had faster load times at the top of their wishlist for this generation. Obviously that's my opinion but, like a lot of other gamers I know, it wasn't something we were crying out for.
@MarcG420 I completely agree that PlayStation have outdone Xbox massively over the course of the generation when it comes to first party content. I own all 3 current gen consoles and love them all for different reasons and can't see any reason to upgrade to PS5 or Xbox SX anytime soon.
@__jamiie what Sony has done with the I/O is being called revolutionary by devs though.
One example, there are more: https://www.gamesradar.com/ps5-one-of-the-most-revolutionary-inspired-home-consoles-ever-designed-says-the-order-1886-developer/
@MarcG420 What devs want and what gamers want aren't the same thing. Do you think that devs are talking about anything other than making their jobs easier and improving development times/costs? Gamers buy games not devs.
What is it that Sony and Microsoft have shown far is revolutionary for gamers?
I think it’s all about trust and history.
If you have played HZD on the PS4 and loved it, then watched the PS5 HZD 2 reveal trailer not true gameplay. You know from Sony and that studio you are going to get near to those graphics and an amazing open world adventure that looks and plays stunningly and will be first phase next generation.
It’s a no brainier as you have history of the game and studio and trust due to the PS4 AAA exclusives. Microsoft have not really come close to that this generation and when they show for whatever reason an underwhelming Halo gameplay trailer people have no trust in them because of the Xbox one history and that trailer put together. Also their suits and PR talk to much up and miss communicate the message. It’s all about history and trust and the PS4 exclusives have shined this generation.
@MarcG420IsStupid
No it’s not, look at there PS4 AAA exclusives I’m sitting here playing last of us 2 and ghost of t. I have all three consoles. The Xbox one x and switch are turned off. It’s as simple as that.
@Dezzy70 well that’s uncalled for. Why this response anyways??
Edit: nevermind it’s a reply to that fanboy who created an account to insult me 🤣🤣
@__jamiie for the ps5 it’s the entire I/O. Don’t take my word for it; I’ve linked proof to you earlier. It’s all about Sony removing the bottlenecks that were limiting game design essentially.
@MarcG420
I had to put him straight. 🤣
@Dezzy70 👍
@MarcG420
Sony - "What would really 'wow' you and blow you away from our next console?
No-one ever - "Remove the bottlenecks!!!"
I'm delighted for you that you're so easily impressed by what's on offer from PS5/Xbox but most gamers don't care about the crap your amazed by.
Are you saying that games up until the PS5 are essentially unplayable and not worth playing because of slower loading times?
Nothing shown so far is revolutionary. Ratchet and Clank could be done on PS4 with slightly longer transitions. Spider-Man Miles Morales is DLC. Bugsnax looked AWFUL. What have you been impressed by as a gamer???
@__jamiie buddy, why the aggression? We should all be happy that developers are getting the bottlenecks removed. This means they can do things that they just couldn’t before. Artists free to make what they envision is a good thing for all.
When the people who make the games are happy that can only mean good things for the gamers who play their games. And the developers are happy indeed with Sony both this current gen and in the lead-up to next gen.
@MarcG420 No aggression at all from me mate. We just clearly disagree on certain points.
Plenty of developers are massively impressed with Xbox as well but haven't seen any evidence of it.
This seems like it will be a very expensive generation for not much of a leap.
Which games have blown you away so far?
@__jamiie I’ve not been blown away. I was impressed with the speed of the transitions in ratchet and clank and I’m definitely looking forward to Demons Souls and Horizon 2 of the top of my head.
Edit: and the Series x does have some good specs too for sure.
@__jamiie Ok bud. I guess you're the grand arbitor of reality now. The only problem is is not just Sony but many many developers have said not only the SSD/Io throughput but the Ps5 in general is revolutionary. Way to ignore everything else I said. Made from the bottom up to eliminate bottlenecks. Has super advanced geometry engine taken from RDNA 3. The controller with all it's features most notably the create button. Then we have the tempest engine which looks to create the best 3D sound on the market. Which can be heard on regular speakers and not just headphones. And as I mentioned it looks like Sony had created their own version of DLSS which will be baked into the Ps5. Which allows it to show high resolutions at low cost to the hardware. And finally it is easy to optimize for developers. But as someone who is not a developer you really don't know what your talking about. I'm sorry you seem salty about how amazing Sony made the Ps5. You must be an Xbot. I'm sorry you're so miserable bud.
@Exlee300p Haha! Well done on getting angry and being a total fanboy. I do appreciate the title of Grand Arbiter (spelled correctly) though. I have stated on several posts, that I'm not impressed with either Xbox or PlayStation. I own both by the way so stop being childish and calling me an Xbox. Grow up mate.
Yes I'm not a developer. Well done if you are though.
However as a gamer and a potential consumer I'm entitled to disagree with your opinion. You accusing me of being miserable because I don't think that anything shown so far from both companies has been impressive shows again that you're quite a childish fanboy who can't stand a real debate without crying and trying to get personal.
When load times, sounds and a create button are the most exciting things you can talk about, something is clearly wrong.
No actual gameplay for either console so far has been impressive, revolutionary or amazing. Or did I miss some games only you have access to?
@MarcG420 This has been my point all along. I'm not saying anything next gen is terrible. It's clearly an improvement. It just falls well below what I was expecting. I don't know if it's me being a greedy gamer but the last time I was truly amazed by a game was wearing my PSVR for the first time. That blew me away because the experience was incredible. The London Heist and the shark demo gave me and my friends hours of fun we'd never experienced before. Even considering the relatively lower vr tech. I'm not expecting every generation to change my world, but I'm old enough to remember the jump from 8bit to 16bit. The jump from 16bit to 32bit and the PSOne was incredible. I probably sound like a grouchy old idiot but I just really, really want to be impressed and neither Sony or Microsoft have done that so far. If someone told me tomorrow that the Unreal 5 demo was a game in waiting I'd pre-order it in a heartbeat. That blew me away. When they actually let it play though. Not all the chatter about how many triangles they made.
@__jamiie yeah, psvr was a wow moment for sure for me too. I’m really looking forward to the experiences that will be possible in vr on the ps5 too though and that a major win for Sony in my opinion. VR is amazing.
@MarcG420 If PSVR 2 is natively compatible with the games I already have I'll be there. I just wish they had updated the Move Controllers for PS4. I'm expecting much better from PSVR 2 controllers (crosses fingers). VR is incredible. I've said it before on here but I consider it my 4th console aside from Xbox, PS4 and Switch. It just offers something amazing you can't get anywhere else in the console space. I'm also so pleased at Sony's support for VR. The way they dropped Vita hurt me.
@__jamiie Talk about projection! Pushsquare asked each of us what we thought. I shared it. And yes I am excited and impressed with how much work Mark Cerny and Sony put in to making the Ps5 a next gen, next level experience. And it is not just me. But a large amount of developers have praised the features of the Ps5 as well. Yes you are entitled to your opinion and I welcome it. But you decided to interact with me. I would venture part of your modus operendi is being a contrarian. You enjoy it. You are what I call a sanctimonious anti-fan who thinks they are above everyone else but whose motivations for doing so reveal the caricature that you are. Good day sir.
@Exlee300p Please stop trying to seem intellectual. You can't spell. Use all the words in the world but please spell them correctly.
My point of this whole 'disagreement' has been that the tech specs that devs care about aren't what gamers care about. Devs make games. Gamers buy games.
What games did Mark Carney talk about? None. He hosted an incredibly disappointing deep dive into architecture and SSD speed.
He bored the planet and most of the gaming community that loves PlayStation community (including myself) almost cried themselves to sleep.
My opinion is that so far, neither Xbox SX or PS5 has been impressive. Neither has blown me away. Neither have convinced me to shell out more money given that I have an Xbox One X and a PS4 Pro+VR and Switch.
Tell me which games you've seen so far have blown you away and couldn't be done on current gen with slightly slower load times?
@__jamiie. First of all bud lose the arrogance. Secondly I'm not trying to sound intellectual. That's how I talk. I don't use spellchecker and if I occasionally misspell a word in the comments section so be it.
Fortunately after your initial jab you chose to be more cordial. If you hadn't been that adversarial from the outset we could have had a civil discussion earlier. Better late than never I suppose.
You mentioned in some other comment that you are old enough to remember the jump from 8-bit to 16-bit. I am too. Which is why the 16 bit era is probably my favorite. Just as much as the ps4, I play on my rgb modded pc engine duo-r. Anyhow it may not be as readily apparent, but I believe the jump from Ps4 to Ps5 will be as big. Especially when all things are taken into account. You mentioned what developers want is different than what gamers want. I kindly disagree. I think they both align. When developers get the tools they want to enable them to more easily create their vision, this more than likely leads to satisfied gamers. And it's not just about loading times per se. With ssd being so fast developers can change the way they design games. This obviously is not going to be as evident in the first generation of next gen games. But it will be soon enough. Then with all the immersion enhancing features on the dualsense and the 3D sound from the tempest engine the feeling of presence will jump exponentially. Anyway you asked what game could not be replicated on current gen. Ratchet and Clank Rift Apart. The jump between dimensions simply could not be done. But I am also not as dismissive of the increased graphics as you either. The increase in density on screen with next gen has been very noticable. But again some of the best features can't be felt from videos like the 3d sound and dualsense. To me that's enough. If it's not for you that's cool. Wait until something strikes your fancy then. Ok? Cheers mate.
I'm absolutely platform agnostic but you seem to be a fanboy so I'll continue.
I own all current platforms. I will buy an Xbox SX and a PS5 and whatever Nintendo comes out with next. Why?
Because I'm a gamer.
I don't care what platform performs well. If there are good games on it I will buy them. Great games are great games. I own a multitude of consoles and I'm happy to say that each one has at least one gem worth your time.
You seem like someone who has only had PlayStation in their life. That's fine. You've enjoyed one of the greatest series of consoles ever made. If you haven't played PSVR please do.
Me? I enjoy the whole spectrum of gaming. I play my Dreamcast weekly and my Super NT and Mega SG are hooked up all the time.
You aren't a gamer. You're a fanboy that can't spell and tries to use long words to mask intolerance for any other opinion.
Also, I guarantee you spell checked yourself and my comments.
All depends on price and value for money. The rumored Xbox Lockhart is going to undercut the PS5 whatever the cost and with GamePass being as appealing as it is that might be the route I take. I have a family to support now.
@__jamiie
Well I liked the look of ratchet and clank and I do like those games in general.
The big one for me was HZD 2, ok not real gameplay. But this generation has shown me that HZD for me was amazing and that studio I trust to deliver. The reason they will deliver is because they are just focusing on the PS5 only and a massive open world storytelling only.
It does not have to work on last generation and PC and must have multiplayer and co op and the forge and war zone. Like I said Microsoft are stretching their studios to thinly and they are ending up jack of all trades and master of none. Which suits some gamers that’s ok.
But I want the very best single player experience and that’s just my preference.
My guess is that it will play out more or less the same as this generation - PS4 owners will get a PS5 and XBO will get a XSX without a whole lot of moving back or forth.
What is clear is MS are adopting a new strategy to previous gens. I imagine they've looked at the likes of Apple and gone.. how can we sell hardware every couple of years like they do and get brand loyalty. The only way forward to make this happen is to start selling the idea that your games will work across many generations of console (if that's your preference), or PC (windows licence) or phones (XBLive subs). I think they are going after the software market not the hardware one
Breaking News: In poll conducted on mostly PS users, people seem to like PlayStation!!
Really? Lol. It's almost comical if it wasn't just so annoying. Just more confirmation bias from a PlayStation website, for PlayStation readers to feel awesome about their PlayStation.
Don't get me wrong. Looks like a good system. Hell they're both the same thing. In hardware terms. The both have fancy new audio hardware/software, they're both (finally) taking the plunge into SS storage in facinating ways. Despite my personal dislike for the design of the PS5 I'm sure the major difference, as it was last gen. Will be exclusives. Xbox knows they lost that war last gen, hard, and has bought up a bunch of studios to take some back. It's rather promising. I'm not concerned about the "graphical fidelity" of seeing a game over a stream, like the people bitching about Halo. This is going to be the first generation where console players can even make those wider claims of graphic anyway. As long as both companies don't price then out of the water, I'll do the same thing I did last time. I'll buy both, and mainly play on my PC, another big win for Microsoft as they are now supporting both simultaneously. Though, I suspect Sony is going to get the hint as pre-orders for Horizon: Zero Dawn are flying of the digital shelf and is going to sell like gangbusters. More power to them, exclusives are absolutely idiocy to begin with. The devs made the games, they deserve to sell to as many people as they can.
@__jamiie I'm glad you're platform agnostic. But it doesn't make you better than me. Furthermore your arrogance is truly staggering. Guess what bud? Ego is the opposite of enlightenment. Your ego is so big it has it's own zipcode. All i'll say is I play and have played many systems. From Snes to Tg-16 to dreamcast to vita and Psvr. I don't have intolerance for other opinions, you clearly do. You don't think Ps5 is impressive fine. Despite what your towering ego keeps telling you, you are no better than anyone else. So do the world a favor and get over yourself.
@Exlee300p Ignorance is the opposite of enlightenment. Idiot.
You still haven't answered my question. Which games have blown you away?
@__jamiie I was blown away by the first two games by Fumito Ueda Ico and Shadow of the Colossus. Both of those games were the epitome of what makes video games such an amazing art form. The singular style, starkness, and visions of those two games really stick out in my mind. Another one of course has to be the Witcher 3. The overall quality and breadth of that game truly blew me away. The game never ceased to amaze me. Believe it or not Astro Bot Rescue Mission. Like you I truly love my PSVR. I was shocked how good it was. I think I had a smile on my face from start to finish. The game in my opinion was as good as any Mario game. The first time I played Resident Evil 4 I was blown away with how well they updated the formula and how the quality continued throughout the 20 hour campaign. I was also a big fan of Until Dawn. I thought it was a great horror game and the myriad ways your choices affected the outcome was well implemented. Finally I really enjoyed Persona 5. I am a big fan of Jrpg's and Persona 5 was amazing. The gameplay and style was top notch. Off the top of my head those are some of my top games.
@Exlee300p Some truly amazing choices there.
