@AccessibleDaydream because the main popularity isn't in the gambling, it's in the characters, which you just happen to have to gamble for if you want to PLAY with them. at least, it is for me and ppl i know, as well as the story (which said characters do usually exist inside of) and just the gameplay itself being enjoyable.

i've never once in my about 6 years of gacha gaming spent a dollar with intent to gamble, it's only ever on guaranteed purchases like costumes and such. i have plenty of high tier things in my accounts and i could have more if i played more often. if these games dont take your money they're 100% taking your time with how grindy they can be building characters or doing quests for premium currency, including daily quests and such. average of a free game but necessary if you're looking to get 5 stars.

also, i think most ppl flock to spend on them because there is SLIGHTLY less risk than gambling at a real casino. many gacha games have a gradually increasing "pity" system that increases the more times you pull. pity increases your luck of getting a character of the highest tier until you get them, thus resetting it until you pull again. there's alot more i could explain like soft/hard pity but i've already typed way too much defending these games. some gachas don't even have this and have incredibly awful rates to compliment. hoyoverse just seems to be the better of them i think.
