I'm not at all surprised by this. It's very similar to a common tactic used in mobile games where they make the first few hours or levels easy to progress through to draw users in, then suddenly you hit a brick wall that's virtually impossible to get passed without massive grinding or micro transactions. But it's exceedingly shameful on this title considering the premium price tag just to get the game. It's nothing more than pure greed. On the other hand, we consumers have only ourselves to blame by paying for these microtransactions in the past and therefore setting the precedent within the video game industry. I'd say North America should boycott the game, but I know (and don't take this the wrong way folks) that the vast majority of gamers out there don't have the discipline to hold back and will just shovel out the money, making any sort of boycott ineffective.
